August 11, 20159 yr I heard they are preserving the terra cotta stone from Watterson-Lake. Preserved for what, exactly? Will it be required that anything built on that site must incorporate the terra cotta? I hope that's the case, at least.
August 11, 20159 yr There are 2 buildings opening in a just a number of days that are supposed to incorporate the terra cotta of the demolished structures that came before them. 1) Cle School of Arts and 2) CSU's CIMP. In both cases, i believe, the agreement was that the salvagd elements would be incorporated on the interior. CSA is using the original CSA's facade. CIMP is using the (?) Cooper School of Music's facade. itll be interesting to see if this is indeed the case w/ both of these new bldgs.
August 12, 20159 yr ^ Councilman Zone mentioned at the Euclid Hill Block Club meeting the terra cotta will be incorporated into the new "Waverly Lake" school. He also mentioned there's an open house at Max Haye's at 10:30am on August 31 if anyone knows folks who want to redevelop the area!
August 31, 20159 yr Sneak peek of the Arcadian, the newest addition to Gordon Square Three years, 300 menus and one completely ground-up renovation later, Cory Hess is gearing up to open the Arcadian, his new upscale bar and eatery in the Gordon Square Arts District. The casual venue, which is located in the former City Grill space at 6416 Detroit Ave., is slated to open in November. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20150831/BLOGS05/150839966/sneak-peek-of-the-arcadian-the-newest-addition-to-gordon-square
September 2, 20159 yr This would be a very bad move by CMSD, imho Developers want old Max Hayes school and its lake view; Cleveland schools say no By Patrick O'Donnell, The Plain Dealer Email the author | Follow on Twitter on September 02, 2015 at 9:30 AM, updated September 02, 2015 at 9:40 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland school district is holding firm on its plans to build a new high school on the site of the old Max Hayes vocational school on Detroit Avenue - even as one city councilman and some planners eye the property for new housing. Mayor Frank Jackson and other officials had a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday for the new Max Hayes, built just south of Interstate 90, while the old school sits empty overlooking the West Shoreway at W. 46th Street. The district has the five-acre property at the border of the Ohio City and Detroit-Shoreway neighborhoods slated for a long-promised new West Side high school. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2015/09/developers_want_old_max_hayes_school_and_its_lake_view_cleveland_schools_say_no.html
September 2, 20159 yr What would a shrinking school district want with this land?? "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
September 2, 20159 yr NOOOOO!!!! This would be a huge waste of an opportunity!!! We have to do something about this. Does anyone know if there is a remote chance that the school will build somewhere else? I feel like they are not being creative with their options AT ALL.
September 2, 20159 yr I'm a little ignorant over the relationship between the city and the school district. Does the city have any influence over school district decision making? I also wonder how this fits in with the pedestrian overlay district? As a neighborhood resident I'm not very keen on being jammed between two high schools, on account of all teenagers being horrible monsters.
September 2, 20159 yr Very stupid move by CMSD. It's a huge, oversized lot, and this is a shrinking school district. At the very least, they should divide the site in half, and sell half to a developer, and build a more vertical high school. There is absolutely no reason to hold on to the whole site.
September 2, 20159 yr What would a shrinking school district want with this land?? The school district always feels like they are getting screwed. They know this land is valuable and even though they have no real value addition, they want to hold it. The only consideration for locating a school should be proximity to the students and cost to build. I don't think this fits either criteria as well as other locations mentioned. Frank Jackson needs to make an executive decision and put the school elsewhere. Probably on the site the city already paid $5 million to clean up that is vacant...
September 2, 20159 yr I wasn't expecting the school district to just roll over for developer profit. This could also just be negotiating tactic to get more for the site. Why not split the parcel into two? 5 acres is roughly 220,000 square feet. Sell 2 acres for a mixed-use development to partly fund a new high school on 3 acres along W.49th. That is plenty of space for a 5 story school with auditorium and garage for ~200 cars. The area is perfect for this kind of density -- school AND residential. Very stupid move by CMSD. It's a huge, oversized lot, and this is a shrinking school district. At the very least, they should divide the site in half, and sell half to a developer, and build a more vertical high school. There is absolutely no reason to hold on to the whole site. This.

September 13, 20159 yr Building a work of art, creativity 78th Street Studios a hub for events, innovation, energy in Gordon Square September 12, 2015 UPDATED 2 DAYS AGO By KATHY AMES CARR On an August evening in a northwest pocket of the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood, admirers of the local arts stream through the double doors of a hulking 170,000-square-foot industrial landmark. Inside, culture, energy and commerce converge within a four-level labyrinth of galleries, studios, live music and pop-up food vendors. All told, about 1,500 individuals will have experienced the free art walk featuring the creative works of about 50 tenant and guest artists after the popular Third Fridays monthly event commences at 78th Street Studios. ...78th Street Studios is a conduit for the energy pulsing within the Gordon Square Arts District and an early feeder of the humming neighborhood’s rediscovery. Eighty businesses have opened since 2007 when Gordon Square Arts District launched its $30 million capital campaign, and half of them are located at 78th Street Studios, said Judi Feniger, president and executive director. September 14, 20159 yr CMSD is chronically unconcerned in the success of the overall city, and only in seizing as big a piece of the pie as they can, with no regard to the quality of the overall pie. CMSD routinely demo's school buildings they can no longer fill, just to prevent competing charter schools from moving in. Columbus City Schools has done a decent job of coordinating efforts to adaptively reuse the schools it no longer needs. CMSD shows absolutely no interest in helping to retain its own history, let alone help grow the shrinking city that has caused CMSD's declining enrollment. Its beyond myopic and does call for new leadership. The Jackson administration went all-in with the district though, in an effort to ensure an easy reelection.
October 5, 20159 yr Photo: A couple weeks old. A September 2015 update to the W. 73rd tunnel. ____ And, don't forget: Speed limit dropping to 35 MPH on West Shoreway today Today's the day. 35 MPH. (Not that commuters will really notice it today. With the construction, rush hour has been a lot slower than 35 for the last couple of months)
October 9, 20159 yr My wife just came running down the steps like an excited, giggling child on Christmas morning... "There's a cement truck outside!" Looks like we're finally going to get Father Caruso Dr. back. After 2+ years with having a construction site instead of a street in our front yard I am very excited too. :)

October 12, 20159 yr awesome to see this progress on detroit (cant wait for Banter). 2 bldgs getting a new lease on life, as 2 were lost across the street (Watterson Elem and the Delahunt)
October 12, 20159 yr ^Yep. Couple guys affiliated with Geis got this property as a side project. Gutting and rehabbing it and hoping for a restaurant in ground floor and a small company on the top floor. They pretty much saved the building from demolition. The house attached to this property was also going to be demolished to make way for parking by these guys but have recently just put the house up for sale and the house will remain. They have been working really fast on this
October 13, 20159 yr ^^ Re: Delahunty building I found out yesterday it was being renovated by a some guys who were turning it into a very cool loungy hangout with video games, a bike shop and a stage for live music. Too bad, I bet it would have been a nice addition to the hood.
October 13, 20159 yr ^ Well, that's depressing to hear, considering I live like a block away from there. Such a nice old building with some real potential, gone overnight :( Maybe that concept could go in the Dorn Building (the yellow brick building being renovated in the above pics). Also, Banter Beer & Wine has said "Coming Soon" for months. Does anyone know when/if they're actually going to open?
October 17, 20159 yr Superelectric Pinball Parlor is now open (in the former Yellowcake space at W. 65 and Detroit). Here's a crappy pic I took from my car the other day: Looks like October could be a big month for the Gordon Square district. In addition to Superelectric, the Arcadian and Banter Beer & Wine are aiming to open by the end of the month (don't hold your breath, though).
October 18, 20159 yr Pictures from the W73rd exit today. The ramps are done. I actually saw a car head up from Edgewater park on Saturday (even though it's still legally closed)
October 26, 20159 yr Detroit and 65th is really turning into something special. The addition of Brewnuts to this corner is next level stuff.. Gordon Square set to explode with new pop-ups, pinball, poutine and more A host of highly anticipated eateries and pop-up ventures is set to take the funky Gordon Square neighborhood to the next level and beyond. "Within two months we are poised to have nearly every vacant space on Detroit from West 54th to 73rd full of activity, which is really exciting," says Chad Jones, director of marketing for the Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization (DSCDO). On the verge of opening are three pop-ups that are coming to the corridor courtesy of a contest held earlier this year. Fortunately, the judges were unable to pick just one winner from the 27 applicants. "We had so many qualified and talented people for the pop-up competition and we had some extra open spaces," says Jones, referring to DSCDO's Gordon Square real estate portfolio. "We were able to name basically three winners." http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/devnews/gordonsquarepopups102615.aspx
October 26, 20159 yr Its coming together nicely. The NRP development should be able to help sustain all this on weeknights
October 27, 20159 yr Everybody’s Favorite Beer-Based Donut Brewnuts Lands a Permanent Home Two years ago Shelley Fasulko and John Pippin introduced Clevelanders to Brewnuts and the response has been nothing short of remarkable. How could it not have been? These are local beer-flavored donuts we’re talking about after all. “There was this perfect storm going on with the beer boom that was happening in Cleveland and all of these great artisan food businesses starting up,” Fasulko says of the concept’s genesis. “Our idea was to come up with a Cleveland version of something really unique to do with donuts.” http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2015/10/27/everybodys-favorite-beer-based-donut-brewnuts-lands-a-permanent-home

November 15, 20159 yr Walked by Banter yesterday at 72nd and Detroit. Guys were working, the paper is off the front windows and a counter is in place. Looks like finally some movement on that property.
November 16, 20159 yr Vita Urbana brings gourmet flavors, convenience to Battery Park Vita Urbana, a multi-service convenience store, is scheduled to open in mid-January in the Shoreway Building, 1260 West 76th St., overlooking Edgewater Park. Designed with a sense of community, the compact, 4,000 square-foot space will pack a host of services for residents of the Shoreway Building and the entire the Battery Park neighborhood. “Vita Urbana will combine the convenience of a coffee shop, an artisanal grocery store, and a full service bar bistro,” says entrepreneur Mike Graley, a 35-year veteran of the grocery business. http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/innovationnews/vitaurbana111615.aspx?utm_source=hootsuite

It might be "done" but it is not open. Not sure if they are waiting on CPP to put in the new street lights, spraying the dirt with grass seed, or some sort of final inspection. but father caruso is not open for business yet. I was so disappointed. I had a tan and everything.

November 25, 20159 yr Strange, indeed. I sure hope they add windows and generally spruce up the whole look of the building. W. 73rd St. really needs spruced up. The whole east side of the street consists of old, largely unused, industrial buildings in the middle of a residential neighborhood. W. 73 is going to be the new access to the neighborhood from the shoreway, and it doesn't give off a very good first-impression of the hood.

(Filed Nov. 16, 2015) Residents will be fighting this one tooth and nail. We have worked very hard to create a sense of community and make the neighborhood great. Putting a drug/alcohol rehab facility right in the middle of it is not consistent with the vision of the neighborhood. The developers live in Westlake, they want to put it near an entertainment district to "tempt" the residents of the facility. My response is they should put it at Crocker Park, plenty of temptation there. IN the mean time people in the neighborhood are giving this area a shot of raising children. First meeting is December 7th with the developers. I, personally, will be on the offensive. If you have interest in fighting this, the community meeting is: Wednesday, Dec. 16th at 7 PM in the basement cafeteria of Our Lady of Mount Carmel
November 26, 20159 yr Gain a road, lose a bus route. Sounds like Ohio, which spends more on cutting grass along highways than for public transportation.... Public Meeting on December 10th about proposed elimination of the #21 and #45A and rerouting the #45 Effective: Dec 10, 2015 RTA is seeking comments on a proposal to replace the current routes #21 and #45-45A with a revised route #45. The purpose of this proposal is to improve service along Clark Avenue and West 73rd St. from daytime-only service 5 days a week, to daytime and evening service 7 days a week. If the proposal is implemented, the revised route #45 from downtown would travel west to W 25, south to Clark, west to W 73, south to Denison, and continue via Ridge (comparable to the current route) to Parma Transit Center and Tri-C West, with limited service to North Royalton. Because the #45 would no longer operate on W. 65th St., a public hearing is required before any final decision is made. Public Hearings will take place on Thursday, December 10, 2015 from 4:00-5:00pm and 6:00-7:00pm at Max S.
