Fairborn is my 'foster' home.  I was born and raised in eastern Pennsylvania (E-A-G-L-E-S! Go Eagles!) and will probably never consider Ohio my 'true' home.  I'm not in a hurry to leave here (good job, low cost of living); however, no reasonable offers will be refused

Other locations that I've called 'home' at one time or another:

San Antonio, TX

Biloxi, MS

Bedford, UK

Misawa, Japan

Carovigno, Italy

Hanover, MD

I was in Misawa for two years. 1987 - 1989

July 83 - Jan 86 & Sep 01 to Jun 04 for me...worked up on 'the Hill'...

It was my wife's idea

It is also referred to as 'Square-born' and 'Still-born' by some of my co-workers...if I truly cared, there might be fighting words exchanged :argue:

There is also "Square-tucky".

Little Kentucky in Fairborn.  Yeah, I actually know where thats at.

I've heard Fairboring before, too.

The place does have a certain 'realness' character to it, thought.  My barber is in Fairborn and he has some real characters come through (this is one of those barber shops where people hang out at).

Jeff,

Is that the barber over by 'Five Points'?  I've never been there (used to get my 'GI cuts' on base and now I visit Super Cuts) but I heard it was a real 'throwback' kind of place (reminicent of Floyd's shop from 'Mayberry RFD').

Cat,

The only place I've heard of (other than 'Ken') with 'tucky stuck on the end is 'Huber-tucky' (aka Huber Heights).

Fairborn ( http://www.reference.com/browse/wiki/Fairborn,_Ohio ) is rather spread out.  I live out in Rona Hills--outside of I-675.  The town covers almost all of the immediate perimeter outside WPAFB and includes Wright State University all the way up to the border with Beavercreek.

There are some parts of the town that scare me (Dayton-Yellow Springs Road near 'Apartment-tropolis', some of the residences back behind the old Palmer South Elementary School--I believe it's now called the 'Intermediate School').

The downtown has a certain character about it, especially around Halloween (Foy's goes all out with decorating their stores and the building ledges overlooking the main street).  After living 10 years of my adult life overseas, this annual dose of 'uber-kitch' reminds me of the things I did without while serving my country...

You're new here.  You missed our -tucky discussion from several months back.

Every Ohio city has a community that gets "glossed" with -tucky (Strongsville=Strongstucky near Cleveland; Groveport=Grovetucky near Columbus; Kentucky=Kentucky near Cincinnati).

Magyar,

I grew up in eastern Pennsylvania so our 'whipping' state was New Jersey ("you from Joisey...I'm from Joisey...what exit?")

My wife grew up in Illinois so they picked on the 'Hoosiers'...

isnt everybody's whipping state Jersey?  I am from Dc and it sure was where I came from...then the runner up was WV.

No, this one is in the old part of Fairborn.  The barber is also a sort of trader or pawnbroker and he sometimes has to take a break from cutting my hair when someone comes in wanting to sell something or buy something.

He does a good job though, so he gets a lot of buisness.

I should bump my Fairborn @ Halloween thread

Magyar - the times they are a-changin'

Since Strongsville is now yuppie-town, it is common to make fun of Brunswick as Brunstucky. (Not uppity Brunswick Hills, just Brunswick)

Those in the Westlake/Avon area surely know about North Ridge-tucky and Sheff-tucky.

Don't know what the east side equivalent is? Chardon? Middlefield?

Although I read this forum everyday, I have never responded to any threads.  So, here it is:

Born: Canton, moved to Pennsylvania, back to Ohio (Columbus) where I lived until finishing high school.  Moved to the Netherlands for college, stayed a year and a half and then back to Ohio and OSU.  After about 2 years I moved to California, where I have lived ever since--first in LA and for the last 20 years (yikes) in San Francisco.  I come back to visit Columbus every two years or so.

That's it in a nutshell!

My wife grew up in Illinois so they picked on the 'Hoosiers'...

Hoosiers, especially the southern ones, tell Kentucky jokes.

Don't tell me.  Tell MayDay.  He was the one who first droped the -tucky reference on Brunswick

Neither.  East Claridon. ;-)

SFSpike - you wouldn't happen to have any 20+ year old pictures of Columbus floating around that you could scan and post, would you?  'Cause that'd pretty much just rock the hell out!

Oh, and welcome, welcome!

The world stops one after Cove Avenue in Lakewood, imho.

Wow, there are more Michigan exiles than folks from Dayton, Akron or Toledo.

Me

Detroit (still registered to vote here) > Ypsilanti, MI for college > Lakewood (for more schoolin')

Welcome to Lakewood, Nerd, and glad to see your first post on the forum. But may I recommend that you come up with a more flattering name?!

no, he really is a nerd.

Saginaw, MI for most of my life

Ann Arbor for the past 4 years since I go to school there.  :

Unfortunately I've lived in Canton, MI my whole life.

^why are you guys hanging out on UrbanOhio?  Not that I mind, it just seems odd that some Michiganders would take interest in Ohio.

^You need some Ohio pride, wimwar.

I grew up in Dayton, well Trotwood actually, and lived there till I was 27. I even went to the University of Dayton. I've lived in Philly (Ardmore) for the past 13 years but my Mom still lives in the Dayton area.

Gotta be careful about Michiganders; they may be spies plotting to take back Toledo.

I, on the other hand, am plotting to have the Indiana portion of the Maumee River basin, including Fort Wayne, annexed onto Ohio.

It is interesting to see the fairly large Michigan presence in that poll....there are more Michiganders than the Dayton/Akron people combined..

Because there is no urbanmichigan.com.  So we are stuck at this place.

OK, now be honest here...do you guys look at Toledo in the same way Voldemort looks at Wormtail?

Makes you want to buy the Harry Potter (book package and) special edition DVD collection, right?

We don't want Toledo.  We might steal a few of its museums, but that's about it

In architecture school, our class is designing housing (fictional of course) for Toledo.  I made a 3d model of the city, and I'm almost done.  But Toledo is really bothering me right now.

Lived on Columbus' far West/South-West Side for most of my life.  (Galloway, Hilliard, and Grove City where my parents now reside).  Lived the year of 1993 in Athens Georgia.  Spent the last five years of my life in Athens, Ohio and I am now in Oxford.

Live in NYC, I've been here since June 1989.  I wasted no time getting the hell out!

Yeesh, after 140 votes, I'm the only one who considers the greater Youngstown area to be "home"?  :|

Nope... Youngstown, Cleveland, Miami, and now Fort Lauderdale. Youngstown is home all though most of my life has been spent elsewhere.

Southeast Ohio must not have anyone interested in Ohio Cities. Marrietta and Portsmouth (and WV) have big 0s.

Well, out of 11.4MM+ people in the state, only 62K of them are in Washington County, and 77K of them in Scioto County...with only 108 votes from Oheesians so far, you'd only expect about one person total from both counties combined...so I guess it's not really all that surprising not seeing anyone from those areas...

There are a bunch of new forumers, so......Where is home??

^ ^

I lived for 18 years only an earshot from Portsmouth, Ironton, and Huntington, WV -- so I can count myself in that. I currently reside in Lexington, KY.

Well..... lol I was born in Newark, Delaware, moved to Washington, New Jersey when I was six and I pretty much grew up there.  I spent 13 years of my life there, I'm 19 now, 20 in november.  But now I live in Montoursville, PA, right outside of Williamsport, PA, the central hub of North Central Pennsylvania.  My mother grew up here so we moved here when my parents retired...

The Cleve since '84.

Kansas, New Jersey and Indiana before that. Ahh the memories..

I'm a native of North-Central Pennsylvania... though about 100 miles west of Williamsport in St. Marys... North-Central is a BIG region!  lol

I've lived in three spots in my entire life, and none of them were more than about 6 miles apart.

I'm representing Old Brooklyn (almost the Industrial Valley) here in Cleveland.

Ugh. I've lived everywhere in Cincinnati and Columbus :[

lol "and antibiotics"

lol "and antibiotics"

Jersey is gross - the place has a "state smell"  Those Bridge and Tunnel [AKA B&T's] people should be checked for communicable diseases at toll booths prior gaining access to the city.

meanwhile, someone on a New Jersey Forum is bashing Ohio as a conservative hick town farmland flyover country.
