Posted September 21, 200519 yr This years Oktoberfest was bitter sweet. This was my third one since I moved here and something was missing. The overcast skies, Government Square under construction, Fountain Square closing for the next year. The festivities were shifted down Fifth Street leaving Vine open for vehicle traffic which shifted the heart of Oktoberfest away from Fountain Square. Hopefully this is temporary because of the construction. Lastly they removed the pedestrian bridge over Fifth Street so I couldn't get my annual density shot of people enjoying Oktoberfest. History: Oktoberfest-Zinzinnati was founded in 1976 as a block party near historic Fountain Square to attract visitors Downtown and to celebrate Cincinnati's deep German heritage. Since its humble beginnings, the event has grown to be recognized as North America's largest Oktoberfest, attracting 500,000 annually. Oktoberfest-Zinzinnati showcases the rich German heritage of Southwestern Ohio, as well as tasty samples of German-style music, food and beer. Approximately 1,700 volunteers contribute their time and energy to stage the event. In 1994, the Crown Prince of Bavaria attended Oktoberfest-Zinzinnati and helped the event set a world record for the World's Largest Chicken Dance, with 48,000 participating. Oktoberfest-Zinzinnati held the world record in the Guinness Book of Records, 1995-97 editions. http://www.oktoberfest-zinzinnati.com/ Here is photo taken from the pedestrian bridge last year to show you what I am talking about: "I'm feeling good!" "I hope I am not next" "You looking at me?" "Sir, why do you have a chicken on your head" "Are these Rocky Mountain Oysters?" I bet this guy isn't smiling today This year Oktoberfest was shifted down Fifth Street Mmmm, I love Goetta Balls. Now if I can find where to buy them outside of Oktoberfest I would be set. "Coo-Coo" Beer and music makes people happy "Look at all these white people downtown" "Hurry up and pick a chicken" The Fifth Street pedestrian bridge was removed as part of the Fountain Square construction so this was the best shot of people I could get Some of the last shots of the Tyler Davidson Fountain we will be seeing for a while. I believe this part of the fountain will be on display at the Cincinnati Museum Center Picture taken from the stage that will be removed for the remodel of the square Carew Tower (574 Feet Tall) taken from Fountain Square Stage Carew Tower Zoom I wandered down Vine for this shot She will be missed!
