The first phase of Lake Metroparks Lakefront Trail is now open. When completed, it will link Painesville Township Park with Fairport Harbor at a distance of 2.5 miles--

If you happen to be driving through Perry Village, I’m doing all the architectural and design work on the former village hall and police department. As well as creating a lot of the custom accents.

just a few pictures of recent progress of the Painesville Railroad Museum (formerly the old train depot--1893). They don't have much of a budget and don't know when it officially opens, but it looks good--

Did the construction project Lake Erie College planned for the old Harvey high school lot ever start? I am not able to swing that way often, but I haven't heard anything for quite a long time.

Anyone know where some renders of it could be found?

no, and I'm not even sure Lake Erie has even acquired that property yet. I think they are planning more dorms for that site, no? I don't think the immediate neighbors are too happy about that, but the high school was there for almost ninety years (although those kids went home for the day--lol). Maybe you know more about this than I do. Also, I think there was once a cemetery on that site before the school was built.

Close enough....

Just an FYI, Newcom's Tavern in Dayton was built in 1796, two years prior to Unionville Tavern.  Unless they mean "(formerly) still in use?"

Instead of temporary lights, new Victorian-style chandeliers will light up original hardwood beams at this 1893 station. Instead of boards and stained plexiglass, new acrylic will reveal the evening light through a massive bay window."

Why demo?  It looks like a nice building.  Seems to be in good shape too.

Damaged by fire, per the article. Either the owner didn't want to rebuild, didn't have fire insurance or the county gave him an he couldn't refuse.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

this is disgusting. In recent years this was regarded as a historic building worth preserving. It became the location of a popular casual restaurant and a place where various community organizations met, mainly a senior citizens center, but suffered a severe fire a few years ago from which it was never completely restored. The county purchased it for practically nothing, and wanted it to expand and consolidate government services, which are located in a former Cleveland Trust Bank building nearby. In the 60's the structure was a Sears store (back when is was still Sears, Roebuck & Co.!), the interior of which looked like something from the Depression well into the 60's when it closed and downtown was being drained of retail as a result of changing demographics in Mentor. We shopped a lot there because we couldn't afford fancy Carlisle's (aka Carlisle-Allen Co) across the park--lol. I found this video of a Memorial Day Parade in 1929 (I posted this ages ago) in which you can see a brief one second glimpse of the building at 2:01--when it was practically new! (and when downtown was a lively place!--well before even my time :-()

The Lake County commissioners approved a bid to remove asbestos from the building ahead of its demolition in June.

I just read that the process of demolition for this building has begun; but it was good to see that another one (one of the few remaining 19th Century properties downtown that miraculously was not torn down) is in the midst of renovation. I remember a drug store with a tin ceiling here back in old days. Looks good though--

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

I'm desperately trying to find a drawing of the proposed new building and can't. Hopefully it won't be too awful. For comic relief, here are some articles from over fifty years ago (I was in elementary school, okay?) about the grand (grandiose) plan to re-do downtown. It was a last ditch attempt to reverse its inevitable decline. The worst part of it of course was the demolition of so many historic buildings that erased much of its character, which is why this most recent example is so sad--

Dale Helsel, the city manager at the time (I don't know why he's identified as Pres. of city council here. I always loved to blame him for this fiasco, but I didn't understand until much later he really only acts at the behest of the city council. I think), had a Yale and Berkeley education. This is proof that even the most elite credentials are no guarantee of competence--lol (his son was in my class in school) By high school, they had moved on to another town--I think Hamilton, OH, as asst city mgr--so he didn't have to face the consequences of an embittered public when it was obvious this scheme had failed badly

here's a good idea: let's turn those abandoned mall department stores into "entertainment venues," which, based on the Round1 Entertainment website (Bowling & Amusement :|), will probably not be featuring chamber music or cutting-edge theater--

Entertainment venue coming to Great Lakes Mall in Mentor

http://www.news-herald.com/business/20170710/entertainment-venue-coming-to-great-lakes-mall-in-mentor?source=topstoriesrot

Round 1, a fast-growing family entertainment concept, is coming to Mentor’s Great Lakes Mall, according to a news release from Washington Prime Group Inc., a real estate trust investment group.

It’s part of an approximately $15 million project , according to the release.

In addition to Round 1, WPG is in discussions with new tenants for a restaurant space that will be created adjacent to Round 1. The high-visibility anchor space was previously occupied by a Dillard’s Men’s Store. Dillard’s made the decision earlier this year to consolidate its department stores at Great Lakes Mall into a single renovated anchor space. In addition, a redeveloped outparcel will provide an opportunity to add a second new restaurant to this project.

I guess the nicest thing I can say about this is that the new building doesn't look as bad as I had expected. Still it probably could have been located somewhere else nearby and prevented the demolition of a beautiful old structure with an intimate scale more appropriate to this spot, right next to a historic church (1878) that's on the National Register--

In an ongoing effort, the all-volunteer Fairport Harbor Historical Society, which maintains the Fairport Harbor Marine Museum and Lighthouse at 129 Second St., is working to support a restoration project on the tower and keeper’s house, according to museum trustee and Fairport Harbor Village Councilman Tony Bertone, who oversees the buildings and grounds operation at the museum.

“It’s masonry and it’s about 150 years old,” Bertone said in an Aug. 4 phone interview. “So the masonry needs attention from time to time."

Taste of Painesville will take place tomorrow from 5-10pm, although not in the park (as in the last couple of years), but on Main St. between St. Clair and State St. It's really not as lame as this video suggests. Okay, maybe it is, but it's a way to kill some time :| Is it supposed to rain?

I can't watch the video right now.  The important question:  will there be authentic tacos?

I can't watch the video right now.  The important question:  will there be authentic tacos?

you know, I really don't know. They used to post a detailed list of all the food vendors--only about 15 of them--but I haven't seen it this yet year. I'm sure they must occasionally have one of the local taquerias on the roster (since that's one thing Painesville is known for, one would think they would!). Maybe later they'll provide more information.

I should just make the trip out there to get some tacos at La Mexicana.  My Lake Co. friends have been raving about them.  Maybe I can take a day long excursion with the misses and visit some wineries while we are at it.

I checked and I don't think there will be tacos at Taste of P'ville. I don't know how they came up with this batch of places -- http://www.news-herald.com/general-news/20170902/taste-of-painesville-slated-for-sept-7

La Mexicana is good and you also might want to try La Casita, which gets rave reviews. It's outdoors and I think just through the warm weather though. Don't know if your friends are familiar with it -- https://www.facebook.com/pages/La-Casita/136480659819100?nr

Ok, I get that these things have to draw from around the area (not just Painesville), but how do you not have a taco place there? Also, no Brennan's Fish House representation? That's just criminal.

Tell me more about this Brennan's Fish house please.

It's next to Pickle Bills on the Grand River. As the name implies, heavy focus on fish, crab, etc. I go there on occasion for lunch meetings when I'm in Lake County. The preferred fish spot for the Lake county old guard. Great fried perch. Not much in the way of ambiance. It's like Pickle Bills without all of the TGIFriday's nautical nonsense....and the food is good.

Pickle Bill's without the flair.  I'll have to check it out sometime.

this is my favorite part (environmental hazards?? It was a bank!):

"As a part of a United States Environmental Protection Agency grant that Painesville received, the city was able to conduct environmental and hazardous substance assessments.

Bieterman said this grant was instrumental in redevelopment.

“It gave them (113 Main LLC) comfort that there were no major environmental hazards,” she said.“We’re really excited about this opportunity.”

what the hell is this all about? As far as I know Steve LaTourette had his office in the same spot for his entire time in Congress and I think (I'm probably wrong) that what's-his-name, J. William Stanton, in the 60's, was based in Painesville. I'm sure this has nothing to do with the numerous immigrant rights and DACA demonstrations that have taken place outside his office in recent months ::) The new Mentor address sounds like it's hidden away somewhere in a corporate office park far removed from easy public access. Good riddance--lol
