Gordon Square Arts District among winners of 2010 Cleveland Arts Prize

Published: Saturday, June 19, 2010, 11:59 PM

Julie Washington, The Plain Dealer

It took a small village to raise the Gordon Square Arts District capital campaign from toddler to noisy, energetic adolescent. It's appropriate that the village will be among those honored Saturday as winners of the 2010 Cleveland Arts Prize.

It's the first time in recent memory that a Cleveland Arts Prize has been awarded not to a person or an organization but to a neighborhood.

"No one person could have done what Gordon Square Arts District is doing," said the district's executive director, Joy Roller. "To give it to one person would be totally unfair. I congratulate the Arts Prize for getting it."

The Cleveland Arts Prizes -- given to creative artists whose work enriches Northeast Ohio and whose accomplishments set a standard of excellence -- were announced in May. Artists will be honored at the annual awards event Saturday at the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Where is Loraine Road?  Oh, you mean Lorain Avenue.  From a rundown of the 1906 city ordinance to organize the street system:

"Section 3. CLASSIFICATION OF THOROUGHFARES. The term "Thoroughfare" means all ways used or opened for public travel, whatever its present designation. All thoroughfares running in a general east and west direction shall be called avenues. All thoroughfares running in a general north and south direction shall be called streets. All diagonal thoroughfares shall be called roads. All short or disconnected thoroughfares running in a general north and south direction shall be called places. All short or disconnected thoroughfares running in a general east and west direction shall be called courts. All curved thoroughfares shall be called drives."

Sorry, but I'm a stickler on these designations

^Wow, that is totally fascinating.  Don't think I had picked up on the pattern beyond Street and Avenue.

Very interesting? Perhaps this deserves it's own thread? My first question. Franklin Boulevard?

Or how Broadway got Avenue instead of Road.

The explanation goes further and states that heavily tree lined or medianed thoroughfares would be called Boulevards.  Just type in "cleveland street naming designations" on google and you'll get several sites.  I'm not sure Broadway has a suffix in the Cleveland part of the thoroughfare.  I know there is a sign on I-480 that says Broadway Avenue, but that's Garfield Heights and some cities didn't abide by all the Cleveland rules (East Cleveland, Lakewood) while others did (Euclid, Parma, Fairview, Eastlake).  Eastlake actually goes at least as high as East 344th.

Actually East 367th is the highest that I found.

NYC only goes northward up to 241st.

Also, when you include the streets to the westside (up to West 233rd) you get a total of 600 streets from west side to east side.  Cool stuff.

So out of curiosity -- Clifton Boulevard?  Chagrin Boulevard?

Oh, I should have read on for that explanation.

Rumor has it that Reddstone is coming under new management.

Hopefully food and service will improve...I really have wanted to like this place since it is in walking distance, but it consistently lets me down.

Really?

No new management, some additional investors bought in.  I think Josh does a great job with food & drinks there.  Sometimes it takes awhile to get your food or drinks, but the patio has been packed since the warm weather.  Great crowd, very diverse & friendly, great vibe there.

I can't speak for Chagrin, but once upon a time Clifton was a tree lined median and boulevard.  That is the point of the current Enhance Clifton project:  http://www.enhanceclifton.com/

Residents in Cleveland's Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood win battle to save ash trees

Published: Thursday, July 08, 2010, 12:01 AM

Everdeen Mason, The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- More than three dozen ash trees in the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood have been saved from the ax after residents successfully battled for three years against a city mandate to chop them down.

Cleveland veered from its strategy of containing the spread of the deadly emerald ash borer by taking down trees and is allowing the use of trunk injection to protect the more than 60-year-old trees from the insect.

Ash trees are a point of pride for West 50th Street residents, who say the lush canopy provided by the trees' leaves keeps their street beautiful and cool.

I believe Roseangel opened up yesterday, formerly LaBoca.  I checked inside Tuesday night and they were still hard at work painting & cleaning.  Just curious if anyone had a chance to try out the new menu yet???

The region's name is derived from the medieval Lotharingia:

I went on the second night they were open. I was really disappointed - the tacos were lackluster and the beans & rice were coated with what tasted like that powdered Mexican seasoning you can buy at any supermarket. And at $4.25 per taco, I expected something a lot more special. I'm cutting them slack because they're so new, but I'm surprised a chef as prominent as Marlin Kaplin would associate himself with food this ho-hum. I hope they get their act together soon because I really like the concept.

Gordon Square Theatre gets $200,000 from state for asbestos removal

Published: Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 3:07 PM

Tom Breckenridge, The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Federal stimulus money will help with the continued renovation of the Cleveland Public Theatre, in Cleveland's Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood.

The new money should pay for asbestos removal in the ceiling of Gordon Square Theatre, one of three performance venues that constitute Cleveland Public Theatre, said general manager Denis Griesmer.

The work is scheduled from January to March, when the Gordon Square Theatre is typically closed, Griesmer said.

Digging out an old thread, construction progress looks steady for the new XYZ Tavern on Detroit next to the Public Theater.  No idea on an opening date yet though.

Anyone have an update on the "Toast" wine bar that was on 65th between the Capitol & Stone Mad?  Last I knew there was a meeting this spring where the public was invited to sound off about the project and from there it was supposed to go to a Board of Zoning Appeals...  haven't heard anything since...

I noticed XYZ got their liquor license approved by voters in the most recent ballot issue. It was approved by a narrow margin.

Vulpster?!?! Welcome back!

From the E4th thread:

That really sucks that Room Service is leaving Gordon Square. Ugh.

Agreed. The area seems to have lost momentum.

I thought RS was just moving to a bigger location in the GS neighborhood.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's the case.  If I recall correctly the owner of Room Service posted something to that effect on the E. 4th thread.  From "Danzirelli" : "I can say quite definitively that ROOM SERVICE has zero intentions of either CLOSING or MOVING locations at this time.  RS LOVES GORDON SQUARE ARTS DISTRICT and has worked very passionately in promoting it."  Well, the staying in Gordon Square part seems true, anyways.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hoping the area is not loosing momentum.  I do think the number of restaurants in the area is becoming saturated.  Retail?  Not so much.  I am sorry that RS is moving.  I have seen a building on the north side of Detroit in GS all boarded up.  Wasn't sure if that is something going in there (hoping that it was in fact expanded RS).  Perhaps it is something else and not just a response to some vandalism?  Anyone know?

I don't think one successful business relocating means that it's time for us to worry that the sky is falling.

Edit- NM, I was confused about something.

I took a quick...very quick...glance at this tonight and it looks like a renovation project going on.

Could be wrong though.

I don't think one successful business relocating means that it's time for us to worry that the sky is falling.

Not saying the sky is falling but hate to see retail leave.  Four tax preparation places and a tattoo shop don't make for great business.  Nothing against any of those places, just want to see the area continue to move forward.

I have heard it said that it is difficult for the area to support BOTH Gordon Square and the Antiques District on Lorain.  Too bad some of those shops can't move to the DS area.  The area already has arts.  Add to that antiques and the restaurants and I think the place can become more of a distination.  Destination = $$$. Dollars equate to being able to do more.

Just a thought.

I think that the Lorain Antiques district is made possible by some very low rental rates. There is not much demand for that retail space. I don't think that the antique stores could afford Gordon Square prices.

GSAD will soon be home to a very well conceived store selling sweet things.

Wine bar should be open in the Battery Park Powerhouse in a few weeks.  He passed his building inspection, health inspection and has his liquor license.  Just waiting for some finishes.

I'm hearing good rumors as well about a restaurant lease for the other side of the Powerhouse also.

^my fear is restaurant saturation where nobody wins....

Living in the hood I don't feel any saturation at this point.

The only place that isn't real busy is RoseAngle, but I don't think the food is all that good.

Stone Mad seems to have really picked up the pace.

We shall see with XYZ tavern and YOLO coming on line (and possibly this other restaurant in the Power house).

The Cleveland Public Theater and the Capitol do bring traffic.

We moved from Tremont...art walk was only once a month and they support twice the number of restaurants while being harder to get to with not much to draw people down there but the restaurants/bars

I would worry more about dilution....taking away for OC or Tremont or the Warhouse district.  Add 3 more places to what is there now and you now have a destination neighborhood with places at all levels....from Parkview to Luxe.

Hopefully you get people from Lakewood/rocky river/westlake instead of taking away from the other hoods.  It is an easy bus ride (26) from Lakewood straight down detroit.

does the powerhouse have enough parking?

they manage to have sand volleyball right next to it and the 20-30 cars that brings....it might become more of a problem as Battery Park gets built out.

I don't remember a parking lot...think it is just parking on the street

There is also a parking lot immediately west of the PH.

Maybe I missed it when I drove by because they were staging building materials and it is currently fenced off..

if you google map it you will see the lot and that all of the streets in BP have provisions for parking on both sides of the street.

shouldn't be a problem....will be a far site better than trying to park in Tremont.  and that goes for everything up around Gordon square as well

Agree with that. Unless you are drawing in *new* clientelle, then you are parsitizing. CLE can't sustain numerous "hot" restaurant districts. Either population needs to be drawn in from the 'burbs or new population is needed within city limits.

But for the time beings, I guess I'll smile and be glad I live in the "hot" neighborhood .........for now

All of this stands to reinforce the significance and importance of the West Shoreway conversion.

The Clifton/Baltic neighborhood is still hanging on to it's once-great past.  I think this is Cleveland's greatest shot to connect one viable area to another, something it always seems to have trouble doing.  We build pockets, but can never seem to connect them.

The Shoreway conversion is a GREAT opportunity to connect Clifton/Baltic to Detroit Shoreway and hopefully also Ohio City and add onto the pockets that already exist!

^good point CleBurger. High Quality Connections; the eternal missing piece in CLE. Along those lines, a bikeway along Train Ave makes a direct connection btwn DS and Tremont.

Assuming a static population and spending capacity, I think that the potential losers would be the chain restaurants throughout the region rather than particular parts of the city or suburbs. The last several years has seen remarkable growth in the number of tables in Ohio City, Tremont, and Detroit-Superior, with relatively few restaurants closing. I think that we forget how unusual that is in the restaurant industry in general.

There may be a time that we hit that saturation point of independent local restaurants, but as long as there are folks who are still choosing TGI Friday's versus Melt, Bar Cento, Happy Dog, or Prosperity SC, then further growth is possible. Even though I'm a Tremonter, having a strong D-S restaurant/bar scene is a Good Thing for the city.

I'd love to see somebody do a study to see how large the "culinary visitor" sector as grown.

Hey, don't forget about "NIKO's GREEK CONEY ISLAND" restaurant!!!!  "Proudly serving Pepsi!"

While I'll probably never frequent the place, I am glad to see something go in there and the building get reutilized.

I would love to see Michael Symon up Bar Symon again but in the Detroit Shoreway area. I think it would do great there!!
