I am planning a weekly radio show that will discuss urban issues and development in Cincinnati.  It will also cover some economic issues, politics, local events, and Ohio/Midwest issues as well.  It will broadcast live every week on Bearcast (UC's student Internet radio station), Fridays from 10am-Noon [time has changed], and will also be podcasted so you can download it later if you can't listen live.

I'm a follower of UrbanOhio and lots of Cincinnati development blogs, but I'm certainly not an expert in Urban Planning or anything like that.  Therefore, I will be enlisting the help of several local respected bloggers, journalists, and experts.  I hope to have a rotating panel on the show to discuss the week's topics, as well as interviews with project developers, local business owners, and maybe even politicians.

I am putting the final touches on the details of the show now, so any suggestions or comments anyone has would be very helpful!  I am also looking for creative ideas for the title of the show.

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Oh so that was you I got the email from.  I'm still willing to help as best I can...good luck.

This sounds like something we've needed for a while now.  Keep us posted.

The show will be called Explore Cincinnati and have an accompanying blog at explorecincinnati.com.

I've met with Rando, jmeck, and Kevin (buildingcincinnati) and we generated a long list of topics to discuss on the show.  My question for everyone here is, what do you want to see discussed?  Is there a certain project that you want weekly coverage of?  Is there a specific topic that you want discussed, such as bicycling in Cincinnati or businesses selling locally-made products?  Or guests that you want to hear from, such as business owners, developers, or politicians?

Your feedback will help shape this show!

Thanks,

Travis

Every week should dedicate a decent amount of time for a specific chosen project.  You could also do small updates of what's going on in the city.  There isn't much that you shouldn't cover, more items discussed makes if more marketable.

Sounds like a great idea. If you're looking for suggestions, I would like to see a show that focuses on Cincinnati's built environment and transportation issues specifically. Maybe do a segment on different Cincinnati neighborhoods every show.

I think it would be cool to talk to residents about their neighborhoods, get their perspective on where they live. You could probably just walk around a neighborhood, find a random resident and ask them about their experiences. Kind of like making "found" essays. Katherine Durack does something like this for the Xavier NPR station except hers is more "poetic," if that's the proper term, and totally from her perspective. Sounds like a wonderful project, good luck!

Thanks everyone.  The first episode is this Friday and the main topic is going to be the urban population, in addition to the week's latest news.

I'm listening right now online. Very cool show.

I was unable to listen in.  Is there going to be a podcast available?

Yes, taestell should know when it will be up and either he or I will link to it here.

The podcast is up!  The forum won't let me link to it from here, but the URL is:

itpc://pod.explorecincinnati.com/podcast-low.xml

Paste that into your browser's address bar, or in iTunes, go to Advanced > Subscribe to Podcast and paste that URL.

Just click on this link to open the podcast in iTunes. Then click on "Subscribe".

Excellent show!  I'll be looking forward to this every Friday.

Travis I just got the podcast to work and listened to it.  Great job organizing this first show and I think you did a great job keeping the discussion moving.

The podcast sounds great.

The podcast sounds great.

It's all that extra compression I put on everyone's voice before I put out the podcast. :D

You might have to daisy chain a few compression units for Chris Cousins.

Sounded great all y'all.

Here's a preview of tomorrow's (today's -- it's 1 AM!) show:

If you have any comments while the show is going on (live, of course, not the podcast), send me an AOL IM at "DJ Bearcast".  I might even open up the phone line for some calls, depending on time.

Joining me on the phone for part of the show is "UncleRando" himself!

Great, thanks.

We're going on the air at 10AM on BearcastRadio.com to play back and discuss last night's Streetcar debate.  Please IM me your comments at DJ Bearcast on AIM, or call in and we'll put you on the air.  (Podcast will be available later tonight.)

Travis, thanks for your work recording the debate and having another well-organized show.

This week, I will be interviewing Mark Miller from COAST about their opposition to the city's investment in the Glencoe/Inwood Village project.  If you have any questions for them, email me at [email protected]

No problem.  With a full time job and two small kids, I have nothing but time.  ;-)

Today’s episode of Explore Cincinnati is now online.  Refresh your Podcasts in iTunes (or subscribe now) to receive the latest episode, or listen in your browser below.

I started out responding to “The Beacon Challenge,” a series of “10” questions asked of me by Mr. Haap.  At about the 22:30 mark in the show, we begin to discuss the Glencoe/Inwood Village project, featuring an interview with Mr. Mark Miller from COAST. I discuss the new Chase Elementary School in Northside, Mayor Mallory’s trip to Washington to meet with Obama, and a few other stories as well.

Quote from my radio show: "Our popular culture has depicted buses as a place for creeps and weirdos."  (Specifically referring to this anti-bus ad for the Chevrolet Cavalier, although, admittedly, I did not reference this ad during my show.)

Haap's response: Bearcast Radio DJ tags buses for “creeps and weirdos”

Here's an analogy.

Person A: "Pop culture cares about what Paris Hilton is up to.  I don't care about Hilton, and wish people didn't waste their time caring about such irrelevant celebrities."

Person B: "Obviously you care about what Paris Hilton is doing."

Person A: "That doesn't make sense.  I specifically stated that that I don't."

Person B: "But by repeating pop culture's view, you must agree with it!"

Definition of non sequitur: "Latin for it does not follow. In formal logic, is an argument where its conclusion does not follow from its premises."

Who is this Dave Keaton cat? His answer was roads?! Whaaaaaa???

Haha.  He's a Bearcast sports guy and I wasn't planning on having him discuss any of the development stuff.  He's a great guy but he obviously hasn't done the basic research behind the Streetcar project... saying that it will take 5 years to build (not true), cost $400 million dollars (about double the actual cost), and go up Vine Street (which may or may not happen).  He also cited Bill Cunningham, and he wasn't aware of the fact that this project is trying to encourage development in OTR and Uptown, not just run a Streetcar through the existing neighborhood and be done with it.  I think his level of knowledge on this particular project was fairly obvious.

I sounded pretty coherent for being seriously sleep deprived.  That morning had absolutely spectacular sunlight so thanks a lot for motivating me to get out of bed early.

It's been a slow news week!

So if you have something you want to talk about... a project in Cincinnati, a project in Ohio, or even something across the country... call into the show today.  Starts at 10am today.

http://bearcastradio.com/

I subscribed to the podcast, and friggin' LOVE IT!  Fantastic stuff...listened to the most recent show first (the 12:00 one, which despite its short length did give me a good recap and update of current projects and issues), and then started back with the January shows, working my way forward.  You do a great job hosting, and Jake and Randy are both fantastic guests...I'll give more feedback as I listen to more episodes, but yeah, this is some great stuff!

^Yeah Travis does a great job, and thanks for the kind words about my guest appearances...I'll be back on the show more often once I get back from Greece in early April.

Thanks for your kind words!  Feel free to give any feedback, I'm always looking for ways to improve the show.

I finally got around to posting the most recent episode, talking about my tour of the commercial spaces of the Gateway Quarter.

Also, for those of you who listen to the show live (as opposed to the podcast), the show's time slot will be changing for Spring Quarter.  It's not finalized yet, but I will let you know as soon as it is.  If you subscribe to the podcast, nothing will change; you will continue to get all of the episodes as you do now.

Yeah, Travis ... you've got a niche for talk radio. Good job!

Anyone who listens to the show live -- our time slot is moving to Wednesdays 2-4pm starting next week.  If you listen via podcast, you don't have to change anything; you will continue to get future episodes normally as you do now.

The goal for this quarter is to focus several episodes on individual Cincinnati neighborhoods, and have a guest who can talk about some of the major projects happening there.  I hope to represent Downtown, OTR, West End, CUF/Heights/Corryville, Clifton, Northside, and move out from there as I find guests to talk about their neighborhoods.  As always, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!  (Reply here or email [email protected]).
