May 19, 200916 yr I can't believe some people WALK on the treadmill. As if walking on regular ground is so hard on your joints. The same people sometimes take it a step higher on the ridiculousness meter and walk while holding on to the railing. Like their legs need to be rehabilitated and walking on the treadmill will heal them enough to where one day they will finally be able to walk normally lol. Some people "arthritis, joint problems, etc." must do that. Also, when getting back into shape, you should walk first then graduate. My cousins, I think they are going thru pre midlife crisis', started working out on January 1, nobody was over weight, but a not taking care of themselves and eating right. I talked about my cousin, who drives two minutes from his house to his office, so bad he, a few of his friends and cousins (on both sides of my family) did a 50 million pound challenge group. My cousin who is a fitness, healthfood nutjob (he's on, put them thru boot camp drills and all sort of non sense.) put together a plan for each person. He had those fools running UP fairhill. A couple of weeks ago they ran from my cousin house in mid beachwood, to his brother house near warrensville, then to my brothers house, down the SL to the square. They asked my cousin and I to join. I opened up a bag of BBQ chips, put some hot sauce and pepper on them and rolled my eyes. My cousin has lost 42 lbs. and changed his eating habits. His over weight friend has lost 70 Lbs., honestly, I had no idea, there was a phyne man under all that fat. My cousins' wife threatened me and told me if my cousin is having a mid life crisis, buys a sports car and cheats on her, she's going to kill us both. LOL I can't help it if I'm svelte. I have been working the shoulders and the man breast. It's going to be on and poppin' for tank top season. Although, this is good, I know this is going to turn out to be bad, as now my brothers and cousins' kids are in high school and competing against each other, it's going to start a whole decade of family infighting based on school sports.
May 19, 200916 yr I'm currently biking 60+ miles and swimming 6500 (3.5 miles) yards per week. have you thought about doing a tri-athalon? If I weren't afraid of what running might do to my joints, I'd definitely consider it. Are you jogging on a track, grass or pavement/concrete?
May 19, 200916 yr You all are inspiring me. I have never exercised a day in my life (except walking and biking around town), but need to start. They have a work out room at work with showers, so I have no excuse. I don't even know how the machines work.

If you have not worked out, I suggest going to your doctor, first, then going to a gym to see what you would like to improve. Also, if you're going to improve the body, gotta start eating better.
May 19, 200916 yr No trainer. I'm working on the eating habits already. I need to lose at least 20lbs. Also starting salsa classes with wife, which does make me sweat a bit. Not used to that!

Well visit your Doctor first. Remember salsa is three beats - step, step, step, pause. rinse and repeat. It's all in the hips!
May 19, 200916 yr I started working out again after my younger bother, who is 23, said he was stronger than me because I was an old man (I'm 28). In January, I challenged him to a NFL combine bench competition (most reps at 225). I smoked his punk a$$. After we were done, I told him I had old man strength. Lol. Since then, I've been in the gym four days a week and I love it. Honestly, I feel guilty as hell when I can't make. I even get up at 5:45 somedays to workout.

May 20, 200916 yr This isn't very routine, but I'm very happy that I did a 36 mile bike ride today. I'm working on doing a bike ride from Ann Arbor to Detroit. Both cities are 36 miles apart, but as you can see, I only went halfway today. Much of my journey involved using a complex network of bike trails, then cutting through a college campus, through a couple neighborhoods, then taking Michigan Ave the rest of the way. The speed limit on Michigan Ave is 60 mph, so it's a bit dangerous, BUT the shoulder is 11 feet wide. It's actually only used as a turn lane in emergencies, meaning drivers can't use it as a deceleration lane even to turn into driveways. At intersections it's a valid turn lane, but sidewalks appears at least 200 feet prior, which I use. You can see where they block it out here: http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=Ypsilanti,+MI&ie=UTF8&split=0&gl=us&ei=rZcTSunfDtrEmQfnzdzuAw&ll=42.267675,-83.502515&spn=0.001701,0.003278&t=k&z=19&iwloc=A It should be interesting taking the second half of the route where's more urbanized and hood. I want to have ridden 100 miles in just two days.
May 20, 200916 yr ^ Sounds like a fun ride. By the time you hit Woodward Ave, you'll basically have conducted a core sample of the industrial midwest.
May 22, 200916 yr Yeah it was pretty interesting. Today I finally made the whole trip, from downtown Ann Arbor, to campus martius in downtown Detroit. I couldn't believe all the different types of cities and suburbs I hit. I really should photograph it sometime. The ride TO Detroit is not bad at all. Despite being 36 miles, the wind blows you the whole way there. I had to stop about 4 times for water, but it took me about 3.5 hours. I think any average cyclist could do this journey fairly easily. Going from Detroit to Ann Arbor may be more difficult though because of the wind direction.
May 22, 200916 yr I used to hit the gym pretty hard. Now I mainly rely upon push-ups and the wheel. When I did workout on a regular basis, I did not have a set routine but I always did muscle group focused workouts. And, I always warmed up and cooled down with some light cardio. I relied upon b-ball pick-up games and frisbee tossing for my heavier cardio. For lifting, I was usually training for sports, so I focused on strength and explosiveness, not so much body-beautin'. More weight and less reps. A typical week would look something like this: Day 1 (chest, arms and shoulders) -Pull-ups -Flat, incline and decline bench with barbell -Butterflies on the nautilaus -Military press with barbell -Lateral raises to front, side and back -Dips -Straight bar curls and nose crunches -21's with my workout partner -tricep extensions -some kind of arm or chest burnout Day 2 (back, neck and legs) -Squats -Power cleans -Dead lifts -Lateral pull-downs -Rows -Inverted dumbell raises (reverse butterflies) -Calf raises -Leg raises and curls Day 3 (chest, shoulders and arms) -Pretty much the same but with dumbells instead of the straight bar or nautilas Day 4 (Back, neck and legs) -Fairly similar but more stress on reps than weight Day 5 -Start the routine again or take a day's rest if I have not already Nowadays when I do lift, I focus much more on the cardio aspect of it. I try to shoot for sets of 15-20 in everything I do and go with lighter weights. For my age, I find that push-pull routines are necessary to keep the joint pains away. Also, I don't do anything for legs anymore beyond cardio.
May 27, 200916 yr I don't think I've done a workout like that since high school. Being on the football team, we were required to stick to a strict workout during the off season. I miss those days when membership was FREE. So I finally did it the other day. I rode from Ann Arbor to Detroit. Downtown to downtown. It definitely deserves a photo tour if I can bring a small point and shoot next time. The most difficult part is that 2/3 of the trip is entirely urbanized. The rest involves riding on bike paths and road shoulders. My arms were pulsing because at least 2 hours were spent riding on sidewalks. The route had a lot of factories along it and it appears back when there were more people employed, automakers poured incredibly wide sidewalks leading to out-lot parking. So I was at least able to travel fast through some of the western suburbs despite being off the road.
August 26, 200915 yr I've been bike commuting to work 30+ miles round trip 3-4 times a week with an occasional 15-20 mile weekend leisure ride. By my doctor's scale I've dropped 37 lbs in the last 12 months; by my home scale, 45 lbs since January. I've gone from a 36 waist to a 34 and am in danger of hitting a 32. I think I better stop. With the fall and winter coming up I'll have to. I'd like to maintain this general physique (non fat-ass) and start hanging some muscle on it. That'll be my winter project I guess.

August 26, 200915 yr Massive amounts of Dance Dance Revolution (don't knock it until you've tried it) helped me drop 25 lbs. a couple of years ago; I've let up, and some of that weight has come back, but I'm still a good distance off my high. 8-)
August 26, 200915 yr Which would cost as much as I spent on the actual pants. Besides, I have a closet full of vintage suits that fit me again, and any tailoring I'm going to invest in will be to take care of what the moths ate.
August 26, 200915 yr I have a new workout routine. 1. BFing, which they "say" burns 800 calories a day (I have yet to see evidence of that). 2. Rushing around to get ready for work before the baby has hysterics because nobody is paying attention to him, including speed-packing of lunch, speed-applying of makeup and speed-dressing. 3. Carrying like 100 pounds of loot to my car each morning - baby (about 13 pounds now), diaper bag, work tote bag, breast pump (heavy backpack) and lunch bag. 4. The usual walking during commute - into and up steps at rapid station, up steps at tower city, cross public square 5. The reverse commute walk 6. Carrying the loot back into the apartment 7. Rocking and/or carrying the 13 lb baby for approx 2 hours each night. While I'm not getting toned from this or losing any weight, I'm also not gaining any, and I am not dieting by any stretch. I wonder how many calories I'm burning with this lifestyle, for real.

I love what video games like DDR can do, however I think people are mistaking Wii fit for a panacea that ain't there. Yet.

My skank-in-law went down in weight/size after each of the first three kids
August 26, 200915 yr I lost 90% of the pregnancy weight in the hospital, but I was lucky and didn't gain that much. I lost the remaining few pounds the week after I had him. But I'm still in the "overweight" category on the BMI chart, albeit by a slim margin. There's just no time or energy for working out except on the weekends and I fear that's not enough.

August 26, 200915 yr The BMI is WORTHLESS. As for parenthood, congrats. It only gets easier. When the time comes, though, just don't fall into the trap of finishing what the kids didn't eat. Oi vey!
August 27, 200915 yr ^Thank you - my BMI is 25.1 (based on being 170 lbs. and 5'9"), which puts me ever so slightly in the "overweight" category. All the while I'm wearing my 30" jeans, small or medium shirts, and hitting the gym three times a week, with a hour each time being spent on the elliptical. August 27, 200915 yr I was pretty heavy back at the beginning of January (218lbs, 5'11"), but I was somewhat proportional. I'm at a "Normal" 24 BMI now (174lbs) and my wife says I look like an Auchwitz survivor and she's right (even though my legs are huge from all the biking). I'm not interested in losing another pound.

I'm so out of shape it's unreal. But it was coming back pretty quickly as I was in pretty good shape before. Then I went back to work and my schedule became hell again. Baby is getting up twice a night now to eat when he was very close to sleeping through the night most nights before. Still, after 2 weeks of this he is finally starting to get a routine again and only woke up once last night. Now we have to change his schedule again as we are introducing daycare 2 days/week starting next week (Grandma's the other 3 days). This morning I sent DH a formal schedule for the gym. While I may be soft, I still have about the same shape as I did before and weigh what I did before getting PG, but he is really starting to look like Homer Simpson in the stomach area, and he has GOT to do something about it. I sent him a schedule that says that starting next week, I will go to the gym these days and he will go these alternate days. No response yet. I'm sure he's mad but I don't care!

August 27, 200915 yr I just have to parse out things I put my foot down about. It's been an exhaustive 3 months with the baby and we're just starting to do normal people things again, so I think it's time. But if I'd have brought it up before he probably would have flipped out.

Then use all the tricks you women have to punish him. Call my mom, she'll give you some pointers. Doing it her way might garner you some jewelry at the end. LOL
August 27, 200915 yr Oh honey, I am not the jewelry sort. You would be appalled at my jewelry, it is ALL costume. I do not even have a traditional wedding ring as I am against diamond mining and told DH don't waste your money. I had a couple of gold necklaces and things with diamond chips in them that old BFs had given me and we hocked them awhile back for some cash.

Do you speak a second language? You could just ignore him for 2/3 weeks. That will break him down.
August 27, 200915 yr No second language. Closest would be sign language but I haven't used it for several years and was never an expert, so it's pretty basic and fairly worthless. He doesn't get motivated that way, he would just get mad and more stubborn. I have to just schedule it and make him go, without threat of punishments or promise of enticements.

August 27, 200915 yr LOL, who'd have thunk it. I *hate* being manipulated so I try not to do that to him either. I think it's mean to do things that way. I prefer to play everything straight.

That is a ton of weight to lose that fast. Do you know what your body fat % is right now? I just curious because I am 5' 11" too but the last time I saw the south side of 175 lbs I was a senior in highschool and had to starve my self to make weight at 171 for wrestling (after 2 years at 189lb). My healthy weight is around 190lb where my body fat is right around 8%-10%. I obviously have a thick muscular frame. Currently my workout routine is P90x dvds and running. I am running the river run half marathon on Sept 13th, which is the Browns opener. That should make for an interesting afternoon....
August 27, 200915 yr My body fat percentage is 14-15%, down from 26% in January. It is a lot of weight, and I can't really account for it all. I haven't been starving myself: I eat all day long like I used to, but I just eat smarter. I think my metabolism has reset upwards. My weight fluctuates (I was below 173 this morning, I'll probably be close to 180 after the weekend) but if I can stay between 175 and 180, I'll be happy. There are a ton of P90x videos on youtube. The results are indeed startling. Have you experienced anything like that?
August 27, 200915 yr It has taken me 6 weeks to get through the first 4 weeks of the program. I haven't been dieting so I haven't had the startling results with weight loss but I was pretty active before I started so i have stayed about the same weight but I have noticed a change in my physique. The series of workouts really do work your whole body. It really has shown me how lacking my old workout routine was. It has really helped my running too, because I have been doing most of the cardio workouts which involve a lot of jumping barefoot, so my feet and lower legs are way stronger than before. If I can focus on diet for a couple of weeks while continuing the program I should be able to get the startling results (or at least noticiable). I find it is always a lot easier for me to lose weight in the Sept to Nov time period because there is generally nothing going on.
September 9, 200915 yr just a bump. Ran 10 miles last night in preperation for the half marathon this weekend. I have been slacking on the p90X once this race is over I hope to get back on the wagon...
September 9, 200915 yr Just started taking up biking. It's more of a leisure/fitness thing but still, it's something. My dad and I rode 14 miles last Sunday, and I plan to that or more this coming Sunday.
October 31, 200915 yr I screwed up lol. I was 170 pounds 3 days ago then I had my birthday and ate a TON of birthday cake plus had a bunch of beers. Now I'm 173. Beer has to be the worst thing for someone trying to be healthy.. There's tons of calories but no nutrients. It's liver toxic. Plus it dehydrates your body like nothing else.
