I thought while I was hanging out at St. Malichi's to take some pictures of the strip along Detroit Avenue.

This is actually a pretty interesting strip.  Its a mix of parking lots, abandoned lots, warehouses, social services and even a small yet hopping gay district.

I was tempted to take pictures of the projects just under the shoreway bridge but I thought better of it.

Here is the Massimo da Milano.  Just an incredible restaurant for its location.  Apparently this used to be a Forest City Trust building.  I was not aware that Forest City used to be a bank.

Still a German Sign here even though it doesn't exist.  That's always perplexed me.

This is the corner store where many residents from the low income housing shop and hang out.

Some abandoned lots right across the street.

A night club

Here a warehouse beautifully restored.  Its used for job assistance I believe.

Here is the Gay bar.  I think its called "Man's World"

There are other stores next to the bar that form a mini shopping district.

Wow, interesting set.  It looks like all of the buildings are well taken care of.  Seems like a cool place.

Nice set.  The restored warehouse you pointed out is apartments, not a job assistance center.

Hi all,

Cleveland's nickname is THE FOREST CITY, like Akron is the Rubber City, Toledo is the Glass City. It has nothing to do with that other company that develops and builds and owns a lot of undeveloped valuable land in the city. Happy New Year to all, warm nuzzles and bear hugz.

The door in the side of the Forest City Trust building used to be an entrance to the station in the subway approach that the streetcars used for the lower deck of the Detroit-Superior (Veterans Memorial) Bridge. In the late seventies, the entrance still had a "Subway" sign above it, and I think the stairs and doorway into the tunnel are still there.

Ohio City is such a cool neighborhood, but so much of its true potential is not yet realized. I drove through there with a friend during Christmas, and I was a little disappointed to see that not much has changed over the years. I hope that, one day, it will become the bustling area it really can be.

Cool set of some great buildings!

These suck.

... and I was a little disappointed to see that not much has changed over the years ...

Depends on how many years you're talking about. Remember, it's Ohio and Ohio is Midwestern. The glaciers receded millennia ago, but change still happens at a glacial pace in the Midwest.

I first saw Ohio City in 1978. Admittedly, some things are just as they were then, but the changes have been significant. Only a handful of brave urban pioneers had undertaken residential restorations, and they were at constant peril of break-ins and vandalism. Admittedly my bf at the time, a Cleveland-area native, was a big sissy, but he was very wary of going into that area after dark.

There are still sketchy areas and problems, but believe me, the overall activity level and appearance of the area are vastly better than they were thirty years ago.

Thanks!

There must be a job assistance on the first floor and apartments above.  I'm positive that the sign said so.

Unless its inaccuarate.

Looks like it's in good condition, except for the urban renewal/parking lots that need to be filled in.

I had a different reaction from my brother, who hadn't been in Ohio City since 2004, and he was really thrilled to see what was happening along W 25th.  He nearly fell off of his barstool at Bar Cento when I told him about the impending addition of apartments to the United Bank Building.

That's possible.  I know the upper stories are apts, and nice ones at that.

One would assume it's called "The Shed" due to the awning which says "The Shed."

IIRC, that used to be called Ohio City Oasis.

^Yes it was - that was an interesting incarnation to say the least. Fyi, the main floor is "The Shed", whereas the basement level is "Man's World" (one of my big pet peeves is when a club tries to pass off a room as another 'club' (Bounce/Union Station, Grid/Orbit, etc.)

Right, right. If your venue is largest enough to actually pull it off, that doesn't bother me.

Thats what chapter 2 (or Chaps)  on Prospect would do.  The front end was a multi leveled bar/lounge.  The rear was a huge dance floor (think the palladium).  On holidays or big events, they would open the hangar door that separated the two and create one massive space.

great tour.

Nope. It is all apartments. The building to the immediate west has Recovery Resources inside it. That might be what you are talking about. I've been inside the larger brick warehouse--there are no offices at all.

I have some historic postcard photos on the OCNW website, so please check this out if you want to see what the Forest City Savings and Trust building once looked like:

Just east of the YMCA.  I don't use prospect so I'm not even sure the building is still there or is in the same configuration as it was in the '90's.

Ah, OK, thanks.  It's hard to tell if any of the buildings there would contain that sort of large space.  Maybe it was something located where the Wolstein center or the transit center is now.

No it was on the south side of prospect.  The smaller bar was closer to prospect and the larger bar was mid block.  However, it was/is a deciptive space as you stepped down into it when they open up the larger dance floor space.  I can't believe none of the older kids remembers this place.  where my old school gays at?  lol
