It is common knowledge that Covered Bridge No. 17 on State Road in Ashtabula County will be the longest such span in the United States; fourth-longest in the world.

But the $5 million, 600-foot, four-span bridge project came off the drawing board with one more attribute, according to County Engineer Tim Martin...

I didn't know anyone built covered bridges anymore.  It sounds really cool, especially with the walkway on top.

Renderings are apparently close to being done, so hopefully there will be a pic to put up at some point.

Ashtabula county has several NEW covered bridges; the county engineer there likes them.  :-D

OK, the AP picked this up.  From 10/11/05:

Ohio county seeks to build longest covered bridge in U.S.

By the Associated Press

ASHTABULA | Ashtabula County, with more covered bridges than any other county in Ohio, hopes to add another distinction: the longest wooden covered bridge in the United States.

Officials say the 600-foot bridge could end up being the cornerstone of a budding tourist economy. Ashtabula County, located in the northeast corner of the state, has struggled for decades with high unemployment and the loss of industrial jobs...

Ashtabula spans expand their numbers

County's newest covered bridge will also be nation's longest

Tuesday, November 08, 2005

James Ewinger

Plain Dealer Reporter

Ohio's warm weather is ebbing away, but it's still high summer for the covered bridges of Ashtabula County.

Life, traffic and commerce still flow through them each day, just as they did in the 19th century.

Now, the county with the most working covered bridges in Ohio is about to trump itself, and the nation, by building the longest working covered bridge in the United States - 600 feet spanning the Ashtabula River...To reach this Plain Dealer reporter:

Sounds pretty cool to me! I have always liked the historic covered bridges of Ohio, I pass one every day on my way to Athens. I always think of the Winters River Bridge in Beatlejuice! And, the Y-Bridge used to be covered, way before my time however.

USAToday has this interesting article about cover bridges making a bit of a comeback.

<b>Plan: Nation's longest wooden covered bridge

Ohio engineer bridges past and present</b>

By Dennis Cauchon, USA TODAY

ASHTABULA, Ohio — When John Smolen was a young engineer, a high-ranking state highway official wanted him investigated for misuse of public funds. Smolen's crime: He planned to spend tax money on a new covered wooden bridge. "The guy was serious: He thought a wood bridge was so absurd that he wanted John Smolen charged with misusing public funds," says David Simmons, an engineering historian at the Ohio Historical Society.

Smolen, 59, can laugh about it now. He has helped design or build 14 covered bridges in Ohio and Michigan, the biggest boom in constructing old-style wooden bridges in more than 80 years...

Maybe this could help trim the cost of the I-75 Ohio River Bridge! :-D

Maybe this is what we should do with the I-90 Innerbelt bridge!  Now that'd be a long wooden bridge.

Yeah, then nobody could see Cleveland's skyline.

Great idea!

Ashtabula County’s newest covered bridge, and the nation’s longest, will be dedicated 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26.

The ceremony will be held at the southeast end of the bridge, with access off Plymouth Ridge Road. The Covered Bridge Festival Committee is holding the event, which is being underwritten by Lakeview Federal Credit Union.

A highlight of the event will be the official naming of the bridge, which spans the Ashtabula River on State Road. There is already a State Road covered bridge in the county.

The new bridge is 613 feet long and cost $8 million. It is No. 17 for Ashtabula County and the longest in the United States.
