I hope something materializes soon for any of those lots (WattersonLake, 74th/Detroit, 75th/Detroit, Burger King, Happy's Pizza.) For all the progress of the last 1-2 decades, it's pretty amazing that you still have these huge swathes of empty land in the middle of one of the more in-demand neighborhoods of Cleveland. They certainly weren’t great uses, but most of that land has only become vacant in the past 5 years or so. The Burger King and Happy’s were still operating as of last year. An entire structure was lost to fire at 75th. And there was a structure up to the curb at Watterson until recently.

August 4, 20222 yr The Walz site is now completely cleared and crews spread straw all over the site as to imply they’ll be growing grass and not a new building.
August 4, 20222 yr I think the property owner has to put down seed/straw if they're not going to be doing construction within 14 days of a demolition or site prep/grading. September 9, 20222 yr Edgewater Cafe has just gone up for sale. The owners are asking $650,000 which includes a liquor license. Excited to see who moves in, an updated business would be a great step in making Ohio City and Detroit Shoreway feel more connected. https://www.clevescene.com/food-drink/edgewater-cafe-classic-cleveland-dive-bar-in-detroit-shoreway-for-sale-40233869 And closer to Ohio City, I heard a rumor last weekend that Kowalski Heat Treating might be considering selling. Although the asking price I heard was pretty unrealistic, it does seem like the idea is being considered.
September 10, 20222 yr Aww, man. I always wanted to visit but the timing was always off. You just never knew when the place was going to be open. Sterile is a word no one would ever use to describe that bar. Or the word clean. Or sanitary.

September 12, 20222 yr A weird situation on Detroit right now as prices for listings keep going higher and higher and owners look at listing prices and get that number in their head as valuation. B Unfortunately I fear it will take some sort of correction or market shock to bring expectations back to earth.

September 13, 20222 yr I noticed the Horton and Harper West 73rd apartments are back on the Planning Commission agenda for schematic approval after being tabled last go around. It appears to me the design has changed somewhat due to previous PC criticism but I am not sure to what extent. I think that sloping front roof was eliminated. The bigger question is whether Jenny Spencer is still opposed to the project (of course the NIMBYS probably still are) as this could kill it. Will be interesting to hear what Slife has to say as, if I recall, he kinda tore into the NIMBYS last go around.

Every new building should have a an RTA board like that if they are on a line. I know you can have it on a phone....but people living there might change their attitude toward taking it if they see it everyday.

Council members and Commissioners are desperate for a single YIMBY to show up to these meetings to bear the blame of “will of the people”. I went to the University of Florida in Gainesville and we took down single family zoning with just 10 YIMBY speakers out of hundreds of NIMBYs. I’ve spoken to council people from several municipalities in greater Cleveland and many are radicalized much further than they are comfortable to say publicly. Im not going to give names but one major council person is willing to end Zoning all together. I went to the first meeting for west 73rd and not a single YIMBY showed up. How much do we actually care about urbanism in Ohio here on urban Ohio if we aren’t willing to show up to a single meeting. When and where are these meetings? I’m eager to attend but not sure how. also, regarding the car lot/big egg rumor, if you listen to the video walkthrough for Edgewater Cafe (link below) they mention an impending development on the car lot https://www.progressiveurban.com/p/4911-Detroit-Avenue-Cleveland-OH-44102/dmgid_156189062 Edited September 14, 20222 yr by Henke

September 20, 20222 yr Catholic Charities/St. Augustine are eyeing to tear down a beautiful old walk up brick apartment building they own on West 80th next to the hospital.
