^Either you are just not "into" your routine yet, over exerting yourself, not properly stretching both before or after the workout, or you are not giving your muscles enough time to heal from previous workouts.  Unless you are training for something specific, I would be careful in how much weight you are working with on your legs.  As you get older, your joints won't react as well to the strain and you could end up tearing something.  One common mistake people make is not ensuring that their quads and hamstring muscles are growing and gaining strength at a similar pace.  If one gets too strong for the other, 'snap' goes the knee.

Try working with lighter weights and higher reps.  You won't get the "bulk" that comes along with really heavy lifting but you will get better results in terms of cardio and toning.

JMHO.

I only want to bulk. I'm already really lean right now.

I'll worry about my joints later on in life; I'm still young.

The pain comes from tearing muscle fibers. I know a lot of people think it's bad for you but whenever I do research online about stuff like that all I see is contradictory opinions/research. I'm sticking with "no pain, no gain" though I agree it's important to work out every part of your body so that they grow in proportion and decrease chance of injury.

^You have to give your muscles time to rest, otherwise you'll feel like an old man long before you have the privilege of actually being one. The worst scenario of all is to injure yourself and be incapable of working out, period, which I know is the last thing you want to hear.

I'm speaking from experience: I totally jumped into running at the end of December. I had all kinds of endurance from swimming and biking, so I added on tons of miles real fast--I literally went from 0-4 miles in two runs, building up to 7+ miles within two weeks of starting. About two weeks ago my left leg totally shut down half way into a 7-mile run. Long story short, I'd developed IT Band Syndrome, and will be off my feet for another month rehabbing it, which is sort of throwing a wrench into my training for the Motor City Triathlon in June.

The good news is this condition is completely common and treatable. I'm also glad to have learned my lesson early on, and maybe it had to happen this way for me to grasp it.

Do whatever you want with that.

The "impact" effect is why I don't run.  I tore up my knee both my junior and senior years in college so I am more sensitive than most.  But I try to stay away from road running and treadmills.  That's why my bike has been a great cardio pick up for me... and it suprisingly gives more than I thought toward working the upper body, especially when I take it off-road.  I have a stationary at home but it is really hard to get a decent workout on that alone and elypticals are worthless IMO.

Elliptical trainers do one thing and only one thing: burn calories. But they do it well.

I think I give it enough time. 4-5 days per group. I never work a muscle out when its sore. I don't always do low reps either. I switch; doing high rep one week, low rep another and some times I'll do static contraction.  I'm interested in hearing opinions on static contraction. It sounds pretty hard on the muscles and joints but I've heard people say it made them a lot stronger. I seem to be getting results from it.

Do you take Omega3 or something like that? You're a vegan, yeah?  Maybe you weren't getting enough fat to lubricate your joints  :?

Wowwee Zowee is it hot out there. I cramped up during my "urban run" up from DT Akron to Highland Square today at lunch. I was feeling good because there was a breeze for the first mile or so, then I decided to continue on and do my 5 mile loop instead of just the 4. Dumb idea....

I'd rather watch a turkey roast than do cardio! I lost about 15 pounds last year from running and biking and never gained any fat back so I hardly ever do it anymore. I'd much rather lift weights.

A good run de-stresses me.  It pumps me up for the day.

I've been slacking these past couple months. I've been eating fast food for convenience! I've only been working out maybe 1-2x a week. I'm finally getting back into it full force.

There's something about going out and buying protein powder and Omega 3 fatty acid supplements that kind of makes it official that you're serious and back in business. I guess going to GNC or NutritionX is like a ritual akin to a marriage ceremony in that regard. I'm up early this morning so I can start lifting. I finally talked to HR to get my keycard activated for the gym. It's free! Wohoo!

The only thing that sucks is how certain people perceive you... you know, as a a gym rat, obsessed with your appearance. Especially after this GTL Jersey Shore BS. The kind of chicks I tend to like are more intellectual/not shallow and some of them judge you based on that... You hear 'em say stuff like, "I hate too many muscles on guys" (Like that even makes anatomical sense) lol. Or, "I like really skinny guys." Here's my favorite: "I wonder what is he compensating for?" It's like they think guys who work out all the time are obsessed with themselves. Like you're walking around all day with a protein shake in a Metrx bottle. It sucks because self-absorption is the worst thing you can project if you're looking for a potential mate. I guess that makes the gym the perfect place to find a potential mate or even friends.

I just think it's fun to work towards a goal like that. Plus, I always feel rejuvenated after working out. I think clear, I have energy and I feel like I accomplished something. The gym atmosphere is great, too. You get to talk to random people.

Some of are dedicated!  You fast food eating slacker!

It gets harder as you get older.

Honestly, I don't think Jersey Shore had anything to do with this.  If anything STD's had a lot to do with the gym craze.  People started working out to prevent themselves from being physically out to diseases.  And in the mid 90's the internet blew up and physical attributes became an obnoxious.

I mean you are attracted to people physically first.  Now picking up people at the gym is tacky to me.  I'm not talking about the casual convo and that leads to going out.  I'm talking about the gym hawks that are there and hitting on everyone.  Those guys make me sick.  I'm there to work out not get my freak on.

On a side note, I returned to playing competitive volleyball and playing against guys who were 10-15 years younger than me kicked my ass the first three weeks.

I know what I am compensating for, so what are you compensating for???? ;)

But seriously, I can usually tell off the bat if someone is gym rat or just into fitness. But

I guess that comes from spending a lot of time in the gym myself. Right now I have not been lifting at all.

I took a major step forward with my running this summer, I adjusted my stride to get off my heels and now strike with my midfoot/forefoot. I have had awesome results. Right now my lunch time run is up to 6 miles in 45 min  and I have been injury free since early summer. I used to have problems with injuries (probably stress related) once I got 2-4 months into a heavy running cycle.

I haven't had time to get to the gym (5:30 AM is the only time that works) so I am going to start concentrating on doing the old stand bys like push-ups, pull-ups and using a band to do curls and extensions. I did the Kenpo P90X workout last night for the first time in about 6 months and breezed through it, which used to be moderately hard for me. So I guess my cardio fitness is pretty good. I'll let you know how the chest workout goes. That's a major B for me....

So I used to work out several times per week but since summer, have not really worked out at all.  But some of my behaviorial habits have changed:

I started riding my bike to work.  It's not far enough to really be considered a workout, but more active than sitting in my car commuting out to the suburbs (I changed offices, thus allowing me to ride my bike).

I also started eating breakfast regularly and drinking more water.  I really noticed I wasn't drinking enough water when I started riding my bike every day.  Now I make more of an effort to hydrate.

I quit snacking after dinner.

Probably most importantly, I stopped going out to bars.  This was due to having a baby around (or pregnant wife at the time in the summer), but not drinking and subsequently eating crappy bar food or late night food made a big difference.

Anyway, I've lost 20 lbs since the summer without really trying to lose it.  My clothes just started seeming a little bigger so I got on the scale and presto - 20 lbs gone!

How tall are you?  What is your goal weight?  Having a pregnant wife can most definitely make you eat more.  Men gain "baby weight" as well.

I'm 6'5" and presently 205 lbs.  I was 225.  I don't really have a goal weight, but more of a goal size.  Basically where my 36" pants feel a little roomy, which is where I am now.

205? Good god, I'm 6'6 and I'm about 290. I feel like if I got down to about 230 I'd be ideal. Last time I was 205 I wasn't able to drive yet. I look like an anorexic in those old pictures.

I weight 202.  That about right for out height/size.

AJ93 I think I need to send my grandmother AKA "the General" over to your crib to whip you into shape!

Yeah, I've let myself go for sure. Nevertheless, I can't ever see myself at that weight again. I look gaunt.

Trust me, if my fat lazy constantly out of breath and sweating cousin can lose 100 lbs, you can!

Losing the weight isn't an issue. I've never had a problem with dropping lbs. I just need to get into a workout routine. Like CBC, though, the only real time I could do it would be early am. I just haven't started the fire yet to motivate myself to start doing it.

I have my physical on Friday, presuming the doc doesn't tell me physical exertion will kill me I'll probably get the program started over the weekend.

I stand by my original assertion of 230 being the goal.

Listen "Mr. The BMI doesn't say I am obese" I thought 205 was really skinny for that height too. Right now I am stuck around 200-205 and I am only 5'10" (BTW you are all really Tall, Possible survey question MTS?).

Us tall people rule!  You little people ALWAYS have to look up to us!!!

What I wouldn't give to be 6'2"  :(

Us tall people rule! You little people ALWAYS have to look up to us!!!

Off topic, but I'm used to being the tallest guy in most rooms I walk into. This year, in my son's kindergarten class, there are 3 fathers who are taller than me. It's very disconcerting!

Height plays a role, but I've been 225 needing to lose 20 lbs and 225 being in great shape.  Muscle weighs more than fat.  Also each body type/frame is different.  Just look at basketball players.  Jamario Moon and LeBron are the same height, but have different ideal weights.

Two words. Tayshaun Prince. I always think that he is going to snap in half when I watch him play. He's listed at 205 lb and 6' 9" and that weight is probably padded a bit.

At my age, I am guessing that my ideal weight is probably around 190-195 lbs. Although it's been a real struggle breaking that 200lb barrier, I have been stuck here since the summer. I just realized this week that I now have that muscle on top of muscle look going with my quads and ham strings so I am guessing that added leg muscle is twarting my efforts. Oh well.

What I wouldn't give to be 6'2"  :(

Midget!

I dont like that feeling either.  I have several cousins, on my moms side of the family who are the same height as me.  Then I there is my brother, 6'6", and cousins who are 6'7" and 6'8".  I always get napolean complex around them.  I've been upset with my 6'8" cousin since May of 1983.  Hey I'm a Aries, we hold grudges!

I had a meeting with this guy who was probably 7'0" tall.  Just so that I would be in a position of power, every time I had to speak, I would stand up and spoke down to him.  I hate not being the tallest.

True.  I'm thin, most people my size are about 34-36" waist, mine is 32-33".  I'm svelte!  :P  I'll probably never gain weight, my moms father is tall and thin and hes been the same size the last 30 years.

Man, I swear, anything I say, you automatically have to say the opposite.

STDS? You mean AIDS? I don't know of anyone who works out to get rid of STDs. Except that woman who's always rock climbing in the Herpes commercial. I don't think there's anything wrong with eating fast food as long as you balance it out by eating healthy other parts of the day. I definitely noticed a difference though when I was consistent and made these natural protein shakes that used oatmeal and other good stuff for you. I've only been slacking because it's been a crazy time for me. My job is putting me through hell - I got home at 2am last night but it's getting to the point where I can be on a somewhat regular schedule.

I agree it's kinda tacky to do that, you basically have to look for cues but those rarely happen. It's pretty easy to spark a short conversation with someone though. You can tell the women who don't want to be bothered while doing their routine. Especially the ones who feel awkward there. I don't flirt with people at gyms, I just like sparking up a lot of short coversations.

I always thought it was funny when I'd do static contraction exercises (basically you do a rep - half way - and have your muscle flexed, remain static in that position for like 10 seconds to tear up your muscle fibres and I'd be doing it on the leg press and like 4 people would see me and run over like "ARE YOU OKAY?! YOU NEED ME TO PULL THE WEIGHT UP SO YOU CAN FINISH YOUR REP BEFORE YOU INJURE YOURSELF?!?!?" I'm like "uhh..no, I'm actually doing this on purpose" lol

You say that now. My dad was all ripped and had a six pack, then he turned 50 and all hell broke loose. I always give him sh!t for it.

I don't think I'd like being any taller than 6'3.

MY friend Rick is 6'6 and he hates it. I told him, "Women should be all over you! They love tall guys!" He said it doesn't necessarily work. He hates being so tall because EVERYBODY has something to say. EVERYBODY. ALL THE TIME. We went to Panama City Beach FL on Spring Break one year and I swear like every hour someone would come up to him and ask if he plays basketball.

I wouldn't mind being taller but at least I'm a little taller than average. I think the avg in America is 5'10 or 5'11. One of my brothers is 6'4 and the other is 5'8. The one that's 5'8 has a HUGE Napoleon complex. He takes steroids. I donated blood one time and he was like "I don't know how you can let someone stick you with a big needle; I could never do it. I was like DUDE YOU GIVE YOURSELF INTRAMUSCULAR INJECTIONS TO YOUR @SS CHEEK! His life ambition is to be a professional boxer. He's training for it. I really think being short messes with a lot of guys' psychology. He's the one I was talking about that always picks fights at bars for no reason and I have to go pick him up.

You kids are a mess.

What I mean, is that many people took to physical fitness so that other would not be able to detect if they had an STD.

Why in the hell are you working until 2 AM??  Hell, even I let thing 1 & 2 off of their leashes!

I've actually run interference for some women who are being hit on by men at the gym.  I think it's so tacky.

Na we're all thin.  My uncle is 9 years older than me (when I was growning up everyone thought that my two cousins and I were his kids.  Very much how people think my nephews are my kids.) and he just turned 52.  He's in great shape.

My Great Grandfather was thin all his life as well.  It's in the Genes - I'm going to be thin & svelte forever!!

Being tall definitely doesn't mean you get more dates.  I'm tall and I dont want to date anyone over 6'0".  I love to cuddle and it's super hard to cuddle with someone close to your size when you're tall.

I hate when people ask, "do you play bball?" when I would respond, "no, I play volleyball" i just get a blank expression.

On occasion when we are out together people have asked my cousin for an autograph thinking he's a ball player.  It's hillarious.  I'm like you need to give up those CH/OSU basketball dreams!

Also, when you're tall like him.  Finding clothing is a bitch.  I'm an irregular size and its painful for me.

Not to mention home furnishings.  Low sinks and toilets are pain.

A guy I used to work with was about 6'8 and over 300 if he was a pound. Whenever anyone asked him if he played football, he'd say no, were you ever a jockey? Hyuk hyuk hyuk.

Another friend who's about 6'4 built his own house about 7 yrs ago. Everything is customized to his height: Higher counters, ceilings, doors, even the doorknobs are higher than normal. He'll only be able to sell the house to another tall person, but he's comfortable in it now .

I've never been one to work out in a gym. I'm just not in the mood to socialize when I work out. Plus, I always feel like everyone's judging me.

What the recipe for the oatmeal protein shakes? Sounds interesting.

Keep in mind, this is usually for WEIGHT GAIN or after weightlifting when you need nutrient dense foods - carbs and protein for recovery. That, or you can do it as a healthy meal replacement. Correct me if I'm wrong but you're trying to 'cut' right now, right? I'm no Mr. Olympia or anything, I just read a lot of info online.

Basically, you can put whatever feels right into a shake. You have a coffee bean grinder? They're like less than 10 bucks at the store. Grind up your oats (oats are the most nutrient-dense food you can eat and contain most macro-nutrients as well as complex/simple carbs and a decent amount of protein) and cook the oatmeal a little bit before putting it in the blender. Like I said, you can basically add whatever ingredients you want if you don't like some of these things but oatmeal is more like the base that gives it thickness, like bananas are a base in a smoothie.

Go here for recipes.

If you can't stand the taste, well...at least it's better than paying for expensive weight gainer or 4 bucks for a shake out of a vending machine! It's probably a lot better for you, Most supplements other than Protein powder are a gimmick.

My cousin says that!  Or he'll all "little people" vertically challenged.  Lately he's been calling them "Tea Cup sized" people.

In regards to furnishing, that's how I built renovated in Shaker and completely built the house in Harlem.  I installed the extra length bathtubs, my counter and sinks are at 40" versus 33".  All that bending over is murder on your lower back!

You think people are judging you?  Really.  Just throw a bar bell at them.  That will clear things up!

I've never been one to work out in a gym. I'm just not in the mood to socialize when I work out. Plus, I always feel like everyone's judging me.

No one intentionally goes to the gym JUST to socialize. If they are, they're a f-ing DOUCHE and aren't there for the right reasons, imo. I used to feel like people were judging me because I'm not exactly the biggest or leanest person in gyms, especially a couple years ago when I wasn't in as good of shape but you get over it fast and realize you're just there for you. I love seeing overweight and obese people in the gym. It means they're doing what they set out to do! It's great. I give them a lot of props for having the courage to do what they need to do in a setting where they're succeptible to being judged by a few. The worst is when people judge women for being overweight. I'm sick of seeing all these sitcoms where the wife is bangin and the husband is allowed to be all fat and inept like this is just what's acceptable in society. Then we always have something to say when a WOMAN has put on some pounds, like it's completely unacceptable in our society. It's a crazy double standard if you ask me.

I'm under 200 lbs for the first time since 8th grade (circa 1991).  When I played sports in HS/College, I usually hung around 225, but it was a fairly lean 225 and I am 6"2.  Now that I don't have time for 6 days a week at the gym, I like my current weight..... not saying that I wouldn't trade 5 pounds of fat for 5 pounds of muscle if given the option.  But I never thought I would be under 200 because I have a relatively large frame.  The trick for me was all dietery.  No fried foods, completely cut dairy out, and I make sure I get my fiber in daily (for big guys, you should go higher than what is represented on the package.... e.g., if something says 35% of daily fiber value, I only count it for 20%).

6 days a week in the gym?! That's overkill. I don't workout in gyms anymore than 4x a week. It's counter-productive for me. Of course everyone is different though.

I think that I am about done cutting. I have really reached a plateau, and the sacrifices required to go to the next level just are not going to happen right now. My plan is to keep the running up, work on building strength up with at home exercises and hopefully hit the weight room 2 or 3 times a week to get in some bulk building exercises. My weight will start to go up again as I add muscle but as long as my waist gets smaller or stays the same, I will be happy (36 dress pants,34 jeans).

Haha.  I was talking to a buddy of mine about the commercials which constantly put out this picture of the American family.  Not only is the husband fat, but he is usually dumb and goofy too.  I believe it is a psychological ploy.  The product they are selling to the male viewers who will see this goofball with the hot wife and think how lucky he is.  The women viewers will see this hot woman who was able to look past the superficial and judge her husband for his "inner beauty".  They will want to own the products these people have.

Yeah, in real life it's more like they look past his obesity and ineptitude because he's the breadwinner and hands out credit cards but I digress.

well you dont need to go to the gym everyday but try some physicall activity, daily.

I run 4 times a week.  I hit the gym every other day and play volleyball twice a week.

I think you should balance things out.

You just told the secret!  DAMN YOU!!

I should have your cable and internet cut!  >:D

Not overkill when you have to keep up with the rest of the gym rats on the field of play.  Off the top of my head..... Day One - power legs (squats, dead lifts, calf raises, parachutes and other cardio); Day two - power upper body (power cleans, flat, incline, decline bench, pull-ups, rows, military press); Day three - heavy cardio and light legs (nautilis); Day four - Dumb bell workouts (all three benches, military, flies, upright rows, curls for the girls and tri's for the guys); Day five - burnout lower body (hills, lunges, leg presses, jump rope); Day six - burnout upper body - (Bench strips, 7's, nautilis); Day seven - REST

Keep in mind though that I preferred to keep my workouts to 1 hour.  I preferred 1 hour, six days a week to 2 hours, 3 days a week.

That is a relatively new phenomenon on TV. I'd say it started with Roseanne, but they were both kind of slobs. King of Queens maybe with Kevin James? The Jim Belushi show? Grounded for Life had an schlub husband and hot wife too. I guess Fred  and Wilma Flintstone was the prototype.

But back in the day Mr. and Mrs. Brady had the 70s attractiveness going on. In real life most couples seem to be on the same level of chubbiness/attractiveness.

I am sure that MTS has a market research document on this somewhere.

Well there is a little bit of reality in it.  I look at my parents.  My mom is hot!  My mom is in her mid 60's and she's still a fit model size 8 or a 10 based on the designer.  My dad on the other hand, is startig to slip.

Since my brother and the kids moved in and my brother moved his gym in, he started working out after some dude "hollered" at my Mom and called my father a "gramps".

Most people think my neices/nephews are my moms kids, not her grand children.  I know that bothers my Dad.

What's your workout routine like? You're really lean, you do a lot of cardio? I hate cardio but I do it every now and then. I walk to my destinations whenever I can, so that helps. I haven't played sports in a while but I'd like to get back into basketball. I might start going where my brother boxes, or sign up at the recreation center at Schiller Park in German Village, it seems like they have a lot going on there. I really need to get involved in something like that to make new, quality friends.

Oh, P.S. I didn't get home last night until really late because I have to do these mandatory training classes at night because none of the new people at my company know anything about the technology we're deal with. It isn't even covered in any college classes. It's easy, but it gets tiring. I went to bed at like 2 and woke up at like 5 so I'm running on no sleep.

Is the Schiller Rec still insanely cheap? When I lived there in 2001-2002, it was $50 for the year. All of the equipment wasn't the newest and greatest but they had a lot of it and if you were creative you could do any exercise that you wanted.

^^Get a bike and adopt a "why drive when I can ride philosophy".  People underestimate the type of cardio you get from riding a bike around an urban environment.... especially the upper body workout you can get.  Walking does very little, IMO, to improve your appearance if you are in relatively decent shape.  It helps maintain your weight.... or cuts weight from the obese.... but walking alone will do little for people like you and me.
