These two articles appeared , or were reposted in the Dayton Most Metro forum, and they make for interesting reading. One is a Dayton Daily News op-ed (Kevin Riley is the editor), the other is an actual article from the Dayton Business Journal.  Notably, neither the mayor or city manager of Dayton were involved with this visit, which appears to have organized by a TV news guy?

Last week a group of local leaders took a bus trip to Louisville, Ky., a city that is being lauded as a model of government reform and regional cooperation.

 

The idea behind the trip, which was put together by WDTN-TV Channel 2's Dan Edwards, was for us to have a look at what has occurred in Louisville.

 

We aren't alone in this interest. Officials in Louisville said the Dayton group, which included the Montgomery County commissioners and other local government officials, was among more than 70 such delegations that have visited. As cities around the country struggle, leaders are looking at how to change governmental operations. Debates specifically about merging governments are going on in Pittsburgh and Cleveland...

Officials begin campaign for regionalism

Dan Foley wants to tear down walls between municipalities, merge some government services and reform local tax structure. His focus — on what is known as regionalism — is designed to make the county more economically competitive.

 

Foley, a Montgomery County commissioner, looks to raise about $1 million in the next nine months to forge a regionalism public awareness campaign — run like a political campaign complete with grass roots volunteers and broadcast advertising — that would kick off in a year’s time and last three years...

 

Imagine how big Cleveland would be if it merged with Cuyahoga County.

^Then there would be no more shaker heights.
