I'm very pro-conservation, but that seems incredibly unneighborly on the part of Mentor. In addition, just from a practical standpoint, it seems like a weird area to conserve. It's bounded on three sides by freeways and railways, and the other side is a major retail center. There's barely any trees (it was clearly clear cut at some point), I don't see this supporting much in the way of wildlife or anything of that nature.

 

Conserving land is clearly good, but this particular plot would probably have been used for infill development. If I'm being honest, I can't help but wonder if the motivation for this is more NIMBY than conservationist. (Particularly since the development which has taken place thus far is somewhat dense by suburban standards).

 

 

Also having permanently conserved land just beyond your jurisdiction seems to be purely a benefit (at least in this case), the green space could increase the value of the land in your jurisdiction, but you aren't losing out on any potential taxes from developing that land. Plus any spillover development now has to take place in your jurisdiction. This makes more sense as a self-interested move by Mentor than one based in caring for the planet...

Ground is broken for Highland Park. It's only been about thirteen years since the hospital was demolished. What's the rush? I believe this is the Director of Development, Susan Crotty (yes, this position actually exists in Painesville). Anxious to see what transpires🤔

Zapp's Custard & Mustard now open🙌🍨🎊, but to this somewhat mixed review (who are these two?? lol). Watching this was surreal as their journey begins in the little hood where I grew up. Their route is the exact one I took on my walks (and bike rides) downtown back in the day (begin at 1:20 if interested). Glad to see little has changed🤔. Seems P'ville is still patching up the same streets that existed in the same condition sixty years ago--like cracks in a parched desert.

A month+ late, but took a walk on this before it was 'official' and it's a really awesome spot. It's got some cool views of the former Diamond Shamrock site (not that there's anything left of it). I hope there's some Interpretive Signs explaining just what a feat it was to clean the site.

yeah I would like to see that too. I wonder how much of the original brick still exists under the paved surface in the large area on the curve closest to Main St. The westernmost portion nearest Liberty St is still visible. As I recall it was on this stretch that even in the 60's you could still see traces of the interurban tracks (Although I'm certainly not seeing them in this picture. Possibly even these bricks aren't original). Or maybe I'm thinking of North Park Place--

Erie St., almost directly across from the current jail, so it will remain just a hop, skip and a jump from the county courthouse. I don't know anything about the red brick building except I would imagine it must have some historical significance. I remember the corner spot, housing the barber shop, was once a liquor store (I knew someone who lived in an apartment above it); and the restaurant (w/red awning), El Paladar de Mexico, will relocate to the new Lake Erie College dorm (former bank) downtown (although the rough outline of the site from a couple of years ago shown below does not yet include that corner). In fairness, most of this site is sort of a hodgepodge of a few non-descript buildings. I can't recall everything that was there back in the 60's, except for a Ford dealership in a pink Deco-ish (I think) building that stood out. Gradually over the years some homes must have been leveled, but I don't remember it being a tight-knit block of intact houses. Assuming the design is decent, I think this will be a boon to the area, citing the optimism of this quote from the News Herald article:

 

"When asked why the county plans to build the jail on Erie Street, Boyd said that the county has “always been committed to downtown.” He added that it is important for the facility to be near the county courts and that the county has “a significant employee base.”

From the Lake County Sheriff's office, some "conceptual views" of the new jail. I didn't expect this place would look like a concert hall or art museum, but at a price tag of $200+ million, they should come up with something a little more inspired than these

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The U.S. Environmental Protection agency has awarded a $129 million grant to a Cuyahoga County-led partnership to install solar panels on local landfills, mothball a coal-fired power plant and return a major brownfield to natural habitat.

 

The partnership, which includes Cuyahoga County and the cities of Cleveland and Painesville, is one of 25 applicants from across the country chosen by the U.S. to receive a federal Climate Pollution Reduction Grant.

Lake Erie College "Tower" residence now open, rehabilitating a midcentury bank abandoned for a decade. I'm no expert in the architecture and design from this era (my era, as a matter of fact! Lol), but the exterior and much of the interior required a faithful restoration to meet the guidelines of federal and state tax credits. But due to budget considerations I did not realistically expect to see Eames' or Barcelona chairs from Herman Miller in the lobby🫤

I'm not sure it necessarily will be torn down. My understanding there is a reuse plan for the plant to house the battery storage part of the solar grid to be able to provide energy during peak hours if the solar array isn't able to meet the demand. 

 

I don't know what exactly that will look like though--smoke stacks coming down or a new build here all together?

 

Also, the remediation coming to the Diamond Shamrock site will likely more than make up for any loss of this power plant.

The grant application was submitted by Cuyahoga County, supported by the cities of Cleveland and Painesville.

A bit more detail specific to the projects specific to the Painesville portion of the USEPA grant. The coal plant will remain to house the city's switchgear, I'm not sure if that includes battery storage or not but I've heard that will be housed at the power plant as well. The employees of the plant will also receive training to be able to work the solar facilities. There is also a bit more detail on West Creek's involvement to rehabilitate the site, though I also believe the final site plans are still being developed and we could see more news coming from this site.

Lake Erie Bilingual Academy, a preK-5 charter school, has opened in the old St. Mary Catholic school. Operated by ACCEL (one of those "evil" charter school organizations😡), which has about 80 locations in Ohio, this will be their third bilingual (English/Spanish) school (the other two are in Columbus and Lorain)

I can't comment on how underpaid (or not) the teachers are (or for charter school teachers generally), but there are reasons charter schools continue to be in demand, as this footnote from the Wikipedia article indicates:

New site for planned skatepark. Not the best neighborhood (okay, that can be said of any part of town lol), next to the soon-to-be defunct power plant. Maybe this can be incorporated into the design 🥴

 

 

This funding is for the former Sidley Casement Golf Club golf course, a 67-acre property situated along 0.75 miles of the Grand River just northeast of Painesville. This project is totally independent from the Diamond Shamrock project that received the US EPA grant funding a few months ago, though it is only a mile or so up-river from that project. 

 

The Sidley Casement property is outlined in red, a southern project area of the Diamond Shamrock project is outlined in orange.

The projects range from wetland restoration to enriching stream corridor forested areas. From the August 2, 2024 Painesville City Council meeting agenda;

 

West Creek Conservancy’s proposed conservation and restoration of this site will have environmental, social and economic benefits for the City of Painesville and the surrounding community. While the landscape has been severely modified to accommodate the former use of the property as a golf course, this project will restore natural habitat including riparian and upland forest, wetlands, native meadow, and vernal pools that will improve floodplain functionality within the project area. This will have tremendous benefits to the water quality of the Grand River and downstream in Lake Erie, while also improving onsite habitat for the benefit of many native wildlife species.

 

Eventually, once the restoration is complete, the City of Painesville will partner with West Creek Conservancy in implementing passive park infrastructure improvements on the property to facilitate the use of the site as a riverfront nature preserve, with fishing access to the Grand River. This will support the goals of Painesville City Council’s most recently adopted Strategic Plan, including specifically the goal of maintaining and improving amenities including our parks and public lands to improve the quality of life and growth of our community.  Staff has also talked with West Creek Conservancy about exploring opportunities to take long-term ownership of the Grand River Casement Preserve following West Creek Conservancy’s successful conservation of the property, integrating it into the series of riverfront parks and recreational river access points currently managed by the City’s Public Lands and Recreation Department. The City has discussed working with West Creek Conservancy to apply for grant funding to connect this area to Recreation Park via a bridge over the Grand River.

Fixing bad links

^thanks. I used to walk along the cliffs on the western portion of the Grand River which begin on the northern side of Recreation Park, as shown in picture. The narrow shale strip was still walkable back then. I don't know if it's eroded now to the point that it's no longer possible, but the river is so shallow at this section I guess it wouldn't be a disaster if you slipped and fell in. (I had to look up the term "vernal pools," although I remembered "riparian" from a Britcom years ago lol)

The new (or should I say newest?) Lake East Hospital site plan. Coming first will be two model homes as Phase 1. My guess is they won't move on to the next phase until they can convince someone to pay $300K+ for a new home in downtown Painesville 🥴

 

 

 

 

 

The Ranch home on E South St looks mostly complete, and you can just see they are setting the foundation for the neighboring house to the right.

The "Speaking of Painesville Newsletter Fall 2024" didn't mention this project or the amphitheater.  The summer newsletter stated the project was aiming for groundbreaking back in June, but there is currently no construction fence or equipment on site since they finished removing all the trees and vegetation months ago.

yeah, I'm always afraid some of these projects aren't going to happen when there are extensive delays (especially in Painesville). I guess it could be anything. I see that Marous, the developer, has lots of projects in the pipeline so they appear to be very busy. Just thinking of possible excuses reasons lol

yeah, so much has been leveled. Of course this hasn't prevented people from weighing in on this project. Some facebook comments 😂:

 

"Why do we need a new jail for criminals. Who cares what their space is like. When I did my one time in jail at 18 cuz I was an idiot, I deserved everything I got. I bet people would think twice about committing crimes if they got charged for their stay too. And held to paying it off."

 

"Anyone know how much the county jail pays the contracted barber for inmates haircuts? Per person/per cut? I've heard it's a ridiculous amount. Why? Here's another view of the site, with the current jail lower right. The light blue line on the upper left is Nebraska St. where I lived when I was 4 years old. It's really the hood. If anything I hope it's improved if ever so slightly over the past 60 years 🤔
