Posted December 2, 200816 yr Fireworks after horse carriage parade Higbee's (Public Square) Public Square (Didn't go through all the decorations but I'll be visiting the lights again once I get back) Tower City (Had to wait a couple hours after the event so I can even try taking pictures inside) Some of the Ginger Bread houses displayed in tower city The rock hall.... Up to and including E. 4th st.
December 2, 200816 yr Love the articulated bus picture. Spending the holidays in downtowns sure is fun.
December 2, 200816 yr Love nighttime street shots...looks like lots of possibly once-a-year downtown visitors were checking out E. 4th.
December 2, 200816 yr Took some of my family members from Detroit down there with their 2 children and they loved it. They told me they didn't know of anything like that in their downtown, which I find hard to believe perhaps they just don't know. We arrived kind of late however and couldn't really see much of the parade but all along the route and E.4th / Warehouse District / Public Square were packed at the conclusion of the event. All in all it was a blast like usual but I kind of wish the ice skating still took place on public square instead of University Circle On another note my camera doesn't take night shots well and there were a ton of other visual things to see which I just could not capture but perhaps one day I'll remedy that.
December 2, 200816 yr Yea it just opened up in the last couple of months and the Caddilac Ranch didn't look as bad as some made it out to be. I almost didn't even notice the cadillac ontop but I knew it was there and looked for it. I looked inside and it seemed like it was packed along with the outside bar which I thought was neat with the fire roaring up from the middle of it, which you can kind of see in the picture right above the last Caddilac Ranch pic.
December 2, 200816 yr Yeah, some people in Cincinnati thought it looked tacky but it's a nice place with good food. I dig fire pits.
December 3, 200816 yr Thanks! "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
December 4, 200816 yr I went down there with my wife and kids. Had a great time, kids really enjoyed themselves. I couldn't believe all the people that were in Tower City! We got off the Rapid and from there till you got out to Public Square it was pretty much a sea of bodies. I loving experiencing the city during the holidays. Some of my favorite memories are visiting the O'Neils department store in DT Akron when I was a kid. We'd watch the parade, then everyone would file into O'Neils, go up the escalators, and then wait in line to see Santa. Going to the mall at Christmas time just can't beat the memories of being downtown during the holiday season IMO.
December 4, 200816 yr Looks like a festive good time! Hop into my time machine and come along back to Public Square twenty years ago:
December 4, 200816 yr Kids today just don't know what they are missing. My 13 year old neice and 15 & 12 year old nephews vaguely remember shoping downtown. The 7, 8 year olds have no clue what's inside of "that building". They'll never know Mr. Jingleling, the Christmas slide, the kids lunch at the Silver Grille, the "shop of old things", the after christmas basement sale or my personal favorite the "scratch and dent" room. :'( :'( :'( :'(
December 4, 200816 yr This is my first Christmas in Cleveland and it is shocking to me that there is no ice skating downtown... either on the square or on one of the malls. Any good reason for this?
December 4, 200816 yr They used to have one right on public square but now it has been moved to University Circle. Last year they actually had one outside of the Science Center. Not sure the reason for removing the one on public square though. Is there some kind of rule that skating rinks have to be downtown? Dont have an actual picture of the one at university circle except for this rendering
December 4, 200816 yr There used to be rink where the galleria currently stands as well. I wouldn't say the Public Square rink "moved" I would say University Circle decided to build a rink of their own. I guessing the question as to why there is no rink downtown should be directed to the folks at the Downtown Partnership? :?
December 4, 200816 yr Yea sry didn't actually mean the same people moved the rink. If University Circle does this every year however, which I think it already had some plans to do so, it will make it even more difficult to get one on Public Square again. This is a pic from 2004 on public square

This is a pic from 2004 on public square I disagree. The locations make it possible for more people to enjoy. [rant] This city is large enough to have more than one speciality item, restaurant, neighborhood, etc. without people in general (NOT YOU) thinking we cannot support it. ughhhhhhhhh![/rant]
December 4, 200816 yr Well I guess it depends then on what the reasons for the closing of the ice skating rink on public square was and I tried looking but found no information on it. Was it because of the construction around the square, size, weather (since it was made with real ice unlike the one at UC which is made of polymer stuff), attendance, economic issues, etc. If it is the attendance and economic issues that ultimately closed the rink then I would just assume it would be harder. I'm not saying that 2 of them couldn't both be open especially since more and more people are heading to downtown in the last couple years as well as the new entertainment features that have opened up close by.

That is exactly why I stated asking the downtown partnership is in order.
December 4, 200816 yr I already sent them an e-mail asking for any details they can give me regarding the reasons of the closure and any future plans for an ice skating rink in Downtown. I'll post a reply if I get any information back.

December 5, 200816 yr You guys rock... ask and you shall receive! I also don't see why the UC rink and a downtown rink can't coexist. I would think that FCE would subsidize part of the rink as well since it would give children throughout greater Cleveland something else to nag their parents about and get more people downtown and specifically into Tower City. That synthetic crap at UC won't fly anyway... put the real stuff downtown and people will flock. At least I will!

Mayor can you pull some strings? lol
December 5, 200816 yr All I'll say is that like most non-profits, and one that relies heavily on sponsors, their budget is extremely tight. I'm assuming the ice rink went away due to financial feasibility. I was once a part of a focus group study / interview put on by the people (out of towners) who kind of set up the DCA and make reccomendations to the panel governing it, and they mentioned the staggering costs of winterfest in general and asked what I thought about canceling it. I as politely as I possibly could (murder may have crossed my mind) told this individual it was not an option. But needless to say, like a lot of organizations I think they are doing the best they can with the funds that are available to them. There are some really, really good people who work in that organization.
December 5, 200816 yr Looks like a festive good time! Hop into my time machine and come along back to Public Square twenty years ago: Cool! I remember it like it was yesterday; on the NE or NW quadrant of PS there was a care bears carousel, on 55 PS a huge stocking made of lights, and on the Erieview Tower a Christmas tree made of lights on the E and W sides. The tree on the Erieview tower could be seen for miles away driving down the shoreway.

Yes, American Greeting sponsored it but it was just the worst IMO.
