There are Mermaid Ave. and Mermaid Ave II (wouldn't be surprised if there are other tributes to Gutherie over the years, just that I'm familiar with the Bragg/Wilco material)

I'll get my mits on 'em pronto. Springsteen recently put out a Seegar tribute. His live version of "This land..." is chill-inducing. When I'm King of America it will be the national anthem. Until then, all I can do is convince my kids that it already is.

I just got the Seeger tribute album today.  Only listened to the CD, so I haven't seen any of the DVD stuff (yet), but yeah, it's great.  The "My Oklahoma Home" live is far better than the album version, but the "Oh, Mary, Don't You Weep" on the album is just top notch.  Old Dan Tucker, Erie Canal, Pay Me My Money Down - fantastic.

Hmm...looking at the track listing, "This Land Is Your Land" doesn't show up on the DVD either...is that just from the concert, or did he put that tune out somewhere else?

I recall hearing Springsteen's cover of Guthrie's "This is your land" on the 3-LP 1975-85 Live collection. That's an interesting song to google the lyrics on. Verses you never learned in elementary school (assuming you attended in the 70s when hippie teachers ruled). The original manuscript actually had the refrain "God blessed America for me." Who knew? Here's my favorite verse:

"Was a high wall there that tried to stop me

A sign was painted said: Private Property,

But on the back side it didn't say nothing --

[God blessed America for me.]"

Check out this link: http://www.geocities.com/Nashville/3448/thisland.ra It's clip of Alan Lomax interviewing Guthrie. Also check out this page in general: http://www.edu-cyberpg.com/Music/woodieguthrie.html.

Their is rumored to be another CDs worth of Wilco/Billy Bragg material on that Woody Guthrie collaboration, but it hasnt been released, nor are their any boots available either as far as I know.

A good Woody Guthrie tribute/cover CD is one I picked up years ago. A bunch of Austin singer/songwriters did this live gig at a place called La Zona Rosa, doing covers.  Some pretty good versions on that, esp. of his "Pretty Boy Floyd".

The crack of ol' Dan's whip!

So, is the song any better than the half-ass whisky?  I haven't heard it.

Depends on what your musical tastes are...I think it's fantastic!

Best introduction ever.  Welcome!

I rather liked my time in Kentucky.

We know, it is obvious from your posts.

Wow.  I just did a little research but couldn't get to the bottom of this.  When I read the name on a Bruce Springstein track list I assumed he wrote a song about the diluted whiskey, not that the diluted whiskey was named after such an old tune.  They're absolutely still making that stuff, I had it most recently about 18 months ago.  I couldn't find anything about it searching on the net, I don't know what parent company makes it.  The illustration on the bottle is the profile of a carriage driver whipping a team of horses and said something like "Diluted Kentucky Bourbon bottled in Cleveland, OH".

I did a study abroad program and then an archaeological dig in Greece while in college; I lived there for six months. After I graduated, I went to Edinburgh for six months to do the BUNAC work-exchange program.

I'm from a bad part of Dayton called Dayton :[

If you're looking for another sign of the accumulation of wealth outside of Detroit proper, this is one.

For the record, Detroit, Hamtramck, Dearborn and the Pointes are still 313. Even living here in the 614, I intend to keep my 313 phone number. You know, to remind people what a hard rolla' I am.

Yeah, because Dearborn, Hamtramck, and the POINTES are all "hard rolla."

Fairborn is my 'foster' home.  I was born and raised in eastern Pennsylvania (E-A-G-L-E-S! Go Eagles!) and will probably never consider Ohio my 'true' home.  I'm not in a hurry to leave here (good job, low cost of living); however, no reasonable offers will be refused

Other locations that I've called 'home' at one time or another:

San Antonio, TX

Biloxi, MS

Bedford, UK

Misawa, Japan

Carovigno, Italy

Hanover, MD
