This is a valid point. But I was thinking, while Cleveland doesn't not have that insane high cost of living, it does have a great deal of divergence in livability throughout.

 

I'd much rather live in a small house or micro apartment in a vibrant neighborhood vs. a cheaper, larger, nicer house in a struggling area.

Even if zoning changes are made to allow these tiny houses, I'm sure they're still going to be a pretty niche product.  I don't think they'll drastically affect the number of people buying and rehabbing existing housing stock.

Speed limits on the now-50 mph Shoreway will drop to 40 mph when construction starts June 22 to replace the pavement on the three-mile Shoreway between Clifton Boulevard/Lake Avenue and the Main Avenue Bridge. The speed limit will be reduced further to the boulevard-level 35 mph this fall.

 

 

Two lanes of the Shoreway will be maintained in both directions throughout most of the construction. More lanes may be closed occasionally, during  off-peak times. A full three lanes will be open in the winter when construction is halted.

 

There will be intermittent, posted detours for entrance and exit ramps at Lake Avenue, Edgewater Park, West 49th Street, West 45th Street and West 25th Street.

 

The ramp closures will be phased in so reasonable detours are in place and simultaneous closing of ramps is kept to a minimum...

 

 

I still don't get the point of the Shoreway project. I get that it will make the drive more scenic but if we couldn't get funding and full backing of ODOT to convert it to a full access road,what is the point?

Maybe it's just the long game.  Maybe full access isn't in play in 2015 but maybe after W73rd gets done and people get used to 35 MPH then in the next round of upgrades a decade from now they could have an easier time selling a few more interections.

Hmm, well I'd say even the half-assed makeover is still a drastic improvement imho.

 

And I think what we're seeing is a change in philosophy; that the beach isn't just a place to drive past at 70 mph.

Looks like the city and Snavely group are doing a land swap for the trail. This is from the Cleveland planning commission agenda from yesterday.

Ah thank you! Good to know. I was confused at first because the picture in the article makes it look like the park will take of alot more of the property than I remembered from the Snavely plans, now I realize it was just the angle of the picture.

If it was a machine shop, best be careful.  Some of the old school cutting oils can trigger CERCLA issues.

^ well, at least they are preserving the terra cotta stone. That building has been sitting in decay for a long time. Unfortunately it just wouldn't be feasible to save the hold building. I hope there are plans for a development on that corner. I'd hate to see it sit empty.

^that's a pretty good corner.  Would be an excellent location for a nice mixed use development.  Need to do something with the acres of parking across the street at that Burger King...

The Burger King, McDonalds, and Family Dollar are really holding back developments on that stretch of Detroit (imo).

I went to a meeting a few months back regarding watterson lake. There was a small contingent of us that wanted city to work harder to find a special group of

Who could take on such a Chellenging project. They consulted with like one group who said it couldn't be done. I challenged zone and the residents to give it more time and cast a wider net from coast to coast for a group who could take on this gorgeous structure despite the asbestos.  The entire west Clinton street was there and they've all been paranoid about this building for years and couldn't open up their mind to a different alternative. And we knock down some greatness. Decisions like that prevent a neighborhood to elevate and have a unique feature you can't find anywhere else in the country. But hey, the people spoke. So let's shoot for average.

 

I have no problem with the McDonald's or Burger King (besides huge parking lot). The family dollar is the worst in the city. You go to the worst neighborhoods in the city and they have family dollars with nicer facades and a more welcoming exterior.  Wish that would come down

It's too bad it couldn't be saved, but I'm glad at least something is happening. I'd love to see some new apartments and retail on that corner.

 

And my issue with McDonalds and Burger King isn't that they exist, but rather that their designs are so anti-urban. It's possible for fast food restaurants to be built closer to the sidewalk, with parking reserved for the back. Right now it's just a huge waste of space, and it completely contradicts the urban atmosphere of Gordon Square just a few blocks east. The Family Dollar with the metal bars over the windows really needs to come down. It's going to be the first thing that people see when they enter the neighborhood from W. 73rd (getting off from the new Shoreway exit).

 

PS - Word on the street is that someone is purchasing the yellow brick building across from Family Dollar, with the intention to renovate it for apartments and retail/restaurant. THANK GOD. That building is in such a state of disrepair, and I've been worried that someone would tear it down.

Bummer about Watterson-Lake. These are the kinds of buildings that the historic preservation tax credits should be helping, but I guess the building condition and market rents never quite coincided to make it happen.

I heard from a friend who knows the owners that Brewnuts might be opening in the Detroit Shoreway area. Not sure if that would be a permanent spot or just a pop up spot.

 

I couldn't find anything from them directly that confirms this though.

They're interested in the southwest corner of West 65th and Detroit. The old offices of Matt Zone. They also want to sell beer, so there's a petition floating around out there to allow for the liquor license variance.

It is so close to actually being a street again that last night I saw 2 separate cars go pass the barricades at W67th to try to make it to Battery Park.

 

The first guy only made it to 70th.  But the second one was a jeep and made it pseudo-off road all the way to the tunnel but had to turn back due to the fencing.

Some progress on the bluffs.  (shot panoramic on Breakwater looking roughly to the North West)

 

 

Mostly big hunks of rocks smashed into small piles of dirt and smoothed over a bit.... but slow and steady wins I guess.

^ Nice!  better than all the scraps from the demolition.  IMO, this will be the biggest impact on the neighborhood.  Almost all the businesses will see an immediate boost with that many new residents.

Is there a plan for redeveloping that site once the school is down?  The City or School Board left that building in such a sad state for so long, not surprised they demo'd it.  Just hope something good goes back there, pretty high profile corner
