Fountains again draw ire

Korean War vets, MetroParks spar over damage to memorial

By Jim DeBrosse

Dayton Daily News

DAYTON | The RiverScape fountains, whose errant spray is already the focus of a $3.3 million lawsuit, may be menacing the nearby memorial for Korean War veterans.

Lime deposits from the fountain spray are blotting out the names of missing soldiers chiseled into the granite and brick along the walkway near the north end of Riverside Bridge, Korean War veterans complain. Questions surrounding fountains

By Rob Modic

Dayton Daily News

DAYTON | What was the point of the $7.5 million downtown Five Rivers Fountain when it opened five years ago?

During the next three weeks, a Montgomery County jury will ponder that question and others in a contentious lawsuit brought by the county against the designer and a contractor:

• Was it a dismal embarrassment, as county attorneys claim, a failed attempt at "the world's biggest fountain"?

• Or was it a surprising success, as attorneys for the designer, EDAW Inc., propose, a sparkling diamond in the constellation of RiverScape?
