I keep hearing on the news that there are some people mad at the mayor at want to have a special recall vote to kick him out of office. They even have websites. changeakronnow.com  akronwatch.org

Is this legit or what.?.

Good luck.  He's pretty entrenched, from what I hear.

Personally.. I think He's done a great job.. everyone has some flaws..

I kind of like him too.  Don't know much about Akron goings on, but I like the direction things are heading there.

He does the best with what he has.  He comes up with different ideas (sewer & college scholarships) to slow, I believe, the inevitable collapse of that city.  The guy leading the recall is an overly zealous litigator and a little off his rocker.

He also openly picks up chicks at bars, as I have seen him on a couple of occasions at Barley House with young girls all around him.

Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic admits he might be in the fight of his life to remain in office.

That fight begins this week, when Change Akron Now, the group seeking to have Plusquellic recalled, will begin circulating petitions.

Petitions filed to recall mayor

Supporters of the effort to recall Akron's mayor cheered as Warner Mendenhall carried a stack of petitions into City Hall on Friday afternoon.

''It feels very good!'' said Mendenhall, waving the petitions in the air as he stopped to talk to a group of journalists.

That is all Mendenhall does.  He was a waste at councilman, now all he does his waste tax payer dollars fighting "injustices".  Like his wife getting a speeding ticket from a speedzone cam, or trying to get rid of a horrible mayor who had done nothing but improve the community.

Akron's bond rating is Aa and it's debt to income ratio is over 40%.  I suppose Mendenhall won't be happy until the city is dying like Toledo and Youngstown.

Akron has made great strides under the leadership of Don Plusquellic. Akron is one of the best comeback stories in the state. Obviously not back yet, but definitely on it's way back. It is clear that this is a waste of time and money. What an ass whole!

I've known of Mendenhall for a long time, unfortunately. I knew Mendenhall before he was mayor of Silver Lake and fought a commuter train proposal with disgusting scare tactics and a costly legal fight he lost but that Silver Lake taxpayers had to pay for.

And now he's trying to rid of a mayor in mid-term. Why? What's the hurry? You remove elected officials in mid-term when they've been convicted of felonies, not because you don't like the job they're doing. That's what regular elections are for.

Instead, this recall election will cost Akron taxpayers a lot of money. A failed recall election of a Cleveland councilman in 2007 cost the City of Cleveland $47,000. This recall could easily cost Akron $100,000+. But this is more about Mendenhall, who wants to wreak havoc so he can attract attention and doesn't care that others will have to pay for his narcissism.

LOL!....You are worried about what it will COST the City of Akron for a recall???....LOL!

How about all the money Dandy Don has ALREADY cost the City Akron?!

Concerned,

If you are going to state your opinion, back it up with facts.  I am not saying you're wrong, but it would give you a touch of credibility.  If not, please post on "ohio.com."

Again I say........LOL!  Are you Mr. palijandro7 the website owner?  Dandy Don WASTED $760,000.00 to purchase the dump at Manchester Rd. and Carnegie Ave. formerly known as Youngs. Or did you not know that?.......LOL!

I actually like what Pasqually is doing. Akron is building.. what other city the size of Akron inthis country can say that. Most are on a decline.

Concerned...  glad your concerned.. but remember.. government is not perfect.

Recall leader has $169,000 in tax liens

He says they have nothing to do with campaign to remove mayor

Warner Mendenhall, the Akron attorney leading the effort to recall Mayor Don Plusquellic, has federal income tax liens that total almost $169,000, according to Internal Revenue Service documents filed with Summit County.

The IRS filed two liens against Mendenhall and his wife, Kelly — one in June 2006 for the tax periods from 1999 through 2004 and another in January 2009 for the tax periods from 2005 through 2007. The annual unpaid balances range from $5,504.41 to $61,441.95, according to the county documents.

Mendenhall offered the same explanation as he did when a $2,169.82 state income tax lien came to light a few weeks ago: He said he has a law practice and that some expenses, such as paying employees, aren't optional. He said he has tried to get a loan to pay the liens.

From the outside looking in, it seems that Akron is doing quite well for a city of it's size in the rust belt, and that the mayor is doing a good job. He seems like a Mayor Daley...gets things done, sometimes on the sly, but gets them done and leaves the general public feeling that it's all for the better....even if his tactics are somewhat heavy handed or shady.

Concerned....I tend to believe that the majority (older) population of Akron regard Young's as a landmark and does not want it torn down...which is a good political move for the mayor.  Even if it was a bad move...is it a reason to hang him?

This forum is not Ohio.com where one leaves an off the cuff remark just to incite an argument.  It is meant to facilitate a meaningful and insightful debate about the topic at hand.  Others may not agree with you, but if you have legitimate reasons for recall, we'd love to hear them.  And please refrain from over-using the LOL-ing...it's condescending and annoying.

Recall group falls short, will get more time for signatures

The group seeking the ouster of Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic fell short of the number of signatures needed to trigger a recall election, the Summit County Board of Elections found this afternoon.

Change Akron Now — needing 3,179 valid signatures — got 2,671. Of those, 313 more signatures might be disqualified because they involve circulators who weren't registered or weren't registered at the address on file with the elections board, said Marijean Donofrio, director of the elections board.

Looks like The Devil is poised to loose another battle! Rather you are a believer or not; it seems that, as The Bible suggests, whenever things are going well, The Devil can't stand it. So he has to try to mess it up.

This is a prime example of the evil side of man. He just can't resist the urge to stir up some trouble when things were going well. Like a Demon sent to disrupt. He probably has no idea that he is working for The Evil One.

Joke, right?  :|

Don't worry palijandro7. It was a joke, for the most part.

Haha.  I read that right after I watched that video from the Tea Party thread (the one about America being a Christian nation).

I special election is going to happen.. Dont think City counsel will make it to where it wont benefit the mayor. And here Ithink he wants to get as many votes as possible. I just hope its soon since I'm moving I'd like like to vote for Him...

Its been a while since Concerned Akron said "LOL"

So I'm expecting Don to come out on Monday with guns ablazing.  I don't think he's going to be happy until he has 90% of the vote behind him which is almost doable.  My wild guess is somewherre around 80,000 to 8000.

Its been a while since Concerned Akron said "LOL"

I guess he/she is too busy yuckin it up to reply.  I am very interested to hear some good points about why Don should be recalled.  I mean, maybe he is a douchebag...I don't know, but he seems to "get it" for an old white dude in an old factory town.

The mayor seemed vivid about his comittment to the city of Akron when he spoke about this situation monday. This is like lebron and the mvp voting..lol  no contest..

You can tell the person who put the material together for CAN has some anger issues.  It's a pity when folks can't hold themselves back when trying to make an argument.  My favorite is the Akron Teachers Union being against DEMOCRACY because they don't support the recall.  That is just priceless.

He (Mendenhall) appears to me as someone who would serve more good as being a retiree council watchdog than a mayor.  Actually scratch that, he's a lawyer and I don't wish what Twinsburg has to deal with upon any municipality.

In response to the articles concerning the recall election of Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic.

We too once had a mayor of similar style and temperament, but thankfully we recognized this early on and voted him out. Unfortunately, the citizens of Akron have had to endure the slash-and-burn style of this ogre.  The number of disgraceful public incidents only confirms what is soon to be inevitable -- his removal from office.

It's too bad that he will be able to enjoy a pension when he finally gets voted out, but the sooner he is gone, the better. With his witless rantings, he has successfully done for Akron what Dennis Kucinich did for Cleveland.

How can you compare Kucinich and Plusquellic? What has Plusquellic done that you're so upset about? I understand not agreeing with everything he's done, but recalling the man from office should be reserved for extreme situations and IMO there's nothing justifying such action. Unless the city of Akron is in immenant danger or there's reason to suspect that Plusquellic is trying to defraud the city in some way, wait till the end of his term and elect someone else.

In Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic's recall election, mobilizing voters is considered the key

AKRON -- For months, Akron residents brushed off the recall effort like a gnat at a picnic.  Never gonna happen. Not to brazen, big-idea Don Plusquellic, ruler of Akron since 1987.

Plusquellic, 59, helped create Joint Economic Development Districts in neighboring townships and rebuilt the city's aging schools as community learning centers.  He handily trumped opponents, winning general elections with as much as 70 percent of the vote, at least until he squeezed by former City Councilman Joe Finley in the 2007 Democratic primary.

The vote is in a few weeks... there's people coming out of the woodwork saying they don't like him now.. This is a shame.. U don't re elect a guy who u disagree on policy with.. Not recall him... ugh Akron ... stay sane and not mendenhalled!!!!

Unfortunately, there are really ignorant people who don't stand for anything, but will fall for anything. My man Don is an outstanding Mayor and any small, insignificant faults anybody can find in him need to be ignored. No one is perfect. However, Don, in my opinion, comes pretty darn close. If I was still in Akron, I'd work to organize a campaign; in his favor.

Again I say........LOL! Are you Mr. palijandro7 the website owner? Dandy Don WASTED $760,000.00 to purchase the dump at Manchester Rd. and Carnegie Ave. formerly known as Youngs. Or did you not know that?.......LOL!

This post has classy written all over it. Nothing like a recall drive to bring out the troll in us.

Knowing nothing about the Akron situation but plenty about recall elections I can only say this: "Loyal opposition: if you don't like the current official RUN A BETTER CANDIDATE AGAINST HIM IN THE GENERAL!"

I just don't see any good in having a very costly and disruptive Recall Election in the middle of a term when the charges are so incredibly and rediculously minor. There have been no crimes broken, no fraud or anything. The primary issue is that he spent too much money traveling to Germany and Israel. Now people want to spend just as much to have a recall. Plusquelic's trips just attracted 2 more employee hiring and equipment investing companies to Akron, from Israel. what good is spending this money on a recall of the man responsible for that?

Below, is a link to the Beacon Journal Article about the two new companies that Plusquelic's travels have landed. Now what possible problem could anyone have with his overseas travels, when they produce results like these? People in Akron need to wake up and fight this evil with all of their hearts, minds, body's and souls! Akron is on the rise. Sure, it's temporarily held back by a weak economy, because of the huge manufacturing presence, but all indicators point a tremendous recovery, as soon as the economy does. Why get rid of the man responsible?

Here is a link to the list of companies who are currently located in The Incubator or Global Business Accelerator: http://www.ci.akron.oh.us/aii/tenants.htm

It is important to note that this is Don Plusquelics work. It was his idea, he pushed it and he and his team have been key to negotiating each and every one of these company's start up, relocation or expansion into the incubator. Several from out of state.

There's a lot of people in akron that do not even know about the situation. A bunch of people I know in Akron don't read the paper or even watch the news. What a shame...

The FOP voted to support the recall by 2 votes.  Shame..  I think he's one of the best mayors in the history of the city.

MENDENHALL: "Let’s be very clear. We’re in crisis. 30,000 people have left the city in 15 years.

I dont know where he came up with that number, but it is simply not true.  The 1990 census states Akron had a population of 223,019, and the 2007 estimate states a population of 207,934.  That is a change of a little over 15,000 in seventeen years.  That still isnt great, but isnt that bad compared to many other midwestern cities.  He should at least check his facts before making statements to the press.  I think this whole recall issue is a waste of time and money.  I have yet to hear any new allegations against Plusquellic that was not brought up during the last mayoral election, and the people still elected him.

As someone who can't realistically run because he's a deadbeat on paying his taxes, he doesn't need to be burdened with factual information.

Well today is the vote.. I voted and showed my nonexistent political muscle... there was only a few people voting when I did @ lunch hour... from my guess not a lot will show up to vote.

Wow  only about 30,000 people voted.. And its 3 to 1 infavor of not recalling the mayor...  small voter turnout.

Congrats Akron taxpayers, be sure to send your children to go egg Mendenhall's house.

Recall elections are ALWAYS big losers for the taxpayers. Shame on this Mendenhall putz and his cranky cronies.

Mendenhell should never open his mouth again in public..

Mayor Don... be on ur best behavior and represent Akron well..

^

23 years?  Geez...mayor for life.  But he must be doing a good job or this wouldnt have been such a blow-out.

It was a dumb idea to sell off the sewer system. He should propose outsourcing the fire dept and then all the city workers except for the police. It would be a good way to get rid of the unions.
