Posted March 2, 200916 yr Ok. I have to write a research paper for an english class. One of the options was to "explore your major." While I am not a urban planning major, that is the option and focus I chose since I will be in the major next year. I need some assistance, though. Since it is a research paper, I need sources (books, news articles, academic websites). Do any of you know of any good sources that would give me information on what an Urban Planning major entails, what job opportunities it allows, what the employment opportunities are like, etc. I'm also hard pressed to find any historical materials on the topic as it related to how the field has developed over time. Finally, if anyone has any suggestion as to an individual at UC whom I should interview for this, that would be greatly appreciated also. Thanks!
March 2, 200916 yr Search through the Planning Magazine archives (not sure if they're all access or not). http://planning.org/planning/index.htm As for the individual, are you looking for a faculty member or will a student suffice?

Actually, a student near or post-graduation would be better for this because they can offer the perfect viewpoint for my paper.
March 2, 200916 yr If you want you could talk with me as I'm graduating in June, or I can recommend a couple of great people for you to talk to.
March 2, 200916 yr I had a book that details the historical study of urban form, and why planning is important. I took this back in undergrad, and it's stored back at my parents home. I'll give them a ring tomorrow and see if they'll be willing to find it and give the name and author. It's a book that's pretty easy to find in any library. You should also read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Death_and_Life_of_Great_American_Cities You'll find a lot of great information for your paper by just skimming.
March 3, 200916 yr The problem with searching for "urban planning" anywhere on the internet is that you get a lot of stuff that actually has nothing to do with Urban Planning. Thanks for the help so far. If anyone has anymore ideas or better ideas for search keywords, I'd gladly accept the assistance.
