I remember as a high school student passing through the campus area  on a school bus in transit to a sporting event in Indiana observing the area  and environment  surrounding the University  of Miami. This place had a weird vibe to it.   It was a beautiful place but the overall vibe of the environment seemed to be artificial and plastic.  To me at age 17 it had the vibe of a dead 55+  sterile gated community.

It is Miami University.  The University of Miami is in Florida.

They did a complete renovation on MapleStreet Station dining hall, built in 2014 with seven standalone restaurants, back in 2016/2017.

It has been renamed MapleStreet Commons.

They converted four of the restaurants to a large buffet dining hall.

The former New York style pizza restaurant was converted into a convenience store market.

I'm not quite sure what happened to the former Starbucks & sandwich shop, and

The reason for the renovation wasn't because of aesthetics, it was because they couldn't get enough students to work the seven different fast-casual restaurants inside the dining hall.

Having worked there for a while, I can say staffing was a nightmare... the food concepts were way too elaborate (labor heavy) and expensive to work for the student base.

It was $10 gourmet hamburgers, fancy coffee drinks, Winans chocolates, artisan deli/grill sandwiches, etc.

The food, despite the price, was great quality and delicious. In a way it's a shame it's gone, the menu was very innovative.

But there's no way you can make a place work when you're running a skeleton crew with sky high food prices.

8 figures and a building that looks like a suburban hotel. Hot stuff.

^Right on point.  And unfortunately it is going in a prominent location on Talawanda on the site of the old Swing Hall.  And I was under the impression that they were going to incorporate the old Swing Hall cupola on any new build at that location.  Guess not.

Should be interesting to see if this is the final design or just for fundraising efforts.

The stone surrounds, columns and other historic details were salvaged from Swing. When Withrow was demo'd and rebuilt as a residence hall we tried to salvage the cupola as well but it basically fell apart when it was lifted so Miami gave up on that idea for Swing. I'm not involved in this project (unfortunately) and it looks like they aren't re-using any of the Swing building components in this criteria design, but that might be on the Tallawanda facing facade (we are seeing the 'back' from the brick pedestrian circle). Hopefully the final architect starts from scratch or at least tweaks this, because the criteria design is pretty un-inspired and un-specific to Miami. As usual go completely modern or completely historic, because this looks like a Miller Valentine office building from any suburb around SW Ohio.

image.png.25f9c15e1e2ebbc721fc8d07f273e30f.png

^This visual reminds me of that annoying parking lot on the site of the old Tallawanda Hall (and Tuffy's).  I wish they would finally develop it as it is such a prominent site on High Street.

By the way, does anybody know if this "data science building" is actually the STEM building the administration was talking about a while back or is that going to be a separate project.  My guess this IS the STEM project as they are also soon breaking ground on a huge Health Building on South Campus and I cannot believe they have the $$ for three separate projects.

I note that this McVey guy graduated a year after me.  Now I am feeling all sorts of pressure to donate 20 million as well.  There go my yacht purchase this year.

Miami University plans $45M renovation in step toward 'humanities corridor'

Miami University plans to renovate one of its largest general education buildings as part of an ongoing strategy to align its academic programming into "corridors of excellence."

Documents filed with the state indicate Miami will invest $45 million to renovate Bachelor Hall, which houses the English, mathematics and speech pathology and audiology departments, as well as the Humanities Center and the American Cultures and English program for international students.

The three-story, 111,000-square-foot building will be reconfigured to create more flexible spaces and make better use of square footage. Bachelor Hall currently has 23 classrooms and 181 offices, and nearly 13,000 students took classes there in the past year, according to Miami.

The renovation of Bachelor Hall is an early step toward realizing a humanities corridor — part of a university-wide push to coalesce synergistic programs into "corridors of excellence" through construction, renovation and department moves.

An early glimpse at Miami University's first new academic building in more than a decade

Miami University is making headway on a $96 million health sciences building at its Oxford campus.

Preconstruction services began in December 2020 for the 165,000-square-foot clinical health sciences and wellness facility, which will include three wings that connect academic programs to clinics, offices, labs, lounges, an on-site café and an innovation center.

It will also be part of Miami's health corridor, creating the university's first "corridor of excellence" — a campus-wide initiative that aims to coalesce synergistic programs and promote cross-divisional partnerships through new construction, renovation and department moves.

Budget approved for construction of $58M on-campus building

Miami University officials have put a price tag on a planned new building on campus, one that got a major push last year with a historic $20 million donation from an alumnus.

Miami’s board of trustees Friday approved the construction budget for a new data science building, authorizing $58 million for the project. The new facility will house departments and programs related to analytics and data science, business opportunities for non-business students and a center for cybersecurity.

The facility will be named for Rick McVey, who donated $20 million toward its construction in October, one of the top-five largest single gifts in Miami’s history, officials said. McVey is a 1981 Miami graduate and founder of MarketAxess, a New York-based financial tech company.

I am still not crazy about this design-especially as a replacement for Swing Hall- but I believe somebody on the forum (or I read somewhere else) that this is the rear of the building and not the side facing Talawanda.  If this is true I would like to see the Talawanda elevation.

I'd that is the east side of the building, I wonder why they wouldn't have it connect directly with the buildings right next to it that house similar disciplines?

I don't like the design either, they should stick to the classic windows / design, that's just the way Miami's campus is set up and that's what works. That building looks more like the Goggin or the Rec than an academic building. Also I'm concerned that they cut down too many trees when they do these new buildings.

One good thing I can say about this is I think the location is good. I've thought for a while that Miami's campus is experiencing sprawl and that academic buildings in particular should be close to the center, not on the outskirts like some of the stuff they've done recently.

That whole area has to look way different now that Withrow's also gone, haven't been down there in years.

Edited by mu2010

I prefer this building being separate from the neighboring buildings. The Benton/Garland/Engineering complex is already bulky.

The new Withrow has a pretty solid design. Hopefully this building will look more like a Withrow or Swing than the current rendering.

Withrow Hall re-used many pieces of stone, window openings and facade pieces from the original Withrow Court which involved some tricky details and structural support (which is why it looks good from Talawanda). I know Miami salvaged pieces of stone and facade from Swing Hall but I don't see any of that being used so far in the renderings of McVey hall.

Edited by ucgrady

^Yes, the repurposed stone helped create a much better facade for Withrow. But even if you didn't have the reused stone in the center bay of the building, the rest of the building is well done and classic Miami. If they slap reused pieces of Swing onto this new design, it would fail.

Miami University seeks bids for $62M Bachelor Hall renovation project

The Dayton area's largest university is seeking bids for a massive renovation project at one of its academic buildings. The $62 million project is part of the university's alignment of academic programs into "corridors of excellence."

Miami University in Oxford has filed a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) design-build contract with the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission for renovations to Bachelor Hall. A similar RFQ was submitted last summer, but at the time the project held a $45 million price tag. The renovation is now being rebid at the new cost, which is nearly 38% higher.

Built in 1979 and located at 301 S. Patterson Ave., Bachelor Hall has not been renovated and has not received any significant reinvestment since it opened, according to the RFQ filing. The 111,000-square-foot facility is a general education building with 23 classrooms and 181 offices.

Miami University debuts $96M health sciences building on Oxford campus

Miami University is slowly opening the doors to a newly constructed $96 million facility on its Oxford campus, the school’s first new academic building since the Farmer School of Business opened in late 2009.

Construction on the Clinical Health Sciences and Wellness building, located at 421 S. Campus Ave., is complete and departments are now starting to make their moves into the new space, bringing to close a $96 million project that dates back to 2019.

At 165,000 square feet, the three-story facility will serve as the new home for the university’s employee health center and student health services and will also house multiple academic programs, including nursing, physician associate studies and speech pathology and audiology – bringing many different groups together.

^Given the location of  the building, this would have been the perfect opportunity for the university to finally go with a sharp, more contemporary building minus the red brick-maybe something glass and steel.  I have always been an advocate of trying something like this on buildings developed on the fringes of the campus, something similar to the art museum which is now approaching 50 years old.  That said, would not want to go that route in the center of campus.  Might be too much of a clash.

I know it can be argued that this is more a contemporary building as it doesn't follow the modified Georgian architecture of the rest of campus, but the red brick doesn't take it far enough.

The new dining hall on Western campus is as wild as I want to get. Western seems like the area to get creative because it was not historically red brick Georgian and there are already several modern structures.

@ink do you have a pic of the new dining hall on Western?  I only remember Alexander Dining Hall on Western which was pretty modern compared to the rest of the campus in the 70s.  It was my dining hall sophomore year as i was "stuck" on Western that year even though I was not part of the Western program.

$58M academic building opens to students at university south of Dayton

A $58 million project adding an academic building to one of the region’s largest universities has opened its doors to students. The building offers the latest technology to expand programs in financial technology and cybersecurity.

Miami University has unveiled its newest academic building, the McVey Data Science building, to students and faculty at the Oxford campus. The 92,000-square-foot facility offers 14 classrooms, 12 conference and seminar rooms and 88 offices, as well as research and project areas.

The building was envisioned to be a place to foster transdisciplinary research, a forum for industry partners to connect, and a venue for instruction, student activities and increased collaboration.

For what it's worth, the final product looks better than the rendering, but it is no Swing Hall.

I've seen this building in person (driving down the street in front of it), and while it's not the most amazing buiding I've ever seen, I feel it looks better from street view than the aerial image posted above.

The roof is just too huge. All the other roofs on campus are either that tall but  broken up with dormers, or it stops at a parapet hiding a flat roof behind with equipment. Both of those roof types are actually visible in that image, but this roof is just huge and it looks like a McMansion pyramid-style roof when driving by.

Miami University plans first solar arrays as part of decarbonization push on Oxford campus

Miami University is planning for its first renewable energy installation on campus as the school continues a decade-long push toward carbon neutrality. The total project cost is described as being upwards of $2.25 million, according to the school’s qualifications request for a design-build contract.

Miami is planning a solar energy array on its Western Campus in a large open field behind Hillcrest Hall and a geothermal energy plant. The 3-acre field is home to 600 geothermal wells the university installed beginning in 2014 to cut down on its carbon footprint. The array would be expected to produce one megawatt of energy under ideal conditions.

Miami is also considering a three-megawatt solar canopy over the parking lot on the west side of Millett Hall, the school’s basketball arena.

Miami University opens $58 million McVey Data Science building: 'It's just amazing'

Miami University President Greg Crawford came to Rick McVey toward the end of 2020 with a big pitch for a bold step forward.

Crawford, who assumed his role in 2016, had just finished the rollout of Miami’s latest strategic plan, representing a major shift in priorities. The plan’s executive summary noted with stark candor, “Miami cannot afford every program or service we might wish to provide. Every decision we make must be fully informed by the financial implications.” The school turned to research and innovation to propel it into a new era.

McVey, a graduate in the class of ’82, wrote the book on innovation in the financial services industry. In the quarter century since he founded MarketAxcess, the firm has used automation and data-backed algorithms to become a leading fixed-income electronic trading platform for institutional investors and dealers.
