I dunno, I think Heart and Rush certainly are worthy candidates. And since we're letting in hip hop now, Public Enemy is a must for the genre.

If Rush gets in, I imagine it's only a matter of time until Yes gets in as well.

Since Rush is at least nominated, I'm directing my ire toward the complete and utter lack of They Might be Giants. My new chant will be 'Let They In!!'

I love they might be giants, but im not sure they had the success or influence you need to even be considered.

Fine, then I'm starting a movement to get Winger in.

Speaking of influence, what exactly did Bon Jovi influence? More hair bands??

If having a lot of hit songs/success is the barometer, I shudder to think who will be nominated in the future.

Bon Jovi?  Seriously?

My problems with women began with my babysitter, who was obsessed with Bon Jovi.  I was 5 but I knew the guy was a douche.

God, I hope they don't get in. But, they've sold a lot of records because their sound made radio climax. Bon Jovi didn't even influence the other major hair bands, only D-grade ones like Lion and Tigertailz. Bon Jovi's influence on bands such as Sugar Ray and Chumbawumba is what got them nominated I imagine. City Center Mall stuff.

There was an interesting article recently about Pearl Jam and their "legacy."  Author holds them responsible for influencing Creed and Nickleback.  That could be enough to blacklist them!

The problem with Pearl Jam wasn't the band, it was all Eddie Vedder.  He took himself completely seriously.  Put Rockso up there.

I loved all the Seattle grunge bands as much as anyone, but man did the 2nd/3rd wave of "grunge", grunge-lite and grunge-influenced nu-metal get f'in horrible.  Late 90's- worst era in rock music, ever.

I wouldn't put Creed on Pearl Jam alone.  Bands like Candlebox and Collective Soul had a lot more to do with it, in the way they moved grunge toward pop.

Amen, brother. Testify!

Oh, you know Nickelback's going in immediately in 2021. They've sold a ton of records and the band will dramatically raise the profile of the Rock Hall among those all-important upper-middle-class divorced overweight female head-of-households.

Well, technically it's not the Rock & Roll Hall of Good.

Hahaha!

Sorry, but I'm going to have to steal that one.

Is Public Enemy a "rock" group, I say yes.  The band's message is clearly inline with rock/folk protest music.  Also, the tracking on their good albums was the product of a real musician, not some circa 2012 college kid with a laptop computer.

The Hammond organ + roller coaster shrieks, how did they ever think of that?  That's a pretty much unmodified Hammond sound, too.  So cool how that sound straight out of the organ is rich in one context and terrifying in another.  Also, they borrow the double-track rotary speaker trick from Shine on You Crazy Diamond.

Inductees are announced

http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20121211/FREE/121219942

Rush, Heart, Albert King among 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees

Heart, Albert King, Randy Newman, Public Enemy, Rush, Donna Summer, Quincy Jones and Lou Adler have been selected for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Randy Newman wrote one "novelty" hit song and wrote soundtracks for movies.  If his soundtracks were great, he might deserve an Emmy, but I don't see what business he has being in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  The voters must be his buddies--it must be the babes and cocaine they shared.

Well everyone knows the process is terrible. So many great bands not in.

^There might be a strategy to that.  You can't just pluck of all of the GOAT's and induct them at once.  There are a few icons from various genres let in each cycle and it keeps the interest and enthusiasm for the ceremony up.

About as week an induction class as I can imagine.

randy newman+heart=fail

rush is a fail too imo, but that is just a matter of my taste, objectively they definately have earned it otherwise. plus, we should be nice to the canadians and throw them a bone for watching over our natural resources.

I'm not a fan but respect them.  They deserve this nod.  They are one of a handful of legacy acts that sell tickets and records to newer generation fans.

I can finally visit Cleveland again! :-P  Maybe I'll even visit that "piss stain" of a museum. Too bad this year's ceremony is in L.A. Stupid...

Rush should have been inducted in 1998. Period. Thanks to recent inductees like Metallica for calling the RRHOF out in their acceptance speech as well as heaps of praise from fellow rockers in Beyond The Lighted Stage.

But in the end, it took a fan vote publicity stunt. Something the RRHOF President said this March would never happen: "...the hall would never go to a popular vote, noting that all established halls of fame have an industry voting board that chooses its inductees. “We’re not going to turn this into ‘American Idol’".

Dude, Rush is the greatest band of all-time!

They like bands that wound up on movie soundtracks a lot in order to draw the attention of movie and TV people that don't pay that much mind to the music world.

^Is it a gimmick to get attention to the Rock and Roll HOF?

^ Guys just do a simple wiki search and you will realize he has made a significant contribution in music both as a writer and composer through television, stage and screen going back 50 years. Not just one novelty song.

How week is that?  HA!

^ At least you caught it, two weaks later.

Nominations for induction released today - KISS, Hall & Oates, Linda Rondstat, Nirvana, Yes, LL Cool J, NWA, Cat Stevens are all on the list, among others.  Should be a great class.  I'm not personally a KISS fan, but their induction will be a big draw to the museam.  I love me some Hall & Oates.  Rondstat was one of the greatest vocalists of her time, if not THE greatest IMO.  Nirvana is a shoe-in.  Whether you like their music or not, they changed the game and really kick started the whole Seattle grunge style.  LL Cool J has to get in too.

I have mixed feelings about LL Cool J & NWA. I understand that they're influenced by rock, blurred the lines between rock and rap, and hugely important to music, but I still view them primarily as rap artists.

I'm not a KISS fan, but they belong there as much as anyone.

Nirvana was hugely influential and needs to be there too.

The RRHOF is a sham until such time as the Alan Parsons Project is inducted! (Sorry, after Rush, I'm thin on outrage).

Journey?

^^^"Rock 'n Roll" for the RRHOF is a bit of a misnomer.  It covers all forms of pop music basically from the mid-1950's to the present.  Bob Marley is an inductee, as is Parliament-Funkadelic, and countless other artists/groups you would not find filed under "Rock 'n Roll" at your local CD/record store....... if you can still find your local CD/record store

Funkadelic is unquestionably a rock group.  Also, nirvana is one of the most overrated bands of all time.

I renamed a shared work computer, "Maggot Brain" and, poof, nobody wanted to use it again.

Kinda glad Link Wray is nominated. Still no Devo. Being in Cleveland, I'd think they could acknowledge Peter Laughner...

Linda Rondstat also helped launch the Eagles as Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Randy Meisner and Bernie Leadon was her backing band early on in her career.

^I never knew that until a few months ago when I was watching an excellent Showtime (?) documentary on the Eagles.  There was some great video of her performing live.  Awesome vocals.  Extremely influential.

bump back to life --- who's going to the induction ceremony?

^ I wish.  Probably looking at definitely one of those weekends where Cleveland connects with the rest of the country in a big way.  I would say world, but I think a few beatles and Lebron will be the only thing that is global that weekend.  We are probably looking at the Cavs kicking off the the playoffs this weekend.  I still maintain that Clevelands biggest annual weekend of the year is in May with the Case/Cleveland State commencements and the Cleveland marathon.  An opportunity to connect with the world, as many runners and families converge from other countries upon our city.

April 17th-18th should definitely be vibrant.

A couple of cool photo essays on Cleveland.com today showing the events at the Rock Halls celebration day in preperation for the award ceremony next wkd. It's so big to have that here every 3 years. Other cities would pay big bucks to steal it away. Between this and the AP awards, that's two very high profile music events here in Cleveland. If you can try and take part in what is going on this week.

I am definitely going. The musical lineup is unbelievable.

Your prediction has come true.  Should be a great night here--weather is in our favor as well!

The Rock Halls twitter feed is a good follow today. Visitors saying some nice things. Good day in Cleveland today.

And a couple of guys hanging out at Public Hall( some 50 years after they once played there together).

I ran into Foo Fighters today south of Cleveland at a Get Go.  Could not have been nicer

A reminder of his important Alan Freed was from Ringo Starr last night at the induction ceremony.

Then Starr added, “And I’ll tell you why,” which he followed with a detailed rundown of his discovery of early rock and R&B through a Luxembourg radio station he listened to in Liverpool — a station that carried influential American radio deejay Alan Freed’s broadcasts from Cleveland.

“Every Sunday at 4 o’clock in the afternoon, we’d listen to Alan Freed. He played Little Richard, he played Jerry Lee Lewis, who was here earlier, and that’s where we heard rock and roll music,” Starr, 74, said. “Alan Freed introduced us to so many great records.”
