Posted December 17, 200816 yr As Georgia's second (/third if you count Augusta-Richmond County) largest city with 186,000 residents, I expected a bit more. Most of Ohio's midsize cities surpass Columbus in building stock and urbanity.
December 17, 200816 yr What brought you to Columbus, GA? And what's the deal with the empty building?
December 17, 200816 yr interesting and ok. i get a downtown lima vibe. i think it may lack urbanity because despite similar populations i see its 220 sq mi vs say dayton 56 sq mi.
December 17, 200816 yr Looks like a nice enough town, but I prefer OUR Columbus to be honest, but I'm from Our Columbus so I'm a bit biased!

December 17, 200816 yr What brought you to Columbus, GA? And what's the deal with the empty building? You'll see in a later thread. I didn't get very close to that building because of all the activity, so I can't say.

December 18, 200816 yr I like the mid century mod skyscraper. Is it a corporate office tower or a govt building?
December 18, 200816 yr Ugh. My thoughts exacly! "ugh" to the city*. * (well really the South as a whole) :P
December 18, 200816 yr Is it a corporate office tower or a govt building? That building is the Muscogee County Courthouse and is the tallest structure downtown with 13 floors. Columbus only has one historic tower, a 10-story red brick hotel that has been surrounded by a mixture of odd towers, as you can see above. The tallest building in Columbus is actually AFLAC's headquarters at 246 feet, but it isn't located downtown.
December 19, 200816 yr I do like the tower. Why are really generic-looking signs charming in NYC but almost nowhere else? I don't know, but it's true.

December 19, 200816 yr I worked in Columbus for a few months. Reminded me of a cross between Hamilton and Sydney Ohio. Beautiful region from the river downtown to Calloway Gardens... I enjoyed my short stint there...

Grrrr, in your pics it looks cool and integrated into the city....but that overhead shot with all the parking and the access road...not so much.

Note that the Live Local shot is of the AFLAC headquarters outside of downtown, not the courthouse.
December 19, 200816 yr The smaller building in the center kind of reminds me of the Richland County Courthouse in Mansfield.....
December 24, 200816 yr I attended basic training at nearby Ft. Benning back in '84. They used to tell us that we would learn just enough hand -to- hand combat to go into Columbus and get our asses kicked..... Oh, and Victory Drive was renamed VD drive, in honor of the hookers thereon.
