Nerdtastic moment here: Technically polystyrene is amorphous and thus does not "melt", it only flows. Okay, enough nerddom.

I'm catholic, but I never understood the need to have giant Jesus statues and crosses (like the one in Effingham, IL). I find it pretty hilarious that this got struck down......

How about if they're in Brazil? I find the Rio Jesus to be pretty cool. Rio Jesus and Touchdown Jesus rule. All other Jesus statues should be struck down by lighting.

Maybe they'll used a little less flammable material in the resurrection.

This burned down tonight. Lightning struck it. I had no idea it was made of Styrofoam.

I am an awe you resurrected this thread

I heard they're using insurance money to rebuild.....

But giant statues of Mary are A-OK... :)

Not by me they aren't. I believe that you live your religion through how you live your life, not how long you spend praying to statues in a church. But that philosophical discussion is for the religion thread......

Catholics do not pray to statues.  They ask for intercession.  Let's not get the Protestants any more confused than they already are.

This is not a good omen.

I wonder if the new one is going to be unveiled on Easter by rolling a big fiberglass rock out of the way.

LMAO!  You're going to hell for that!

The steel skeleton reminds me of the burning man structure.

This incident, in a nutshell, manifests how/why Christianity is wrong.

Reminds me of the religious seperatists who established a Religious Utopian community (a la New Harmony, IN) along the ohio river, only to have their town destroyed & everyone perish in a mass flood..............

God does exisit, but God is not human. God transcends humanity. God is Life, in all its unique forms.

Sturdier Jesus statue planned

Cincinnati-area church to redesign sculpture destroyed by lightning

Published on Sunday, Jul 11, 2010

Tentative plans call for the statue to be made of limestone, instead of the combustible wood and plastic foam-frame that supported the old structure outside the Solid Rock Church, about 20 miles north of Cincinnati.

The new monument also will depict Jesus' full body, instead of just a bust. The statue's feet will be on top of water, and Jesus' hands will be outstretched, similar to the iconic ''Christ the Redeemer'' statue that overlooks Rio de Janeiro.

So he's walking on water now, eh?

LMAO!!

Credit where credit is due- if it's made of limestone, I can at least consider it a "real" statue.

^ Yep, Ill have a lot more respect for it if it's made out of limestone.  If they can pull it off, aesthetically, to make it appear as if it's really floating atop the water, it could be quite beautiful.

Not quite as iconic a location as Christ the Redeemer, but close.

^----"plans call for the statue to be made of limestone..."

Well, they do call it Solid Rock Church.  :-D

This is blasphemy!  Has anyone attended a service at this "church"?

Nope, but I've been to other big box Christian churches.  Not my cup of tea.

New Jesus statue will smite lightning

Tuesday, November 2, 2010

The new statue will depict Jesus' arms reaching forward as though to embrace his followers.  The statue is expected to be completed by the spring or early summer of 2011.

Steve Brauch of Glasshand LLC and Tom Tsuchiya were chosen to design and sculpt the new statue, which will depict Jesus' full body, The JournalNews of Hamilton reported.

The 51-foot-tall statue will stand on 11 feet of boulders and rocks with water flowing out of the rock into a reflecting pool. It will have a steel substructure with a lightning-suppression system and urethane foam that won't ignite if hit by lightning.

....Urethane Foam Lord....

Driving to Dayton just hasn't been the same these last few months.

So when this version gets taken out by a tornado do you think they will get the hint?

^ Are you kidding?  It will take a tornado, an earthquake, a hailstorm, lightning, and a swarm of locusts for them to get the hint.

Nothing says celebrating the greatness of God's creation like urethane foam....

....a monument built to last dozens of years.

How are they gonna clean the bird sh!t off of urethane foam?

What happened to limestone?

God has a place for those who ask such questions.

The quarry?

The quarry?

Heathen!  Keep it up and you'll end up like Lot's wife!

or, 4th and Long Jesus

^That sure is... something.

Wonder what Zeus has to say about this.

Really enjoyed this photo shown in today's Columbus Dispatch.  Also the caption to the photo, which said some people are referring to it as "The Hugging Jesus". :-)

EDIT: I was a bit off on what the caption said.  Apparently, it is "The Hug Me Jesus"!

I like to picture Jesus in a tuxedo T-shirt. 'Cause it says like, I wanna be formal but I’m here to party too. I like to party, so I like my Jesus to party.

I gotta say I miss Big Butter Jesus. Just isn't the same...

All it needs now is some apes on horseback riding around and Charleton Heston in a loin cloth pounding the ground and cursing.

I took a drive up there today just to look at it.

-It doesn't have the overall impact of the old one

-It oddly lurches forward

-The color is so neutral that it doesn't stand out so much

-The nearby power lines seem more distracting than before

-It's not lit well, at least not yet.

It does look to me like there's some risk of it doing a face plant into the pond.

What gets me is how cheap these statues both look.  Clearly the sculptor didn't waste any time with looking at a human form, or how fabric drapes over a body (are those sleeves inflated like balloons?), or anythings else but the head, which is highly detailed.  Incongruously highly detailed.  It would have been better if they'd left the head as ill defined as the rest, and made it sort of abstract.  Especially if they'd done it in some sort of consistent style.

Oh, and fill in that seam, for Christ's sake!  He was crucified, not cut in half by a magician.

so jesus is down with the bro hug!

Lord have mercy.

It does kinda look like he's wearing a sweater under his toga.
