The Western Hills Plaza - (Glenway)  No loss here!    Good riddens!    Again sorry bout the picture quality.

Slated for demo are the former Media Play, Kroger, and the last two pics are of the Shell Station across the Werk Rd intersection. (Dunkin Doughnuts rumor.)  Paul closed the Marathon station within the last couple months, so unless somebody steps up soon, that may come down as well.      Talk from Centro is that they are going to add a third restaraunt somewhere in that sea of pavement.

I wish they would reconfigure the entire campus,      it could make for a descent lifestyle center.    212,000 people live within a five mile radius.

Super Target is going in that demo'ed Western Hills Plaza location, correct?  If that's the case...then there will have to be major changes down the street where the current Target sits.

I always had a dream of Western Hills Plaza as a new-urbanism style mixed-use plan with building abutting the street (and maybe even a nice urban park running through).  Glenway desperately needs some residential attention to offset the parking lot nightmares that mar the street.

Sorry to see the Wheel go, too, auto traffic is going to kill everything memorable about that area soon.

I am encouraged about the redevelopment of Western Hills Plaza and the new retail at the Glenway Dodge site.  Hopefully, this redevelopment is successful and spurs redevelopment of the shopping center on Harrison Ave (next to showcase cinema).

I would like to see the Legacy Place concept die a painful death!

Randy had a nice plan for the strip of Glenway on another thread.  Can't remember all the details.

You are correct about Target.    This will help bring a higher class of people in than most of the current tenants.   Ex: Dollar Store, Shoe stores, Game Stop, TJ Maxx, Deveroes.   (Let's face it, the customers who shop at Targets generally are a bit different than a Wal-Mart customers.)

As for Glenway Crossing, I don't know.    That development was a Hack layout from the start, plus the owners refuse to maintain their property.

They could blow it all of that up and start over again, IMO.   (Glenway Crossing area with Circuit City, Pep Boys, and the current Target.)

All in all, this is the most development at one time than the westside has seen in several generations.   (Throw in the Green Twp. Harrison corridor and the multiple projects slated for the Price Hill and Westwood area.)

Target will build new store at plaza

BY KURT BACKSCHEIDER | [email protected]

WESTWOOD - It's official.

Target is opening a new store at the Western Hills Plaza shopping center.

Representatives from the plaza's owner, Centro Properties Group, attended the Westwood Concern meeting Tuesday, Feb. 26, to say they closed a deal with the Minneapolis-based retailer.

Some rumors from some construction workers at the Plaza say that The Red Lobster is moving down to the old Glenway Dodge dealership while a new Olive Garden is going to be incorporated into the new Plaza where Red Lobster is currently.  The Marathon Station is to come down as well within the coming months.

That would certainly be an interesting shuffle.  I know my parents will be thrilled about the Olive Garden news.  :-D

It almost looks as though a Starbucks is going in on the corner of Glenway Ave and Werk Rd.  This site has been a revolving door for schlocky businesses.  If it is indeed a Starbucks it certainly looks to be the typical suburban model they are doing with the drive thru and everything.

Can anyone verify and/or clarify what is going on there?

^They put a "Coming Soon" sign up yesterday but I couldn't read it last night.  I will check today in the daylight.    It is either a Dunkin Doughnuts or Starbucks, but I think their is already a Starbucks in the Kroger across the street.    Dunkin has been the rumor for months now.

There's a stand-alone Starbucks across the street from the Kroger at Harpers Point which has a Starbucks inside of it.

EDIT: I knew I read about it somewhere:

Dunkin' Donuts coming to Westwood

BY KURT BACKSCHEIDER | [email protected]

WESTWOOD - Another option of where to buy a morning snack and cup of coffee should soon be available. Crews are moving right along with the construction of a new Dunkin' Donuts store at the intersection of Glenway Avenue and Werk Road, on the site once occupied by a Shell gas station.

"We are very enthusiastic about the Dunkin' Donuts," said Westwood Civic Association president Jim McNulty.

Does anyone have any updated Western Hills Plaza photos to post?  Is the Target building going up?  What about the renovation of the rest of the plaza?  I grew up in Western Hills and now live in Maineville near Kings Island.  I have fond memories of shopping at McAlpins, Gold Circle, Ontarios/Rinks, as well as Swallens.  Remember as a kid going to the WH Plaza summer side walk sales.  And still enjoy thinking about my old friends that I worked with at Mr. HOW Warehouse and Central Hardware.  And as a really little kid getting a hamburger and fries at Sandys!  Those were the days!  While I like the new Western Village, I hope the renovated WH Plaza is more upscale looking (more brick and extensive landscaping).  If any of you have been to the Voice of America Centre on Tylersville Rd. in West Chester, you would know the look I hope it has.  It has lots of discount places like Target, TJ Maxx, Linens and Things, Pier One and Office Depot, yet great design and I feel the best landscaped center in Greater Cincinnati.  If anyone has an update or new pictures of WHP, please post.  Thanks

I will try to get up there this week.  They have been working on the new sewer lines throughout the property and re-EAFing the existing EAFS. ( I am pretty disappointed by this.)  I doubt there will be any more brick (if any) used similar to across the street.  The Target work looks to be still pretty early in the process. (Site work with footers going in soon).  They have two giant signs at both entrances showing a rendering of the new Target.  I can't find it online anywhere though.  It's definitely going to be a couple notches up from what it once was but this final product isn't going to come close to  the VOA Centre you talk of.

Dunkin Doughnuts is finished on the opposite corner and looks much better than the empty service station that had been there for 15 years.  plus or menus the Giant Bob Marley Rug vendor that inhabited the parking lot.

I believe Dunkin Doughnuts will be opening soon. I read it cost a cool $1 million to build. And here I thought I could be a franchise owner one day. Here's pic from a few weeks ago.

Treeless...amazing.  This is suburban development in Cincinnati - crap.

LOL!    That's a pretty small lot.

Yeah It's right on the corner at Werk and Glenway? right?

Yes

This is for you Randy!!

That whole corner there is pretty sad looking. There is a rather large BP on one corner. The giant plaza at the other. This new Dunkin Donuts, and whats on the last corner?

^Hertz!      in an old Eyeglass World building.        ( Barfffff.)

New Western Hills Plaza Site Plan.      Don't know why the Marathon station is still there.  I was told it was to come down in June or July.

^The first link doesn't work...but from looking at the PDF I must say that I am extremely disappointed that there are no plans to improve/landscape the extreme amount of parking that is never...EVER used even to a 80% fill point.

I also hope that there is some kind of contingency plan for a potential Metro bus hub...a covered facility for key routes that would serve as the westside bus hub.

^The 2nd link actually has the same info.

I will 100% guarantee that any sort of bus hub will not happen on Centro's property so long as they are the owners.  They are the one's who were able to kick Metro out after 55-60 years of occupation.  New Plan tried for the better part of a decade and were unsuccessful due to the city/county trying to enforce "Ghost" laws that said

1) No banners/signs hanging in front of any establishments

2) The (60) year old WHP sign on Glenway is "too" tall

Metro would not help in paying for the pavement that the buses tear up.

Centro was willing to take to court.

I ate lunch at the Gold Star there at the site and it looks like they are putting the walls and stuff up for the Target. Still a big mess though.

^ Agree with you on that Jmeck!  More proof of that in a moment.

These are some updates on the remodel up at the Plaza!  Includes new light pole, curb rehabilitation, paving, re-EAFing of existing structures, new signage at entrances, and the new Target.

Marty's Plaza Barber Shop is a bonus!!!  (Old Italian Barber who is a class act!)  Been their forever and still holding on strong through the change!!

The Marathon gas station at Western Hills Plaza was demolished.  I was driving down Glenway today and noticed how much nicer Western Hills Plaza looks without the station on an outlot.  Western Hills Plaza itself was looking amazing!

Target to open two local stores

http://cincinnati.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/stories/2009/03/02/daily30.html

Retail chain Target is opening two prototype stores in Greater Cincinnati on March 4, as part of a 27-store opening nationwide.

The stores, one in South Lebanon and the other in Western Hills, will employ 150 to 250 each, though the Western Hills store, at 6150 Glenway Ave., is relocating from just down the street. The South Lebanon store is off Interstate 71 at Route 48.

...

This place looks great!!  I made a trip up tonight and the whole plaza parking lot was fuller than I've ever seen it before.  Stopped in and talked to management in Staples and they said they are now tied with their Florence store for being the most profitable store in a 5 state region.  I was shocked!! Even beating the Kenwood store was surprising to me.    And with Target now open, and even that much more foot traffic............... well, things are definitely looking up for the Westside these days!!

Now all we need is a streetcar!!!

Target symbolizes turnaround at plaza

By Kurt Backscheider • [email protected] • March 5, 2009

Jim McNulty said the Westwood community has been looking forward to the revitalization of the Western Hills Plaza for quite some time.

The wait is over.

The new 137,500-square-feet Target store is open, culminating a five-year, $58 million investment in Westwood by Centro Properties Group.

...

^ Yeah, I saw this a couple of weeks ago... this whole area looks really great.

Is that a left-sided Target (i.e. most of the store is off to your left when you walk in)? I can't stand right-sided Target's - they feel like Walmarts. Cbus has almost all right-sided Targets. Crazy . . . I was crazy once.

Self diagnosis?  :wink2:

Pretty muchl.
