At least these ones are somewhat appealing, as opposed to the crap that was built on the rest of Bridge.  And, as a neighborhood homeowner, I would encourage developers to cram as many $300,000 townhouses into the area as possible.  Gentrification can't happen fast enough for me!

Or the city!

'Priced from 169,900" per the developer's web site (http://townhomescleveland.com/townhomes-condos.shtml).  Still gentrification for this neighborhood, but I don't think these are going to sniff $300k.  I agree they look better than the other stuff on Bridge, but that site plan is just really ick.

What's up with the developer's logo?  Isn't that just the old CWRU logo?  I'd be surprised if CWRU were cool with that logo's new life...

Oh, I didnt see that.  That likely means lots of vinyl and other crap affordable materials.

I guess I'll take $200,000 townhomes.  As long as they cost more than my house did.

I don't agree, with existing housing being over priced, maybe these home are priced appropriately.

anyone been into the new "spice bar" in the old La Boca/Roseangel space on 58th & Detroit?

Just catching up here... really confused about why the site/unit plans don't take advantage of the auto court and back load all the Bridge units.  It's not like they're getting backyards or anything and the impact to the sidewalk is going to be fairly negative with this (essentially) block long curb cut...  Any clue as to how this was received at City Planning last week?

Anybody attend the meeting for the W65th Bike Lane project this week?  Sounds like it was pretty in depth from the person I talked to.  Hoping someone chimes in here with a recap.

I haven't had an in-depth with my buddy, but he did make a sarcastic remark like "it'll be really nice in 2027."

I'll try and get an explanation today.

FOR PASSAGE

February 13, 2012

AN EMERGENCY ORDINANCE

Designating Herman Avenue from West 73rd Street to West 76th Street with a secondary and honorary designation of “Kilbane Town”.

WHEREAS, Johnny Kilbane was one of the most prominent prize fighters of his time, winning the World Featherweight title in 1912 and holding that title through 1923, longer than any fighter in the history of boxing; and

WHEREAS, Johnny Kilbane lived at 7413 Herman Avenue during the time he won the World Featherweight title in 1912; and

WHEREAS, he was elected State Senator in 1941, followed by State Representative, and was elected Cleveland Municipal Clerk of Courts in 1951; and

WHEREAS, in the year 2012, both Cleveland and Achill, Ireland will be celebrating the 100th Anniversary of his achievement that is so important to our rich community history, as well as the Irish and Boxing communities; and

WHEREAS, this ordinance constitutes an emergency measure for the immediate preservation of public peace, property, health or safety, now, therefore,

BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CLEVELAND:

Section 2. ^That's an emergency action of Council? Seems an inappropriate use/declaration of "emergency" which should be reserved for real emergencies.

I believe the celebration is to take place the evening before st. patricks day, so if they were going to tribute this person coincident with Achill, Ireland...they probably needed everything passed so the planning can begin.

I believe the "emergency" has less to do with pulling council off of the street where they should be putting out fires and administering CPR, and more to do with suspending the requirement for 3 public readings of the ordinance.

And now that we've thoroughly covered that, can we get back on topic?

They really got creative with the design I see

Does anyone know where the name WAVERLY comes from? There is a school one block over called Waverly School. And now this is called Waverly Station. I'd be interested to know the history, as it seems something or someone named Waverly once graced the 58th-Bridge vicinity.

Is there a link for this info (cost of the project, etc), so I may add it to my master list?

W. 58th Street used to be Waverly Avenue.

From what I've heard, the project already has financing in place.  Also, the Apartment building and surrounding homes have been completely vacated, with windows knocked out, etc.  Feel free to insert inner-city Cleveland joke here.

House Frau record store to open in gordon square arts district

http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/devnews/housefrau021612.aspx

Steven Peffer cannot easily explain why he calls his new record shop House Frau; he just likes the German-sounding name, which reminds him of dark, wood-paneled bars and frothy steins of beer. Yet the entrepreneur has a crystal-clear view of why he's opening a vinyl record store in a digitally-oriented economy: Shoppers are hungry for tangible shopping experiences, he says, and there's a viable niche market for new and used records.

grace brothers to open garden store in urban neighborhood of detroit shoreway

Grace Brothers, a seven-acre nursery and garden store in Broadview Heights that previously relied upon the suburban market, is vying for a new, urban market. This month, the family-owned company will open a gardening, farming and pet store in the growing Detroit Shoreway neighborhood on Cleveland's west side.

Tremendous.  I will be using both to the fullest extent

This is really nice to see.  This is a substantial development, which will complement the  4-5 unit townhomes dotting Bridge Ave. that were built a decade or so ago... It is pulling quality living south of Gordon Sq. to, hopefully, balance the impressive Battery Park development (and spin-offs) to the north.  It's also interesting that while multi-unit RE new starts are struggling downtown post 2008, they are chugging along in the neighborhoods (ie Tremont, esp, and UC, and Battery Pk, among others).

I wish Ecovillage would get started back up again as well!  Detroit Shoreway has so much potential.

^Yes.  Ecovillage was built with so much promise and fanfare as a model TOD.  There were plans for an office/condo tower, a grocery store, a post office and other retail built at the new Rapid station.  None was built and Ecovillage remains as an island in a portion of Detroit Shoreway that is still pretty rough around the edges.  The good news is that the rougher elements of the area (drugs, prostitution, etc.) seems to be diminishing and more professionals are pushing toward south along W. 65th, but it hasn't reached the Ecovillage area... yet.  Waverly station will be a major step.

There have a been a number of eco-cottages built over the past couple of years in this area. To put that more accurately, a number of small homes have been renovated into eco cottages. The original eco village townhomes were pretty frumpy looking imho.

West Clinton should also get some attention. That street has seen so many renovations over the past 2-3 years. It is a gorgeous street with perhaps the best intact housing stock of any street on the near west side. Another home just got the ok at landmarks yesterday.

When Gardenwalk was going on, I got to see a lot of those properties on Clinton and Franklin....very neat!!!  Rooftop gardens, beekeepers, some amazing spaces.  There's a lot going on, but so much more needs done!

5801 Detroit is already operating as a mixed-use building. It is the Happy Dog. I think this zoning appeal has more to do with a legal issue over whether or not they can permit entertainment and dancing. The Happy Dog operates as a concert club, and this has maybe become under fire by neighbors. The Happy Dog is also wrapped up in political issue over the admissions tax controversy with the mayor's office, and the mayor may be trying to intimidate the Happy Dog with these legal issues.

Just a weird note, but I never realized that the odd numbered addresses are on the south side of the avenues on the west side, but the odd numbered addresses are on the NORTH side of the avenues on the east side.

Quick off continuance off topic, but this is such a crime.  If any UO's hear of ways to stay active in calling the city off these small clubs I'm all ears.

Just another reason why the west side is cooler!

Is it just on the other side of the river or do they flip at Ontario?

At Ontario.  The state office building is 615 W Superior, but it's east of the river, south side of the street.

That's not off topic at all and the solution is political.  Speak out against the people who are doing it.  Get them out of office so they can't do any more damage.  Be sarcastic about it, as in "Great idea Frank, spray the city with youth repellent.  Act like the bad guy in Footloose.  What this town needs is a social clampdown from some bygone age.  Yeah.  That'll draw the software companies."

We'd be a lot further along right now if Cleveland's top leaders weren't so devastatingly horrible.  It's not like we don't have new people with modern sensibilities ready to go, but they keep getting spanked in elections.  I've gone door to door for young candidates on many summer nights.  I've given speeches supporting them at precinct committee meetings.  The regulars at these meetings all look like they'd vote against dancing if it came to a referendum.  But there aren't that many of them.  Time to take over.

The Happy Dog is seriously being targeted. Members of the fire department came in to close the place one night because they were supposedly over capacity. There were empty bar stools and seats! Then, some state officials came in another night to make sure everyone in there had a valid state ID.

Maybe a developer wants the entire block?

But seriously, I'm going to send off some emails to the mayor, etc. This tax on small business is wrongheaded and counterproductive.
