January 17, 200916 yr That camera is in good hands. The image stabilizer is a very useful feature on a long lens; it makes it possible to hand-hold shots that used to require a tripod; excellent choice.

January 18, 200916 yr ^they are pretty rugged... I'm not saying you would want to drop it 3 or 4 feet but they are pretty sturdy. They are great cameras and if you are thinking about getting one, I'd say go for it.

The only thing that sucks about getting a new camera is that you feel the need to go back and redo all the shots and places you went to before because your pictures are now far better. I wouldn't worry about these getting damaged to easily. They tend to hold up pretty well to getting knocked into concrete compared to point and shoots. For an expensive camera, they better hold up. There were some tests done that the Rebels and Nikons held up wonderfully when dropped from a second story window onto concrete. No damage except for maybe a nick or scratch, and no mechanical malfunctions. Still, avoid having this happen lol. Excellent pick MayDay.

Plus, once you start buying lenses, you need to buy lighting, and a tri pod, etc. My nephew has a camera similar to MayDay's other camera and its heavy and with all the accessories it's too much!

That lens has a nice, wide range that works well in a lot of situations, and the built-in image stabilization conteracts the effects of vibration or camera shake when you're working at long focal lengths. Also, the image stabilization lets you shoot in lower light, using slower shutter speeds, than might be the case with non-stabilized lenses. If you're going to do night photography, of course, a tripod is always a nice thing to have around. The prices have become more affordable on compact ones that don't weigh a ton, and there are pocket-sized ones that can be set up on a railing or post or other flat, stable surface. For a day of street photography, you don't need anything more than the camera and a good zoom, and maybe an unobtrusive backpack to stash it in when you're going into forbidden territory. I prefer not to carry anything that's conspicuously a camera bag, because I think those things fairly shout "Steal me!" to experienced, knowledgeable thieves.

I just see the stuff my nephew has accumulated. the folding lights, the lenses, its too much stuff for someone like me. I want to point and shot and put it back in my pocket.
January 18, 200916 yr ^^I did buy a Canon gadget bag for down the road when I have more equipment but I'll only take that out for photo gigs. I'm lucky that this new camera and lense fit into my older camera bag. The lense is pretty well built - obviously I've only had it for a few days but it seems alright. Part of my motivation was that Amazon offered $100 off if you bought the XSi with that specific lense - most of the reviews were positive and I figured it was about time to upgrade. It's nicer than the canon software that comes with it. That was a damn good deal you got from amazon. I would love to get that lens but I don't want to pay 700 bucks for it lol. And it looks pretty good for full auto. My xti is a lot like the new ones and I have so much fun with it. All I can say is have fun. :-)

I'm still in that phase, almost two years later (Nikon D3 versus D70), although I'm not saying much against the film-body Nikon N80. I still have not gone through my older photos for retouching, sans some from Waverly Hills TB Hospital that were taken with my second digital -- a Nikon Coolpix 4500 (has the tilt feature).

January 19, 200916 yr This may sound strange, but I forgot how beautiful the winter snow can be. Those photos are nothing short of sensational. Well done!!! I bought a new camera in October, but wanted a super compact, high pixel count, easy to operate camera. I got a Canon and am pretty happy. The pictures are quite good, but NOTHING like the ones you posted. Time to upgrade already!
