Posted January 24, 200916 yr another snowy JC thread. this time the transformed jersey city, nj waterfront. Hudson-bergen lightrail http://www.mylightrail.com/index.php?option=com_hblr&task=stations&Itemid=90 Harborside financial center station exchange place station is the downtown of the waterfront neighborhood nearby is the exchange place path train station http://www.panynj.gov/CommutingTravel/path/html/map.html Some excellent waterfront views – here’s midtown downtown is right across the river here verrazano bridge to the south It’s hard to peel your eyes off manhattan, but here is a look back at JC The exchange place centre on the right does some Chicago-style cheating to gain height, it’s first floors are a parking garage The statue commemorates the katyn massacre, that's where the russkies murdered 22k poles in WW2 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katyn_massacre The one on the right is pelli’s 30 hudson aka the goldman sachs tower (781ft) It’s the tallest building in nj & also the tallest in the usa not built in a metro’s largest city Nice street view over the river I love this old one downtown Nice church Post office the N-S running warren street has a wonderful surprize view at the south end Yes, JC has many brownstone blocks too Busy marina miss ellis is taking a well-earned coffee break two downtowns....one shot liberty state park views Love this one! This plaque in the park tells about the former morris canal. more from wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morris_Canal the former canal is just an inlet now, it’s blocked off next to the park here, this is a couple blocks west of the hudson river factoid – the morris canal once ran thru to newark & the canal bed is now the newark subway line. It was almost turned into a busway during the 'transit holocaust' era, but that never happened because it would have cost too much $$$ to concrete up the canal bed. The old colgate clock sign is at the morris canal inlet Looking south at ellis island and the statue of liberty Looking back on the park Finally heading over to a lightrail train station to take a ride *** stay tuned for bayonne, nj ***
January 24, 200916 yr ^ much better than a snowy mlk holiday weekend sunday - ha. but really not all that great on a typical workday either. there is nowhere to go to eat or anything yet or to do anything after work. also, there are a lot of open lots to walk by if you do go anywhere. the nearby marina area homes/apts makes that section feel much more livable than those residential towers.
January 24, 200916 yr Good to see this :) I have relatives that live in Jersey City (and Bayonne, and Palisades Park), so this is familiar territory. I'm surprised at how fast Jersey City has built up ... especially in the past 10 years. My relatives lived in one of the older sections of the city, near Journal Square, although that is fast becoming a revitalized joint. The riverfront and development there... is totally unrecognizable from my childhood. I can't wait for Bayonne! Active downtown, although more middle class.
January 24, 200916 yr Man, awesome thread. I really wish I checked out those places when I lived in NJ. I LOVE the views of Manhattan from the Turnpike at the end of I-78. It's kind of close to Jerz City. Another interesting factoid about the Morris canal: It went through the town I used to live in (Washington) and my elementary school was built on a former major basin and port for the canal.
January 25, 200916 yr It is amazing how built up JC is just from the last time I was there. Trying to keep up with the Jones' across the river I guess.
