I don't think the immediate neighbors are too happy about that, but the high school was there for almost ninety years (although those kids went home for the day--lol). May 11, 20178 yr this is disgusting. In recent years this was regarded as a historic building worth preserving. It became the location of a popular casual restaurant and a place where various community organizations met, mainly a senior citizens center, but suffered a severe fire a few years ago from which it was never completely restored. The county purchased it for practically nothing, and wanted it to expand and consolidate government services, which are located in a former Cleveland Trust Bank building nearby. In the 60's the structure was a Sears store (back when is was still Sears, Roebuck & Co.!), the interior of which looked like something from the Depression well into the 60's when it closed and downtown was being drained of retail as a result of changing demographics in Mentor. We shopped a lot there because we couldn't afford fancy Carlisle's (aka Carlisle-Allen Co) across the park--lol. I found this video of a Memorial Day Parade in 1929 (I posted this ages ago) in which you can see a brief one second glimpse of the building at 2:01--when it was practically new! June 22, 20177 yr I'm desperately trying to find a drawing of the proposed new building and can't. Hopefully it won't be too awful. For comic relief, here are some articles from over fifty years ago (I was in elementary school, okay?) about the grand (grandiose) plan to re-do downtown. It was a last ditch attempt to reverse its inevitable decline. The worst part of it of course was the demolition of so many historic buildings that erased much of its character, which is why this most recent example is so sad-- my favorite quote: "Eventually a ghost town atmosphere can develop." ha ha...no kidding :laugh: I'm not sure what Robert Jenks did, but he lived in a big house behind a brick-walled compound (containing a couple of other homes), back when there were still a few wealthy people still left in Painesville Dale Helsel, the city manager at the time (I don't know why he's identified as Pres. of city council here. I always loved to blame him for this fiasco, but I didn't understand until much later he really only acts at the behest of the city council. I think), had a Yale and Berkeley education. This is proof that even the most elite credentials are no guarantee of competence--lol (his son was in my class in school) By high school, they had moved on to another town--I think Hamilton, OH, as asst city mgr--so he didn't have to face the consequences of an embittered public when it was obvious this scheme had failed badly http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/

September 7, 20177 yr It's next to Pickle Bills on the Grand River. As the name implies, heavy focus on fish, crab, etc. I go there on occasion for lunch meetings when I'm in Lake County. The preferred fish spot for the Lake county old guard. Great fried perch. Not much in the way of ambiance. It's like Pickle Bills without all of the TGIFriday's nautical nonsense....and the food is good.
