Is gentrification a good or bad thing? Depends on who you ask.

I think most of us live with blinders on. Unable to see things that don't fit their preconceptions. The world is usually more nuanced and complicated than most are willing to admit. I try to look beyond what someone is saying and see if I can figure out what is prompting their position in the first place. I may not agree with their statement but if I can find their reason it's usually more insightful than their statement. Isn't that the first step to understanding? And once you understand someone then it's easier to find a solution to a  problem.

In my opinion, there is very little gentrification in the city of Cleveland. Most of what is occurring is run down neighborhoods are simply going through a redevelopment stage.

Agreed, a lot of the big projects recently have been parking lots and/or abandoned warehouses. I find when people use gentrification in Cleveland they just mean higher income populations moving into what has been low income communities for the last few decades

^ I agree. While there are those who are being priced out of some neighborhoods I think at this point the scale of gentrification is still quite small. We could use a lot more development in the city. I also think as gentrification increases this is the time to put some thought into how to bring along those who can no longer afford the rent or pay the property taxes if they own.

Cleveland continues to be a poor city so our baby steps at economic progress show us the road is still a long one. Even so, we have to figure out a way to include the habitually poor. I know there is a history of failed social programs but we can't give up. Maybe we need to look outside the country to see what kind of programs work there and apply some of those successful ideas here.

I believe a rising tide lifts all boats. If we can figure out a way to create citizens who are more a part of the solution and less a part of the problem we will all benefit.

Are the last three pictures the site of the proposed Horton and Harper apartment building? If yes, I’m surprised to see work being done on the site. It is only up for schematic approval tomorrow before the planning commission and apparently is a opposed by the ward council person.

How many units have been added to this area in the past 10-15 years? Its gotta be a pretty crazy number, right?

Edited by Ineffable_Matt

I’ve never heard of another Cleveland council person pipe in more sharing their disapproval or elongating the process for developments and businesses, more than Jenny Spencer.

The w 73 st apartments is a great development, tastefully done and instantly transforms the transition from Gordon square to battery park.

Will also say the city needs to put our money where their mouth is, I agree with the reduction of parking and making it more difficult for folk to use their car in our city forcing them to look for alternatives however especially in a 4 season city the city needs to reinvest in real public transit alternatives… street cars/rail and expand them to our cities newer denser neighborhoods.

I’d bike year round if I could but that’s just not realistic here (let alone walking, the city lags in clearing snow by days), need real alternatives especially as we continue to grow our population and reduce parking.

Any word on outcome of the Planning Commission meeting today?

This is infuriating. This neighborhood grows because of it’s location only. It’s a slow, difficult slog because of its inept “leadership”.

Get a better bike! lol joking, one thing that's great about this neighborhood is having the Metroparks nearby where they actually clear paths in the winter (not sure if the D-S side of the path falls under the metroparks jurisdiction or not). I've ranted about it time and time again (mostly during Jackson admin) but Detroit has a great snow plan and there's no reason we can't either (I have faith in Bibb for this).

Major League was on the other night and couldn't help but think of this development when they showed Lynn Weslin's apartment lol:

The actual movie shows the apartment a lot better than this, but maybe it'll refresh some memories of what I'm talking about.

Wow, sure sounds like an Open Meetings Act violation.

Residents over here competing with Hessler Street residents on the "I'm not anti-development BUT don't develop anything here unless it's single family homes" anti-development take. Literal people in new builds from 2013 in Battery Park complaining about new development because it doesn't fit their single family home mindset. Guess what, you all didn't purchase the land.

The link took me directly to start of Slife’s comments. @GISguy is good like that.

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

Any time I hear the chorus of density concerns I immediately think to myself why isn't the conversation about demanding better transit in the area. Car infrastructure only gets a place so far. Greats places figure it out, it's nothing new in the evolution of cities. Personal opinion on the actual design, I dislike the look from the Mount Carmel footie field.

edit: I just got to Slife's comments and was glad to hear some of his points echoed what I was trying to convey.

the Planning Commission needs to tread lightly on this.  The project is within zoning code.  Design is subjective.  They failed to give any comments on what they would recommend to improve it.      And on a side note I did notice in Jenny Spencers letter she referenced the Westinghouse Building as a project.

I thought this was stalled… in a recent city meeting Jenny Spencer was 100% against ax throwing in her neighborhood and the approval was tabled unless something changed yesterday.

(I don’t think she’s noticed it’s been a growing trend for years)

Lol I would love to read those meeting minutes for an argument against a very casual, wholesome business that has shown success everywhere else.

I was really disgusted by Zone’s comments tbh.

The architect said they had met with the block club and near west design review…but how dare the “out of state developer” not kiss Jenny Spencer’s ring.

She is a casual acquaintance of mine and I was excited to see her get onto council. Unfortunately, my excitement was ill placed. She seems to cave to the worst forces in the city.

In more upbeat news across the street from the “pending” ax throwing place, the Spice building is gaining a new restaurant. Pretty excited to see that space in use

How is axe throwing a controversial development?  It seems fairly innocuous.

Could certainly be polarizing if one didn’t an ounce of research. Thought it was funny the applicant got up during the presentation to demonstrate

This whole thing is ridiculous. It sounds like Spencer got her feelings hurt because the developer did not meet with her or the ED Director as Detroit-Shoreway. This seems ridiculous.  Why is a community meeting needed for axe throwing? I hate the people the run this city.

Wow this guy did all his due diligence already so the board's excuse is flimsy to say the least. He already was approved for renovations for an axe throwing business and completed the renovations it seems. So turning a long abandoned building into a family friendly event space is a great win. Can't believe they are trying to stim organic growth and rejuvenation of an area.

The BOZA meeting was from May. Have they had a follow up yet?

Nope haven’t seen him back, also don’t see him on the agenda for the next meeting either.

I live in the block club area for the ax throwing place.  There were a bunch of emails about it.  The owner apparently runs a cash for gold business and has owned a bunch of businesses in Parma that have become nuisance properties.  The owner of happy dog chimed in and said he’s not against the idea but that the guy didnt seem like a good proprietor.

I don’t know exactly how I feel.  I’d be happy to see a new business there and I’m more interested in the ice cream than the ax throwing.  That building doesn’t seem big enough compared to the ax throwing places I’ve been to.   Maybe I’m wrong.  I will say that they literally  littered our street with free ice cream coupons a couple weeks ago. Not just in each mailbox, but stuck to fences, all over the sidewalk, etc.  Turned me off from them even more.

So it seems to me that they're worried this guy will create a nuisance and they are hiding behind the ax throwing thing. This is super shady on Spencer's part.

Yes a huge disappointment.   She might as well be Dona Brady all over again.
