This "scandal" has no legs, by the way.

It will in due time. Trust. That and more. It's not a leftist thing; Believe it or not, Boehner has Republican enemies as well.

How do you distance yourself from someone you were never close to?

You assume too much about me Hts.

Any timeline/tips would be appreciated. If the Dems cared about the country they'd make it sooner rather than later but they don't so they'll wait until he's comfortable and then torpedo him for their own political benefit. Isn't politics great?

Or it could all be bunk....

"October surprise" ... It will be this month. (Before the election. Before he is "safe".)

My late grandmother had a story that she knew a veteran she played cards with that knew/saw Bob Dole step into the line of fire for the sole purpose of getting sent home.  Now I believe this claim only a hair more than I believed my grandmother when she first started telling me that story during Clinton v. Dole.

Scrabble, the point of provocative questions such as that of the blogger's, is that it can launch investigations. The NY Times chose to do an expose on him. Depending on who is willing to speak, it could be a John McCain type of scandal (meh, who really cares) or a Tiger Woods type of scandal (you're screwed). Personally, I hate Boehner. From what I know about him, I honestly think he deserves to be in prison. The fact that people didn't seem to care much when it was exposed that he rents his DC apartment from a lobbyist who tried to influence legislation that he actually promoted, kind of scares me.

Boehner to fly commercial between DC and Ohio

Posted by mrulon November 10th, 2010, 1:26 pm

West Chester’s Rep. John Boehner may be in line to become House Speaker, but that doesn’t mean he intends to take every perk that comes with the new job. He’ll get a $30,000 salary increase and become 2nd in line for the presidency (right after Vice President Joe Biden). But Boehner told reporters today that he’ll keep flying commercial between Ohio and Washington.

“I have talked to our security folks about the security that is involved in my new role,” Boehner told reporters at a Capitol news conference today. “But over the last 20 years, I have flown back and forth to my district on a commercial aircraft and I’m going to continue to do that.”

Since Sept. 11, House speakers have used military jets to fly between Washington and their home districts. Current Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi travels between Washington and California in an Air Force Gulfstream V. Before her, Republican Speaker Dennis Hastert used Air Force planes to travel between Washington and Illinois.

Pelosi had requested a larger airplane for her flights home so that she wouldn’t have to stop and refuel. According to Judicial Watch, a watchdog group, the Gulfstream V plane used by Pelosi cost $2.1 million over two years, which amounts to about $28,000 per flight between California and Washington.

Pelosi abused the private jet, running up tabs in excess of $1M a year; this is a great public relations strategy for Boehner.

"mostly false"

Of course that wouldn't stop the Enquirer.....

But is that part true?

As much as I hate to stick up for her, it is not entirely true according to factcheck.org.  It was the sergeant in arms, not Pelosi, that requested the aircraft capable of a direct flight from DC to Cali.  Also, it is worth noting that the Speaker of the House's use of the jet stems from the aftermath of 9/11 and was instituted for security reasons with the first one to use it the Republican Speaker at the time.  I assume the reason some thought security was an issue is because the Speaker becomes President if anything happens to the President and VP.

She could have said no, right?

Probably.... just like the President could say no to flying on Air Force One.... or a member of Congress can decline his/her publicly funded health care

She could have said no, right?

She could have, but since the security professionals seem to think that she should be taking a military plane, it would seem to me that the responsible thing for her to do is to take a military plane.  Otherwise, she's not only risking her own safety, but also that of those who are riding the civilian plane with her.

Are the conservatives suddenly the ones forgetting that we are at war with the terrorists?

They tend to forget a lot of things...like how we got into this recession in the first place.

I remember that's why I'm in the Tea Party instead of the Democratic Party.

John Boehner: The next speaker

Republicans have chosen Boehner to lead the House of Representatives. Who is he, and how will will he exert his influence?

POSTED ON NOVEMBER 26, 2010, AT 10:45 AM

Where is Boehner from?

He grew up in Reading, Ohio, the second of 12 children in a working-class Catholic family. His father ran a tavern where Boehner (pronounced BAY-ner) did chores. The family had little money—the whole brood shared a single bathroom—but Boehner was industrious at an early age, waking up in darkness to deliver Sunday papers and still make it to early morning Mass. “I went to high school and met a bunch of guys from other parts of town who were clearly a lot more affluent than what I grew up in,” he recalled, “and it just opened my eyes that there was just more out there.”

I have a group pic of them all together but doubt it would be appreciated.

So that's how its pronounced.

The segment aired last night.  Am I the only one who thinks Boehner has just got to stop crying on national TV?

It works for Glenn Beck.

I think it's pretty great that Ohio is home to the Speaker of the House. Now we need to produce a President...haven't done that in a long time

If Obama and Biden keel over, you will get your wish. (Yuck.)

If Obama and Biden keel over, you will get your wish. (Yuck.)

True but I'd prefer an actual candidate from Ohio. When was the last time Ohio had a strong horse in the race? When was the last time an Ohioan won a major party nomination?

The 9th, 18th, 20th, 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 29th Presidents were from Ohio (at least originally), the last one being Harding 90 years ago.  We had quite a run for a while there.  I don't know that we have had a candidate since then.  I can't think of one.

Yeah I think the crying is kind of weird.  Either he is doing it to look like cares about the issues which I think would be dishonest and a bit ridiculous, or he really does care about the issues so much that he cries which bothers me because he can't control himself.  I watched the 60 minutes segment and he was balling his eyes out.  I guess it is nice to see a politician with a human side but in order to govern he will need to cool it on the tears a bit.

I also take issue with his american dream story that a lot of Republican politicians use for the reason why they should govern the way they do.  "He came from nothing and became speaker of the house through hard work and dedication."  The attitude is that because I made a fortune after coming from a modest background, everyone should too and if you don't you're lazy.  I think the American Dream is kind of dead and it takes a lot of luck along with the hard work to become really successful.  These guys don't admit the luck part and don't care for programs to help those that haven't been able to achieve the dream.

The 9th, 18th, 20th, 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 29th Presidents were from Ohio (at least originally), the last one being Harding 90 years ago. We had quite a run for a while there. I don't know that we have had a candidate since then. I can't think of one.

The 9th president wasn't from Ohio. William Henry Harrison was from Virginia. He was elected from Ohio, but if Ohio claims him on that count, we can't claim Benjamin Harrison (who was elected from Indiana) or Ulysses S. Grant (who was elected fom Illinois). Ohio likes to claim eight presidents, but the reality is that seven were born here and six were elected from here.

Sorry for getting off topic and being pedantic.

Hopefully, he and the rest of the people in charge, regardless of party affiliation, will finally get our country back on the right footing.  Only time will tell.

John Boehner became Speaker Boehner yesterday.  And he bravely kept control of his emotions.  Well, mostly...

But he regained his composure in time to receive his specially made oversized gravel.

We need to double the security detail for Obama and.... wait... oh crap.  Triple Obama's security detail.

It's so funny to hear the mockery and ridicule with which liberals attack John Boehner for crying. Hasn't this been the the same crowd who's been telling us for ages that it's okay for men to stop acting like macho stereotypes and show their true emotions? Why the double standard?

I have said nothing.  But I suppose its the same double standard which would have led you to attack Obama if he cried every other time he made a public appearance.  I can see the headlines now.... there probably would be reports that he was born a woman (in Kenya, of course)

It's ok that he cries. It's an emotional moment. But he cries at the drop of a hat....literally. Go ahead, drop your hat and see what happens.

I just think it's funny that he cries so much. And that he's orange. I'm petty like that.

I watched the 60 minutes segment and he was balling his eyes out.

LOL. Balling=having sex.  Bawling=crying.  If he was balling, even I would have tuned in. I've never seen an Oompa Loompa having sex!

In all fairness I'm liberal and think men should stoically repress their emotions, bottling them up tightly, till they explode at an inopportune moment like a company picnic or a wedding ceremony.

Wasn't that a slang word in the '70s? I've only heard that word used like that in old movies.

I thought balling meant playing basketball...which would have been interesting to see as well. 'Daaaaaaaaymmm...Boehner's got some ups!'

I think you can take him AJ he smokes at least a pack a day.

We agree yet again!

Haha, well played.

I see Boehner teared up again - which I don't mind in this situation.  But this makes 5 solid public cries since his Election night speech.

A new Quinnipiac Poll of Ohio voters was unveiled yesterday.  Among the many opinions gathered on national and state office holders was whether the new House speaker's tears are a sign of strength or a sign of weakness.  Overall, 36% thought Boehner's tears were a "sign of strength", 27% thought his tears were a "sign of weakness" and another 37% were undecided.

However, men and women in the poll had very different responses.  Only 27% of men found Boehner's crying to be a sign of strength, while 34% of men found his crying a weakness.  But 44% of women perceived his tears as a strength, while 20% of women didn't.

Which inspired the following headlines around the nation: (links to full article below)

Who cares? Let the man cry.

At least no one can say he is an emotionless robot politician. Even if he's wrong most of the time.

According to some national polls, his approval rating skyrocketed recently.

Maybe he's better than Nancy...? That's not saying much though.

Those Fox News viewer polls aren't very accurate.
