July 25, 200717 yr Prospect Avenue work following the construction of the Gateway sports complex also buried power lines. From Ontario to East 55th, I believe. Regardless of inaccuracies, this is still great news for Gordon Square!
July 26, 200717 yr Dan B -- you are wonderful! thank you! Much appreciated. We will plan to attend once we move or maybe B4.
July 30, 200717 yr passed through the area this afternoon (a Sunday) and got a really good feeling. things actually seemed a little bustling. Gypsy beans was doing well, and a new store has opened- Kitch City. lots of people walking and biking. I was very happy to see this. Go DS!
July 30, 200717 yr At MayDay's suggestion, I had Sparklewash come out and do a test area on the Barone Building. I apologize to those who don't think we need to do a "This Old House" on this thread! :wink2: Anyway, what a difference!!!
July 30, 200717 yr Author Dan, looks great and keep us posted - I think there are a lot people who would be interested in your experience (what's involved with a rehab, what vendors/contractors are good to work with, etc.). clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
July 30, 200717 yr Yeah .. I'm definitely interested. I can't wait to visit Cleveland in a few days .. seems like there's a lot of exploring and checking-things-out that I'll have to do. :)
July 30, 200717 yr What about a "this old house" thread with the city or neighborhood in the title? and pictures would be a must. I am pretty sure renovations are worthy (given all we do with new contruction) of a thread.

August 7, 200717 yr Well, this sucks: Parish Hall Cleveland regrets to announce that we will be closing as of October 1st 2007. Parish Hall Cleveland was started by a group of friends interested in presenting art, music, and performance to Northeast Ohio. Parish Hall was a collective of artists, musicians, and lovers of both. While in existence for just under two years the organization was supported largely through the individual and collective efforts finically and other wise of the operating members. The support within the community was strong, from not only the local media but also from an audience base that truly seemed to enjoy the space and programming, for which we are all gracious and thankful. The pressures of running a venue rooted in a volunteer staff took it’s toll. It was never easy, but at times greatly rewarding and fun. The Hall was just at the threshold of entering a new era, one of funding, a wider audience, and in some degree achieving the goal of becoming a monetarily self-sufficient entity. In the end, it is a matter of burning out to reach this goal, internally and individually the passion that made the organization what it was in many ways also sealed it’s fate. Our time and energy in making Parish Hall successful was not in vain though. We knew from the start Parish Hall was about something bigger than the individual or the group. It was about building a stronger artistic community, a potentially better Cleveland, and in some small way the people that came to the Hall, showed work at the Hall, or performed at the Hall felt that. That energy of trying to do something, create something from what was around with in the context of the immediate environment. We would like to thank everyone that made Parish Hall possible; everyone that showed up and everyone that participated. We hope that it made a difference even if just for a moment or provided a spark for someone to create, to start something, to reflect, or too just enjoy life. Here’s to the future and whatever it may bring.
August 7, 200717 yr Author It sucks for the moment, but given the momentum of everything else in the area - I doubt the building (or the group) will be down-and-out for too long :-) clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
August 7, 200717 yr No, my understanding is that CPT has had its eye on this building for a while. But the Parish Hall outfit was a distinct outfit that really brought a lot of younger people into the arts and culture scene. They put on an amazing array of shows, etc. and helped to shore up the evening street traffic. I hope they land somewhere else.
August 21, 200717 yr Time for the infamous UO letter writers to get to work. This is from Many Metcalf from the Cleveland Ecovillage Yahoo group: Many of you may be aware of or have participated in the planning process for the award-winning Zone Recreation Center Sustainable Greenspace Master Plan, which will be a major catalyst for reinvestment on Lorain Avenue. Your show of support for this plan is now urgently needed. Mayor Jackson's office recently asked the parks department to replace the soccer field at Zone Recreation Center in its current location with a new irrigated, grass field. While improvements to the soccer field are unquestionably needed soon, the Mayor's request does not take into consideration and is not compatible with the greenspace plan generated by our community. The sustainable greenspace master plan calls for the soccer field to be rebuilt in a new location with sustainable elements and a durable, synthetic playing surface. Please take a moment at this crucial time to let the Mayor's office know that there is community support for the greenspace plan. Below is a sample support letter that you can copy and paste into an email or letter to the Mayor's office, Mayor Frank Jackson, Office of the Mayor, 601 Lakeside Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44114, [email protected] . Or you can call the Mayor's office directly at 216-664-3990. It may also be helpful to contact the mayor's chief of staff, Ken Silliman, at Ken Silliman, Chief of Staff, 601 Lakeside Avenue, or cc him at [email protected], or give him a call at 664-2000. Please also cc me, Mandy Metcalf at [email protected] so that we know you've responded. To learn more about the greenspace plan, go to www.clevelandecovillage.org and click on Zone Recreation Center planning. Here is the sample letter: Mayor Frank Jackson City of Cleveland 601 Lakeside Avenue Cleveland, OH 44114 Dear Mayor Jackson, I would like to express my support for the Michael Zone Recreation Center Sustainable Greenspace project. I was troubled to learn that the soccer field at Zone Rec will be rebuilt in its present location, and I hope that this will not jeopardize the future implementation of the plan. I participated in the extensive planning process for the Zone Rec Sustainable Greenspace Master Plan, which included involvement from the City Parks department and over 300 local residents. The resulting plan captures the desires and the imagination of the community for a recreation center campus that incorporates ecological design and environmental education while providing needed recreational improvements and new amenities. Some of the features of the plan I'm excited about include a new central gathering area that reflects the history of the site in its design, areas of natural habitat including a meadow area, wetlands that capture stormwater on site, rain gardens, and butterfly gardens, parking on Lorain Avenue that can be shared with local businesses, alternative energy demonstrations, a new durable synthetic turf soccer field, improved baseball and basketball facilities, a new outdoor splash park, new tennis courts, public art, and a rock climbing wall. The plan promotes the Cleveland EcoVillage neighborhood's goals of ecological sustainability and healthy living. It has already gained national recognition as an innovative demonstration of sustainable neighborhood investment. The proposed allocation of $2.5 million for the greenspace project in the City of Cleveland capital budget, in addition to support pledged from Councilman Matthew Zone, will provide the necessary match for foundation and private funding that can make the project a reality quickly. Please accept this letter as an expression of support for implementation of the award-winning Sustainable Greenspace Master Plan for Zone Recreation Center. Thank you, Your name and address here
August 21, 200717 yr In other news, there are plans for a new restaurant in the works for the old bank building on the south side of Detroit, just west of Kitsch, the Detroit Studio, and M% Gallery. They're trying to get a liquor permit on the November ballot, so if you're in the neighborhood, keep an eye out for the petition and the ballot issue. The concept is a neighborhood Mediterranean theme, with pizzas and pastas. If this sounds familiar, yes, this is the same guy who owns One Walnut downtown and was previously attempting to open the venue adjacent to Gypsy. The new location is apparently more suitable!
August 21, 200717 yr really too bad about Parish Hall closing, though. Tat was a fantastic little venue for indie bands and art showings.. or art bands and indie showings.. just loved the DIY space..
August 22, 200717 yr it closed?? oh man, that was such a cute venue to have events at. It closes in October.
August 22, 200717 yr Author I love how the "parking" link leads to a 404 error - it should stay that way :-) clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
August 22, 200717 yr wow, yes, I just caught that Parish Hall news on their site yesterday. Honestly, I would spend money at PH 10 times before going to CPT once. That's not saying that CPT isn't an amazing asset and worth my patronage. I'm just saying that for what I'm into, Parish Hall was the bee's knees and CPT is just not my bag. That said, I think the two made a great tandem as anchors to the east end of the district. Now, who knows? I'd like to know more about this apparently mysterious departure...
August 23, 200717 yr Good Day Urban Ohioans! August 23, 200717 yr Author As long as everyone is at Bier Markt by 7! :-D http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php?topic=13827.30 clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
August 23, 200717 yr That ad says food by "ReddStone Bar & Grille". I'm assuming that means it's open?
August 23, 200717 yr No, Reddstone is in the old Snickers' space on W. 76th I believe. Stone Mad is on W. 65th and is from the owner of the Treehouse.
August 23, 200717 yr Okay, so 3 years ago I thought I wanted to live in Lakewood. 2 years ago I thought I wanted to live downtown. 1 year ago I thought I wanted to live in Ohio City. The past few months I thought I wanted to live Tremont. Today I feel like moving to Detroit-Shoreway.
August 23, 200717 yr ^Ditto, though I bought a house in Lakewood 4 years ago, so I'm probably not going anywhere soon.

August 24, 200717 yr DS is where it's at baby! Guv, your house rocks... When you get a chance, tell the people on UO a little more about it... all the sustainable materials, etc. It's a great model! Perhaps the EcoVillage has finally crossed Detroit?
August 24, 200717 yr The comic above the housing ads that the guv posted from Free Times "Big Fat Whale" is consistently the funniest sh!t out there. The illustrations are hilarious.
August 24, 200717 yr Yeah, congrats on the house, guv. Really beautiful, lots of attention to sustainability and I LOVED the salvaged floor. Out of curiosity, were the doors salvaged? We were walking through the house commenting on how beautiful the doors were and how they were of a better quality than you typically see these days.

Guv, you made it on the Fox 8 news this morning. The story was short, but they showed some clips of your living room and bathroom. Way to go!
August 25, 200717 yr I am sorry we missed it since we got such short notice . when it the party ( ok we will BYOB and appetizer) ?
August 25, 200717 yr We had a good opportunity to buy a house on W. Clinton (1 block south of Detroit), but passed because the neighborhood is still a little too sketchy to feel good about raising kids there. If it were just the wife and I, I think we'd have gone for it. Values are going to start rising soon, now's the time to get in there.
August 25, 200717 yr I hear the reason Parish Hall is closing is because their rent is getting raised, which to me is very unfortunate. sometimes i think with things like this "letting the market do its thing" is not the right solution...
September 28, 200717 yr Funds would fix up old theater Thursday, September 27, 2007 By Ken Prendergast West Side Sun News A major piece of funding for the restoration of the 86-year-old Capitol Theater at the Gordon Square Arcade could be approved by City Council Monday. Renovating the vacant theater at West 65th Street and Detroit Avenue into an arts venue is seen as a major piece of developing the neighborhood into an arts district that's a regional draw. There are already two other theaters in the neighborhood Cleveland Public Theater and the Near West Theater. October 2, 200717 yr I think this is from yesterdays meeting... Looks good to me. Let me know if anybody reads this differently. Ord. No. 1420-07 By Council Members Zone, Pierce Scott, Sweeney (by departmental request) Authorizing the Director of Economic Development to enter into contract with the Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization, to provide development assistance to partially finance the renovation of the Capitol Theatre located at 1400 West 65th Street, and certain other costs necessary to redevelop the property. Estimated Cost: $1,500,000 Remarks By Director Of Economic Development Department: See Legislation. PASSAGE RECOMMENDED BY COMMITTEE ON COMMUNITY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT.
October 2, 200717 yr I love how the "parking" link leads to a 404 error - it should stay that way :-) It's still that way...beautiful.
October 2, 200717 yr ^^^ That is from yesterday's meeting, but that's only the pending action and a note that the committee it came out of recommend that the full council support it. I would imagine it did pass, but you never know when one of the councilpeople might deviate from the committee's opinion. Interestingly, also on the agenda was funding for restoration of the Moreland Theatre (Buckeye neighborhood) and the Variety Theatre (Westown neighborhood).
October 2, 200717 yr I am not sure how much the Moreland theater restoration makes sense. If it is used as a theater, it will probably not succeed due to the competition from Shaker Square and Cedar Lee. For some reason, I think that I heard that it won't be used for cinematic purposes.
