January 28, 200916 yr Dang. Even if they did that here, my business would be open. They just don't close.
January 28, 200916 yr Dang. Even if they did that here, my business would be open. They just don't close. Mine doesn't close either, even with the mayor asking for a phased evacuation
January 29, 200916 yr Dang. Even if they did that here, my business would be open. They just don't close. My company does not close, it only encourages the use of "Approved Time Off" which is our bag of sick days and holidays. To be fair, back in the wind storm we didn't lose power, and the roads to it are all major county roads, so it really hasn't had the need to shut down.
January 29, 200916 yr Level 3 emergency means only emergency personnel are allowed on the roads. The Enquirer ran a story on this today. A sheriff pulled over a METRO bus of all things, but he let it go and gave up because there is really no way to stop people from going out and traveling -- for food, gas or leisure. Times have changed in 50 years; vehicles can safely travel on snow and ice given that you are comfortable driving in such conditions, and are well equipped and/or prepared for the drive. I didn't even know about the Level 3 until this afternoon. I was out in the storm yesterday and today for much of the day shooting photographs, and had NO problem driving. 50-60 MPH on the interstate, never got bogged down in snow on steep grades (sans once in Mt. Adams today, after I pulled into the shoulder to park), and was prepared with a shovel and a brush... along with jumpers and a first-aid kit. Of course, I love driving in this weather, and have a lot of experience with it. Level 3? Kiss my ass.
January 29, 200916 yr People are pansies anymore. This wouldn't have been an "emergency" at all even a few years ago. edit: added quotation marks.
January 29, 200916 yr Not sure when the last time this area had a level 3 alert. Cincinnati got pounded with snow and ice. Seems like half the country did I just went for a run outside in shorts. It's in the mid 50s right now here in Atlanta...although it is kind of gray.
January 29, 200916 yr People are pansies anymore. This wouldn't have been an "emergency" at all even a few years ago. edit: added quotation marks. I think the real danger is hills. I was dumb enough to drive during a snow emergency about 4 years ago in Cincinnati. I went down the Glenway hill in Cincinnati and smashed into another car. My brakes wouldn't work because it was pure ice on the ground. The top of the hill had a lot of traction and was semi-cleared but not the steep incline. I hate driving on steep hills after that.
January 29, 200916 yr what's snow? I got yer snow right here, smart guy.... (some photos from the top floor of my building in Lakewood) The water temp was 85... Note the snow piled up against the sliding door to the sun deck.... You can get a "snow tan" on these.... Look at the snow piled up outside the windows of our 7th floor party room! Those drifts are several feet high... That's Clifton Boulevard down below and the Gold Coast high rises several blocks away on Lake Erie's shoreline... The snow was letting up at this point so you could see the 30-story Winton Place in the background... That's all for this storm! Cleveland is near to breaking the record for the snowiest January on record. January 1978 was the snowiest with 42 inches. I remember two storms from that month, the great blizzard of Jan. 26 and a heavy snow four days earlier. It was a Sunday night and I went to see Kiss at the old Richfield Coliseum, my first rock concert. The weather was horrible but the concert was awesome! January 29, 200916 yr KJP thats your pad? That place looks awesome. Does the party room get used a lot? People playing cards? Looks like an awesome view.
January 29, 200916 yr KJP thats your pad? That place looks awesome. Does the party room get used a lot? People playing cards? Looks like an awesome view. I was just going to say, it looks like you have a nice place, with nice amenities. I think my area also came close to breaking the record for January. I'm so sick of snow.
January 29, 200916 yr Those are the common spaces in my building. Residents can rent the party room (we used to let residents use it for free but some took advantage of that and abused/ruined it for the rest of us). I've held birthday parties in there, which has a full kitchen. The view at night of the Gold Coast from there is beautiful. But you can use the pool anytime you want. You've seen pictures of my actual condo after I renovated it (see the two groupings of pictures at My Cleveland Rehab http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,13282.30.html). January 29, 200916 yr This is what the views from my building look like a night... Looking east toward downtown Cleveland: Looking north toward the Gold Coast: What this has to do with a snowstorm I have no idea.... Sorry for the deviation! You have a sweet condo you could easily impress women with :wink2: . "You have to come over to my place some time so I can show you the wonderful view of the gold coast at night from the 7th floor :wink2:  " She'll be up there like "aww this is so romanntiic!" lol
January 29, 200916 yr Seriously, that is an awesome place. That is perfect for one person. Gorgeous views as well.
January 29, 200916 yr Not sure when the last time this area had a level 3 alert. Cincinnati got pounded with snow and ice. Seems like half the country did We were supposed to get something here in Taxachusetts, but it turned out to be pretty weak. Around here at least, "snow emergency" means parking restrictions, and they will declare said emergency based on weather predictions and start towing cars before it's even much of a problem. But my street is safe from those restrictions, and I almost never need to drive anywhere, so I was disappointed by the lame amount of snow/ice!
January 29, 200916 yr Not sure when the last time this area had a level 3 alert. Cincinnati got pounded with snow and ice. Last Spring on the opening night of Bockfest.
January 29, 200916 yr Every now and then we get smacked, but most of the "OMG! OMG! OMG!" forecasts never materialize. The memory of the blizzard of '78 lives on, though, passed on to a second generation. As soon as the weather forecasters mention snow, hordes of people swarm the supermarkets and purge them of milk, bread, toilet paper, beer, and Cheetos. I think there's a secret deal between the supermarket chains and the TV stations.
January 29, 200916 yr The snow storm was a bunch of BS. I drove illegally over 100 miles yesterday within Hamilton County and city of Cincinnati in my tiny Honda Civic during the quote-unquote emergency. After successfully getting to my day gig from farther than anyone else, nobody else was there so I drove home, and was out over $100. Then I got called in to deliver some pizzas since other drivers were wimping out, and made $220 from 4pm till 2am. I drove past countless schools countless times that were called off yesterday AND today. I never got stuck. Drove all the big hills in Cincinnati -- Milton, Sycamore, Dorchester, Ravine, Vine, Straight, MLK, Dixmyth, etc. with no problems. The only one I had to retreat on was the ridiculously steep Morrisson coming up from Lowell, which is perhaps the steepest street in town, and hadn't been plowed, and I only attempted to climb it because my car up until that point had The thing about it is when you're delivering pizzas in "bad" weather, you're delivering to people who are watching the weather and traffic on TV. I'd tell them it's not really bad out there, and they'd follow up with "oh, no, it's horrible!". Did you just hear what I said? Do you know what I've been doing all day? I mean I drove 30 miles into Butler County in the middle of it during the day, and had been delivering pizzas since 4 in the afternoon, over roads that are supposedly impassable. Apparently someone whose just been driving for hours doesn't know about the conditions as much as someone who's been watching TV.

Apparently someone whose just been driving for hours doesn't know about the conditions as much as someone who's been watching TV. I admire your hustle. The best time to work is when no one else wants to. I used to take on third shifts and while everyone was sleeping, I was out making overtime pay! Everyone called off in the factory because they didn't want to drive in the snow - God forbid. Sorry, I'd rather take the risk and get paid. I don't even pay attention to the weather anymore. People act like it's some giant natural disaster - the white death descending upon us. Screw that - I work to get paid. The only thing I avoid are steep hills but that's not even an issue in Columbus and people here act like the snow is Armageddon. Do people usually tip more on snow days - for the driver's trouble? If they don't, I think I'd be tempted to accidentally slip on their icy sidewalk and get my money through homeowners insurance
January 30, 200916 yr JMeck- totally agreed on your pizza delivery driving experiences. I did it for several years, and snowstorms are good for the pizza delivery business. You get pretty inured to driving in bad weather that most wouldn't think about going out into. Of course, those people have no problem sending out others to drive in it!
January 30, 200916 yr >and hadn't been plowed, and I only attempted to climb it because my car up until that point had Sorry about that sentence getting cut off. I was saying the car hadn't even been challenged so I went for it after delivering to that dreadful Clifton Colony apartment complex. That two-hour ice storm back in December was way worse than what we had this week, as was the monster snow last March when Cincinnati got 12" and Columbus got 20". The only street I didn't attempt to drive was Glendora across from the VA hospital, which had not been plowed. So I called the dude and ended up parking on Nixon and walking the pizza down that little hill to his house. Those of you who know where this is will understand. But I got a special tip on that delivery...when I got back to my car I looked up in that apartment at Vine & Nixon and saw a naked lady! [...] Yeah, as part-time jobs go, pizza delivery has the highest $ to low-stress ratio of any I know of, plus the camaraderie of harmless pot heads back at the place. And you get to see fun stuff like people with knives sticking out of their heads in the hospital ER's.
January 30, 200916 yr I've always wondered what those Level Snow Emergency things meant. Are they issued by the state or the local county??? They never issue them in Erie County or Huron County or Lorain County for that matter...... Regardless, I think if people just use common sense, you can still travel. Oh, and between my time in Ohio and Illinois, I've noticed that Ohio is WAY MORE SUPERIOR when it comes to taking care of snowy/icy roads.......all the more reason to come back :) lol
January 30, 200916 yr Jmeck you only had it easy, because no one else was on the roads. If everyone showed up at work it would be a FAR different story. It's like saying a wide receive should have had a touchdown because he's was wide open after every play. Nah he was not wide open. The defender went after the ball after it was thrown so of course the other receiver would look wide open after the fact.
January 30, 200916 yr I delivered pies for years and never understood the thought processes that would lead a person to call for delivery when the snow was awful. I was fine delivery driving in it (except for the first year or so with my Ford Aerostar minivan) but I couldn't imagine thinking, "I'm not going out in this mess, I'll make someone else do it!" Tip appropriately, I'm happy. Stiff me on a $5 order 10 miles from the store in a blizzard, I'm fuming.
January 30, 200916 yr Apparently they're thinking "leave this weather to the experts (aka 18 yr old with a rusted out '87 Stanza)" Whatever, it's business, though I never made anything near $220 in a night!
February 3, 200916 yr The Tri-State will see snow again today' date=' with five to seven inches of accumulation by tonight... maybe more in Northern Kentucky.[/quote'] Fo real? Edit: They have now retracted their original prediction and changed it to the more reasonable: The Tri-State will see snow again today, with two to four inches of accumulation by tonight.
