For how large of an Italian heritage the DS area has, there never was much in the way of restaurants. That's always been the product of the fact that the old world families (mine included) would laugh at the idea of going to pay someone at a restaurant to make something you "know" you can make better yourself at home. About 20 years ago or so walking home from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel after school you'd have to run to get away from so and so's mom who was trying to feed you or you would be hungry for dinner at your own house....and that's like a slap in the face to an Italian woman. The only thing most of the families didn't do was bake their own bread, hence the overwhelming of success of Fiocca's when the old man was alive.

I mentioned this earlier in the tread, but my brother bought and remodeled a house on W. 67th and nearly the lake in 1995.  The neighborhood was great back then and just keeps getting better

Yeah, I was kind of confused by the fact that it seems on some of the streets up there everywhere you look there is an Italian flag or a picture of Italy, but no Italian resteraunts.

Anybody want to pool family recipes and open a heritage Italian place on the DS/GS? It would be a nice addition and nod to the heritage of the area. Although I would insist that the decor would have to match the place in the Godfather where Michael Corleone offs the cop and competeing gangster. Right down  to the old fashioned high mounted tank toilets.

The storefront of the Zitiello building on 69th would be perfect!  Or we could modify the first floor of the Barone Bldg for the restaurant!

Hey -----jsut an FYI

I think there's a red light camera put up near the theatre at 65th and Detroit now.

I was walking the district last night and did not see said camera.  Where did you see this?

I beleive there are multiple cameras at this intersection, but I think they are more for security than speeding.  Those red light cameras are huge and quite noticeable, I don't think they are being used for that but don't know for sure.

I bet you are talking about video image vehicle detection cameras rather than a red light enforcement camera. They are used in place of pavement-embedded induction loops to send a signal to the traffic lights that a vehicle is waiting at the intersection.

Yeah, I think that's what they are.  Very obvious on the Signal crossbars.

yupp....that's them

sorry for the false alarm

Can anyone tell me what's happening with those contemporary homes near the shoreway on West 54th Street?

"Happening"?  What exactly do you want to know?

Yes, those houses really stand out!  When the Shoreway gets reworked, 54th Street will get a "right-in, right-out" intersection which will bring alot more traffic by them.  Article in the PD talks with the owner/architect Robert Maschke

They live in the city. Traffic, activity, vibrancy is part of the deal.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Didn't mean traffic in a bad way.  Just meant that it's difficult to find them coming from Detroit Ave and easy to miss when you're zipping by on the Shoreway.  When the connection to the Shoreway is done, it'll be alot easier to get a closer look.  And I imagine the owners will apreciate being able to zip right out onto the Shoreway instead of looping up and back around to get on by The Harp.

Thanks for the info!  (Rather than saying, "What exactly do you want to know?")  That's the first time I've seen or heard of that project.

It appears DS-GSAD may have it's first casualty. (Sorry if this is posted in another thread). Heard a rumor that Kitsch City will be closing it's doors, but keeping merchandise available for purchase through it's website. Anyone have confirmation?

Tisk. So many want these neighborhoods filled with great little local independent establishments that define its or any given neighborhood's character--But not enough are willing to support them and abandon the big box scene. Real businesses, not museums.

I don't see anything on their website mentioning it, so who knows - the guy running it seems really nice. What I do know is I went a few weeks ago to pick up some cards. Both Room Service and duoHome (neighboring stores) had hours posted - along with "winter" hours so even though they weren't open, I knew when I could come back. Kitsch City? Nothing - no hours posted at all. Retail 101 - if your customers don't know when you're open, you can't blame them for going elsewhere.

I'd like to know for sure before I begin mourning their closure.  I hate this sort of rumor.

I emailed them asking them and scolding them at the same time...

It is hard to support some of these businesses. They sell a lot of stuff that I don't buy on a regular basis.

I just got an email back (reason why no hours posted):

Thanks for the e mail. The hours are not posted because the store is closed.

yea it's been so tough to pry myself away from the big box version of kitsch city.

what the what?!

That's some answer

I agree with 3231... it was just kind of a weird store.  Room Service and Duo Home have a lot of great home items.  Kitsch City had a cool name and sign, but was just kind of a novelty store.  I walked through several times and never really found anything I needed or wanted to buy.  Closures happen, I just hope they can find a new place that fits in well for this prime spot.

I really wish that Big Fun's had decided to put its west side location in Gordon Square. Financially-speaking though, I think Big Fun made the right decision.

My wife & I took a walk up 65th, along  Detroit and back earlier this week, Tues I believe, around 8pm.  There was a steady amount of pedestrian traffic on the street.  I was surprised for a weeknight.  I think a few legit clothing stores could do decent in the area.  Someone can test the waters of course other than me, but I think the point of "critical mass" has been reached.  Not sure what the rent is for one of those storefronts, but I think a barber/stylist type place would get steady traffic as well as a few other neighborhood essentials.  I'd like to see the post office from 65th Lorain relocate to Detroit, but that'll never happen.

A few brief updates:

-The brick building at the corner of W. 74th and Detroit has been undergoing a renovations since  late 2009.  Not sure of an opening date; but it will house ~5 units of housing + ground level storefront space.

-The former Dominos Pizza @ W. 65 & Franklin will soon open as a Falafel house; though I am unsure of the operator.

-There is a sign for an Indian Restaurant on the south side of Detroit, across from Min Ahn.

Great to hear!  I remember when this building was for sale back in '05-'06ish.  It's a nice one and I'm glad to hear it's getting some investment.

Nice! Any update on the wine bar that was being developed on W. 65th catty-corner from the Capitol?

Yay, more Indian!  Now we know that all we have to do is ask for it on UO.

Falafel house and Indian...good news!

If anyone hears what Indian restaurant or who the owners are please let me know.  I'm interested as I am trying to lure an Indian restaurant to my development and not having much luck

I've been to the renovated Capitol Theater a few times now, so I'll post my thoughts since I don't see any other reviews in the thread.  The digital projectors are unbelievably bright and crisp.  In the two upstairs theaters they are perfectly sized and it look amazing.  The seats are a little tightly spaced though, as this is the old balcony and I don't think they could do much with the old seat spacing.  The main theater is beautiful and the seats are very comfortable and well spaced.  Overall, a great little theater in a nice neighborhood.

the seats in the upper theaters are being looked at to see if there is a cost effective way of creating additional legroom for what would amount to approx. 20-25% of the seats in each theater.

could they paint the walls darker too?  Light colored walls do not work well for a theater.

How are the attendees there?  Civilized?

I was thinking of taking my kids to see Alice in Wonderland there but worried it would be a crowd like Tower City.  The last time I went to a movie there I had to demand my money back because the theatre was full of teenage kids screaming and throwing food.

I saw Avatar there and the crowd was more civilized than nearly any theater in Northeast Ohio (including suburban ones), similar to the Cedar Lee.

Yeah, agreed, very similar to the Cedar Lee.

Good to hear--I will definitely check it out.

Capitol could not be more different from Tower City.

I also saw Avatar at Capitol and  my party of 12 was the poorest behaved in the place....and all that we did was accidentally spill a couple of Dortmunders

It is a peaceful moviegoing experience

Now for some constructive critique on the theater (Capitol)...are we allowed to do this? Overall,  like the place, but...as I went twice... I was not impressed with the fact that the decor was rather bland...No old time movie murals or posters fore an added feel. That would be nice. Sound delivery used to be an art to get the right QUALITY of sound...there is a huge difference between quality and quantity...and like many theaters these days, they seemed to have jumped on this monkey see monkey do thing as the sound system is merely LOUD and not that of quality. A silent film was more like an acoustic assault. I also noticed that the seats seemed to have had corners cut on them... You will notice that there were, I believe, 2 anchors on each side of the seats to be anchored into the concrete on the floor with a bolt.....and only two were utilized on each side---and whilst this may be fine for 1930 when obesity was not everywhere within eyeshot in America.... In this day and age, those seats may suffer. Lastly, where are all these so called independent and progressive films I heard where to be a main feature ala Cedar Lee? I wrote to management about the comments, along with several other people in a movie group I was with.

Shame... I worked in the TC theater when it first opened...and the management was HOYTS out of Australia. (I have attended Hoyts here in Australia and they are top notch run theaters...I never had a problem) When TC first opened.... I remember clearly in orientations how it was emphasized that they would not tolerate that kind of behavior and if it occurred, the offenders would be escorted out of the place by security. Ushers would walk througeach theater on rounds about every 10 minutes. I have not been back there in a while but if it is as you describe, then management needs to grow a spine there.....and in any place where such behavior is overlooked or has management pretending like it does not exist, otherwise left unabated, you can kiss the theaters good bye. Just watch. If anyone has experiences like this in these places, by all means....call, visit or write to the management about it.

Not sure who was managing the last time I went there, which was several years ago.  They did refund my money after much debate in the lobby (I left barely 10 minutes into the film).  I have voiced my opinion of them by never returning to that location since.  I hope it has improved, but it was one of those situations that will take a lot for me to overcome my memory of....

If there's one thing you should avoid in Cleveland, it's Tower City... and its theaters in particular.  Have you ever experienced the infamous "a rat just ran across my feet!" problem?  The bottom floor of Tower City is infested with rats and the popcorn that falls onto the floor is basically a buffet for the critters.

Good luck if you go to Tower City!  I'm sticking with the Capitol Theater and if they're not playing the movie, I go to the suburbs.
