Thoughts/Benefits of a landmark tower in Mt Adams in Cincinnati

I visited San Francisco over the summer and went up Coit Tower.

When I was there I couldn't help but think how cool it would be for Cincinnati to have something similar to this up on Mt. Adams that could be a tourist destination where you could go high up and overlook the entire region.  It is something to be on an office building (Carew) and overlook the region, but when you can look down on the CBD, it's something entirely different altogether.

One potential scenario I had was having an incline leading to the tower from parking in Broadway commons since Mt Adams is too dense for tourism parking.  Any thoughts?

This is a fantastic idea.  The only issue would be the location and the logistics getting to and from.  Very cool idea.

I agree, that would be great.  In fact, the view of the city coming across the Bay Bridge with Telegraph Hill above and to the right always reminds me of coming into Cincinnati across the Brent Spence with Mt. Adams situated similarly.  It's hard to explain, I'll see if I can dig up a picture.

The main problem is that, sadly, Coit Tower is a relic of another era when philanthropy had a much more profound effect on the public realm than it does today.

COIT Tower is amazing. It always bothered me though that the windows at the top have that cheap glass over them.

Anyway, I think that would look awesome in Mt Adams. A few problems though: No place to put it, somebody would have to do what was done w/ COIT Tower and donate their estate to have it built, and I don't think there are any estates large enough in Mt Adams. It's pretty dense. Also, parking is already a nightmare up there. Of course it's a nightmare at COIT Tower too....

Immaculata is in the best place to build such a tower, but there's no way that church is going anywhere.

Nice idea though.

I vote we tear down the ugly Highland Towers and put something nice in its place.

Is that the one with The Celestial? That building is butt ugly.

Also, there's a fairly large surface lot across the street, I guess we could build it there. But if you put a COIT size tower there the top would be just a bit taller than the Monastery further up the hill.

Isn't the art museum doing something like that with a big flower or something?

Haven't heard of that, do you have any more information?

Sadly no, I can't find a rendering it is part of the 125 million expansion plan.

Yeah, the art museum is planning a relatively tall "tulip" shaped tower as part of massive expansion.

I have no idea if the economy has stalled their plans, but they talk about it like they are ready to proceed.

Personally, I think it looks butt-ugly. However, given the height and location, it should be quite a landmark. It will have insane river and city views, if nothing else.

The water tower in Eden Park used to be accessible to walk to the top as an attraction.  It is noted for instance in the WPA guide of the 1940's.  I would think an cost effective solution would be just to re-open it.  The problems would be security, loitering, etc.

I think the tower will be cool if it is not made out of brown balsa wood as shown in the picture

Yeah I went to an information session with the CEO of the Art Museum where he gave many, many more details about the project than what is available online or at the museum, and I can not wait for that expansion to happen.  If it does happen, it could drastically change not only the CAM, but also Mt. Adams as a whole.

 a terminal tower tribute would be great :-D
