Posted January 28, 200916 yr Well, we didn't get over two feet of snow (that was last year). We got an inch of snow followed by sleet which formed a nice thick sheet of ice and a few inches of snow on top of that. I'm certain I have to go in this evening, so this is only follows my commute to the middle of the Short North. I wasn't going to bike in this sh!t, I already did a bit of that last night and walked most the way back home. COTA is free on level 2 or higher emergencies, but I thought this would a more fun option. I also figure High St. would be the most interesting route. Here's gorgeous King Ave. in the heart of the Peach District (much better than "south campus", this is not a campus thank you). It's a rather major street, yet never seems to get salted or plowed. Heading down to the Short North, I notice Columbus' love for pedestrians. They saved all the slushy grey snow from High St. and covered the entire sidewalk in it, just for us! It's understandable though, since with all the cars here one lane is not enough. Further down over a block pedestrians have to cross the street due to construction on The Jackson instead of getting the right lane, again anything but inconvenience drivers. Now further down are more tricky intersections to cross. Notice the pin-point precision as demonstrated by this professional pedestrian. Now it's my turn (see bottom right). Made it across, but mis-stepped towards the end of the intersection where there is water and slush my foot landed right in it, but fortunately not long enough to get a wet sock. A common mistake among non-veterans. It's nice that some businesses are open today, but could you please shovel your sidewalk? Glen Elon Shoes, another Short North retail casualty. I thought shoe stores do great in corridors like these, there's usually too many. Some respite: only a light layer of snow. They're closed due to the weather and they have the documents to prove it! This parking lot isn't getting any lovin' today. Northstar wins the "Cleanest Sidewalk Contest". You did a bang up job, guys. How can you argue with that? You can't. Figure I'd use that money to splurge on a local vegan dessert and a nice tip. If it turns out there's no work, great. Either way: free bus rides! Part 2: Wah, I have work. But first I get to walk along Broad and High and the statehouse; best in the country. Had to walk in the street along a side street to get there without wet socks and dodge some puddles. Works out and at this point I had slipped three times and managed to regain my balance. It looks like harmless snow, expect it's all icy on top. There was a lot of this. Good thing I'm relatively flexible. Due to unsafe conditions no one is allowed in this building. I'm guessing the ceiling caved in judging by all the debris. Hope everyone's OK. Time to have a drink while I wait for the bus. Did I mention I was carrying around a Donatos pizza box (with some pizza inside) from work? They serve food here, so I figured I'd stick it in the inconspicuous corner at the side of the bar. Moments later while checking the realtime location of the bus on my laptop by leaching from the establishment next door, I find the box has disappeared. Oh well. It was time to catch the bus. Too bad, this bike is screwed. Bus came a little later but I got to chat with someone at the stop and had a nice warm ride back home. Well, almost, I had to walk on the sidewalk which was a mix of snow and ice so that when you slipped you weren't in danger of falling over. I must have looked like I was drunk sliding around, but there was another guy looking the same way. Just a taste of winter fun in the middle of Ohio here in Columbus.
