Posted December 17, 200816 yr When 100+ year old water mains break and leave me with no water!!!! I'm starting to keep count. Mornings without water since July 16th: 2 (The first was the water main break at E. 13th and Rockwell back in August-ish).
December 17, 200816 yr I had very little water this morning in Lakewood, and my office downtown has none. That must be one big pipe.

December 17, 200816 yr We had no water as of 8:30 this morning in Tremont, but as of a few minutes ago (10:00am) there's been a decent amount. Pressure's not as high as usual and I'm boiling as a precaution, but it's definitely more than this morning. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram

December 17, 200816 yr So after being late to work because of the water situation this morning, I go to purchase a bunch of acetonitrile (an organic solvent) to purify some compounds, and I get told there's some massive worldwide shorage that might not be resolved until the end of the first quarter of next year! So let me get this straight - I need water and acetonitrile out of all the liquids in the world, and those are the only two that are in a shortage right now? :bang: I would say I should go home, but I think I can flush the toilet here at work.....
December 17, 200816 yr We keep getting emails here at work as to businesses we use that are closing/affected, including many of the courts. And yet, here we sit. Our toilets are still flushing, albeit brown water. We never seem to be the lucky ones that get to go home.
December 17, 200816 yr no water at my downtown office which has closed. I was not able to celibrate b/c I had appointments at the justice center and jail....but then found they have no water either. So I am working from home right now and thankfully still have water. Obama needs to hook us up with some funds. Maybe it will be like the depression and everyone can get to work on it.
December 17, 200816 yr Well the buildings right across the street from me (north and south) are closed yet our building remains open for some reason.
December 17, 200816 yr They recently announced that water is back on in my building, but they suggested that we boil it first for the rest of the day.

December 17, 200816 yr We have a microwave and that's about it. I'm still drinking coffee that was made downstairs this morning... should I be? Coffee gets pretty hot when they're making it.
December 17, 200816 yr No water problems at my portion of Old Brooklyn (near Steelyard Commons). And no problems at my office near East 55th and Kinsman.
December 17, 200816 yr Now I don't even know what to do for lunch. My co-worker and I were supposed to go out and she got pulled into a meeting that's going to last until 1 and now I don't even know what's open and what's not downtown. RATS!
December 17, 200816 yr ^I packed my lunch this morning and was offering my to sell portions of my lunch to my coworkers. 1 ham and cheese sandwich $10! Get it before supplies run out.

My co-worker and I were supposed to go out and she got pulled into a meeting that's going to last until 1 and now I don't even know what's open and what's not downtown. RATS! Take the Healthline to UC! No time for that. We're a grab it out, bring it back and eat it at your desk type of workplace. I got an absolutely disgusting omelet from the key cafeteria. I don't know why I bother trying to eat anything there except salad, it's disgusting. Over half went in the trash.

We've got plenty of frozen stuff or things I could make without water or with bottled water. Oh well.
December 17, 200816 yr RnR, you shouldn't eat out - like I shouldn't date! Seems we're both frequently disappointed with our choices. ;)
December 17, 200816 yr So I wake up this morning at 7, fill up the coffee maker, then go to rinse a dish in the kitchen sink. In the time between my filling up the coffee maker and trying to rinse the dish, I lost all water pressure (probably because my building's two hot water heaters suddenly drained). It started to recover by 8 a.m., but not much more than a steady small stream. It was enough to refill toilets and for me to fill up my sink so I could wash up somewhat and then brush my teeth. And I needed to look all pretty for a television interview in Akron at 10 a.m. When the segment on passenger trains airs (don't know when yet), you'll have to let me know if I succeeded (be nice). So, yes, being without water is a pet peeve, especially when I live within three blocks of the largest source of freshwater on Earth. December 17, 200816 yr RnR, you shouldn't eat out - like I shouldn't date! Seems we're both frequently disappointed with our choices. ;) Agreed, honey. I usually bring my lunch but since I thought I was having lunch with this person I didn't. After I threw out the disgusting omelet I raided the fridge for whatever junk I brought in and left here and found some cheese and olives that are still good, so I'm eating those with some crackers.
December 17, 200816 yr Alright, whoever wants to b!tch about a minor news story involving a typical water main break - here's your thread. I'm off to go flush toilets for fun - they've been fine since about 9:45am. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
December 17, 200816 yr It's not a typical water main break when so many downtown office towers are emptied that RTA had to get their entire complement of suburban park-n-ride buses up and running to take people back home.... ________________ RTA will operate the following service to Park-N-Ride lots from 10:00am - noon Wednesday, December 17, 2008. Go to your normal pick-up locations: 239 : Euclid Park-N-Ride 246 : Westlake Park-N-Ride 251 : Strongsville Park-N-Ride 263 : North Olmsted Park-N-Ride 451 : Laurel Square RTA will operate regular service the rest of the day, including normal PM rush-hour service to all Park-n-Ride lots. December 17, 200816 yr I showered, washed my dishes, and my laundry in this stuff before knowing there was a boil alert. I hope that's OK, and that I didn't swallow any water in the shower! I was wondering why the pressure was all funky.
December 17, 200816 yr Sorry, people on this forum haven't been freaking out so much, but after seeing cleveland.com's comments and peoples' Facebook postings, you'd swear it's the apocalypse. Hey i was just hoping for a paid day off! haha

December 17, 200816 yr it is too late for me. I never had any problems with pressure at home so I thought I was fine. I drank water from the fridge water dispenser. I did turn off the ice machine though when I got home. I wonder how long it will take me to get sick?

The boiling is always precautionary due to the "possibility" that contaminates may enter the system when the pressure drops. You probably won't get sick -- sure hope you don't :-). Plus, many newer refrigerators have built in water filters which offer another layer of protection for you.

December 17, 200816 yr in situations like this you really need to injest more than you would tooth brushing or showering (minimal if any at all). for instance in parts of Mexico were the water is not fit to drink, I have brushed my teeth. This is not recommended, but you probably won't get sick.

I would'nt brush my teeth in MessyCo with tap water. Ms. Peabody, you like living life on the edge!
December 17, 200816 yr 327- im in lakewood too really close to River, I cant seem to get an answer out of anyone, are we on boil alert? Better safe than sorry. If low pressure is what raises the risk of contamination, and I had low pressure this morning, I don't see why the boil alert stops at 117th. I can wait a night for tapwater. Unfortuanately I'm one of the few people who still drinks tapwater. I frequently make fun of people for buying bottled water, and they're all laughing at me now.
December 17, 200816 yr I got a phone call this morning from the University (CSU) telling EVERYONE to leave campus because of a water emergancy! But lucky for me, I left Lakewood a week ago. =-0)

December 17, 200816 yr The most serious concerns regarding boil alerts are for those who have seriously compromised immune systems (elderly, infants, etc.). clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram

OK, everyone affected just boil your water and stay healthy! All I'm saying is I wouldn't be too worried myself if I had a glass from the fridge or brushed my teeth this morning -- the main concern with a water main break/pressure loss is possible contamination via back-flow into the system, not necessarily specific contamination like e. coli. This is why we have "anti-siphon" valves in our toilets, back-flow prevention valves in any commercial/industrial setting, and even anti-siphon hose bibs in any new home costruction so someone's hot tub water can't get sucked back into the water system when the pressure drops.

We drink so much water I cannot imagine buying it in the bottle (unless I am stuck somewhere and am really thirsty). Plus the waste of bottles -good grief-I don't want to burn in hell for that. Until we had a fridge filter , we would refill gallons at water machines. I can really taste something funky in tap water. I know it is 100% safe (more so than bottled water ), but unless it is iced down a lot, I can taste weirdness.
December 18, 200816 yr Here it is 11 p.m. and my water still has a rusty look to it. I'm on Lakewood's Gold Coast, three block west of the "boil water zone" which ends at West 117th. I'm just not using water for drinking -- sticking to Diet Cokes for now.
