Posted December 30, 200816 yr A well-to-do streetcar suburb with an active Main St (aptly located on Main St). Bexley is filled with grand homes and home to Capital University as well as a sizable Jewish population. There are some quality dining options and among other shops lining their downtown is the independent Drexel Theatre. It's an attractive neighborhood and a short distance from Downtown.
December 30, 200816 yr Bexley is a very underrated suburb in this state. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
December 30, 200816 yr nice - you got St. Charles in there... And isn't bexley home to the governor's mansion?
December 30, 200816 yr ^Yes sirrrrr. Also home to president of Ohio State University. Very, very pretigious neighborhood.
December 30, 200816 yr It's nicer than Cleveland Heights. Btw, Leslie Wexner, R.L. Stein, and Larry Flynt have all lived there at one point. In addition to some major politicians.
December 30, 200816 yr It's nicer than Cleveland Heights. Btw, Leslie Wexner, R.L. Stein, and Larry Flynt have all lived there at one point. In addition to some major politicians. How can you say that? I've been to both. I know CH much more intimately than Bexley, but to me, Bexley rand Cleveland Hts. are very similar. How often have you been to CH?
December 30, 200816 yr I want to move to Bexley, but I'm having trouble finding rent under $750 for a 2BR. Go figure.
December 30, 200816 yr It's interesting to see Bexley's strategy of becoming more dense and urban on Main Street, with multi-story mixed-use buildings just west of the Drexel Theater. Other suburbs are doing the same: Creekside in Gahanna; across from Kingsdale in Upper Arlington; and the new Nationwide plans in Grandview Heights.
December 30, 200816 yr Thank God. They have a university right there - it wouldn't make sense to keep the status quo. I don't care what anyone says - I love Creekside in Gahanna!
December 30, 200816 yr Bexley is basically a newer and maintained version of Olde Towne East, which doesn't need gentrifying since it didn't decline. It's technically its own city, but obviously entirely dependent on Columbus as is usual with suburbs like these. Another interesting thing about Bexley are the more obscure neighborhoods surrounding it; Berwick (well-off residential neighborhood, but no urban Main St., just car crap), Eastmoor (nice residential on the west and more modest to the east and south with a suburbanized and ghetto-ized Main St., expect a thread soon), and East Columbus (the most run-down and dangerous of the bunch just over the railroad tracks, but some intact urban commercial clusters). Bexley is always great for riding around on a bike and I'm there right now actually. It was warm enough to sit out on the patio for a while.
December 30, 200816 yr Looks great! It reminds me a little of Oakwood in Dayton. Oakwood is more curvilinear than Bexley, but the idea is the same. It reminds me of Cleveland Hts. Kinda, kinda not. The commercial district is Cleveland Heights-ish but residentially, it's more Rocky River/Bay Village. December 31, 200816 yr I'd add that Bexley has a Wyoming vibe for Cincy folks - though it is much closer to the core. It is essentially what Avondale might have looked like if it had never become a part of the city.
January 6, 200916 yr also, (the world's most boring) former nationally syndicated newspaper columnist, bob greene, was from there too. he used to write about it in his columns. not to mention he lost it all due to as big a scandal as any larry flynt ever caused!: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Greene
January 7, 200916 yr I would say who can forget that Bexley notable, Laurie Lea Schaefer--Miss America 1972, but apparently many people have. She had a brief career as an actress. You mean you don't remember her appearance on Three's Company 27 years ago? http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0769638/ http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
January 7, 200916 yr Thanks for the Bob Greene Wikipedia link, mrnyc. I did not know about the Howard the Duck connection, and I need to go back to my complete HTD collection to check out the first Dr. Bong episode. I'm told (one of those friend-of-a-friend-of-a-friend deals) that when Greene was a Tribune columnist and came back to Columbus to write about Bexley, he stayed at the downtown Holiday Inn instead of his parents' house.
January 7, 200916 yr Bexley is nice. Its my favorite suburb, also, my grandmother went to Capital back in the 20s!
January 8, 200916 yr Leslie Wexner, R.L. Stein, and Larry Flynt have all lived there at one point. That's an interesting collection of people.
January 8, 200916 yr ^Ahahaha, remember when people called New Albany "Wexley"? LOL. It might as well be. His estate is massive. A lot of the big shot executives for Limited brands, Abercrombie and such reside there.
January 10, 200916 yr well as far as war if you want to add a pre-bexley chapter to the "people's history" i am sure some natives were killed and run off around there. this is america after all. Leslie Wexner, R.L. Stein, and Larry Flynt have all lived there at one point. That's an interesting collection of people. that damn goosebumps halloween episode where the kids put the masks on but then cant take them off freaked me out! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0591374/ Carly Beth Caldwell: [Possessed by the haunted mask] And this, is Carly Beth's head! Sabrina: [Referring to the mask] It's not made of real skin, is it? Carly Beth Caldwell: Maybe. Shopkeeper: Only you, Carly Beth. You're the only one that ever wanted them, the only one who ever loved them. Carly Beth Caldwell: No! No! I want it off! I want it off, now! Take it off me! I hate this stupid face! I hate it! I hate it! Shopkeeper: Carly Beth, I'm sorry, but this face is your face now. Carly Beth Caldwell: [trying to take the mask off] The mask...it won't come off. Sabrina: Really? Can't get it off? Carly Beth Caldwell: It's like it's stuck to my skin. :-o
January 10, 200916 yr i didnt read it but i saw the tv show version of that one. you talk about haunting & disturbing, man, stephen king aint got nothing on that one!
January 10, 200916 yr Ha! I have managed to locate 3 apts./duplexes "close enough" to Bexley at $750 or under just off Livingston and 70 near the Leipzig Haus. Gonna go check 'em out next week!
January 10, 200916 yr ^Man, when I was a little kid, I was obsessed with Goosebumps. It got me addicted to reading. The early ones were by far the best. I think I quit reading them when the series reached the 20's. Man I was slanging Goosebumps books at my school when I younger lol Jk but that's definitely what come to mind when I think about grade school. We would always read them then sell them to each other for 50 cents - a buck. Then they had those lame spin-offs of Goosebumps, called "Spine Tinglers" and "Shivers". Kids weren't dumb enough to read those knock offs. They ended up at Big Lots within a year.

Have you looked into Grandview? More bang for your buck. Clintonville is pretty cool too. If you're moving from Oakly, I think those areas are the closest match.
January 10, 200916 yr ^ I definitely looked at Grandview. It's too far from my new job, friends/family and where I plan to start my business. Same with Clintonville.
