It seems that real estate developers are even taking aim at tiny Fairport Harbor (why should only big cities be subjected to their avarice?) Two quirky, independent stores--The Gravel Pit and The Roost—specializing in gift items, furniture, clothing, etc., have announced they will soon close due to a new owner (Zach Weaver) who has acquired the building they occupy, respectively raising the rent to the point of unaffordability, or just wanting one to vacate. These are the types of businesses that have revived Fairport to the degree that's made it more of a destination for day-tripping tourists, even in colder weather. December 31, 2024Dec 31 I know what everyone is saying (Ethan's second comment on target). Mentor has been a destination for shopping and all kinds of industry for a long time, starting when it boomed in the 60's and 70's when I was growing up. So I was just being a little facetious. It was just startling to me that a city that was once 51K and has been roughly 47K for ages would have that many new businesses in only one year. http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/

February 15Feb 15 This grant would have created a large public park on land that is currently a brownfield site that could have included the longest lakefront trail along the Great Lakes. It would also close a coal-fired power plant and create a solar field and battery storage facility, using some of the funds for job training for the power plant employees so they could continue to work on the new solar field. Without this grant the land will likely lay fallow. There is no plan here. It's just reaction against what President Biden did because it was President Biden who did it. Trump freezes $129M climate grant meant for Painesville, Cuyahoga County and Cleveland Published: Feb. 14, 2025 By Sean McDonnell, cleveland.com CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Trump administration has frozen a $129 million federal grant that Cuyahoga County, Cleveland and Painesville had won last year, under the Biden administration, to fight climate change. President Donald Trump has also frozen a $156 million Solar for All grant that was won by a coalition led by Cleveland nonprofit Growth Opportunity Partners. That money was earmarked for 30 communities across eight states, including Cleveland and Cuyahoga County. ... Under the grant, Cuyahoga County was supposed to receive about $30 million, Cleveland would receive $20 million and the City of Painesville would receive $80 million in grant funding. https://www.cleveland.com/news/2025/02/trump-freezes-129m-climate-grant-meant-for-cuyahoga-county-cleveland.html

My understanding is that alternate funding sources will be necessary, and maybe that means a much smaller scope that just includes enough land for a trail along the lake.

That project is set to include 78 market-rate apartments, 60,000 square feet of office space and a couple of restaurants." The new Lake County Jail "Lake County Safety Center" will have 504 beds on three and a half floors and "be completed in mid-2027." Painesville is moving forward with the "plans to build a 35 megawatt solar facility and a 10 megawatt battery storage facility" to allow the city to close its coal fired power plant, now that the $80 million federal grant that was frozen has been released. Looks like 2027 will be a good year for the city You're way ahead of me with all this info! lol I watched the city council meeting when Marous announced that the Grand River Walk project was being scaled back and I detected that council members seemed ever so slightly miffed that this was happening (even though I'm sure they were well aware this was coming). Also a bit disappointed that the amphitheater wasn't a bit bigger. I wasn't expecting the Hollywood Bowl, but maybe just under a thousand seats would have been nice. The fact that it's located just below (and more or less integrated into) the Grand River Walk, where people will be forced to listen to whatever "music" is being performed, probably was a factor in the decision. Don't know if there will be any lawn seating. And I don't understand how this is costing over $2M! It must be the "mystic blue metal accents" 😅 Some more info-- http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/

March 29Mar 29 If you happen to be driving through Perry Village, I’m doing all the architectural and design work on the former village hall and police department. As well as creating a lot of the custom accents.

I call this Caribbavarian Craftsman style. You’ll see it once more details are added. Here’s a mockup I built for the owner. All the trim/facia/etc. will be painted dark bronze. The windows dark bronze with vertical muntin bars on the upper sash. And all the 1st floor windows will get Bahamian style awnings.

This was actually the village fire engine house. It was built in 1927. Perry Village butchered these buildings in a late 90’s renovation, removing basically all historical accents. The new version is gonna be fantastic. The history of this complex and old Perry Village is almost worthy of a @KJP article. My favorite part of Ken’s articles are the past historical backstory. Literally no one else, anywhere, does that.
