I am creating this thread looking for some guidance that I can pass along to one of my wife's best friends who was just accepted to CWRU nursing school.  She is from New Jersey and currently lives in Jersey City.  Late 20's, single.  She did not like the time she spent in Indiana at IU (undergrad).  Her parents have retired to Little Miami, but she does not like it there either.  I showed her Cleveland and she loved the culture that she said was lacking during her experience at IU.

She is a proud Italian so I am leaning towards pushing her to Little Italy of course.  I was just wondering what people know about the rental units in and around Little Italy.  Prices?  Availability?  She will be starting in the fall.  Does anyone know where most CWRU nursing students generally live and whether the nursing school is on MC or on UH's campus?  It would be nice to put her within walking distance.  Any other UC suggestions?  What are the rental rates like at Park Lane Villa?  Coventry will probably be option #2 and maybe even Shaker Square.  I don't see her downtown.

As you live in CH (or maybe SE), you're aware that a lot of students and Univ. Circle workers live in Little Italy/Murray Hill, Shaker Square and Cedar-Fairmount and Coventry, so you're on the mark.

Park Lane's website

She should check out all four areas.

I did my undergrad just north of IU, and I feel her pain.

I believe the Nursing School is near the corner of Cornell and Circle, which would put it in close proximity to Little Italy. That would be my top recommendation. Don't have any specifics on rentals there, but I just saw a Craigslist posting on E. 123rd (I think), and it looked pretty reasonably priced. I would assume prices go up, though, in late summer, as students come back. Coventry and Shaker Square are good choices as well, although you may want to consider Cedar-Fairmount, too. It might be a little sleepier than Coventry, but it's still pretty vibrant, and it's more or less walkable to the nursing school still. Units over there tend to be huge, and the one I most recently heard about on Lennox was like $650. There are also several nondescript but relatively cheap apartments  on Mayfield between Little Italy and Cedar Fairmount, and some in and around Overlook and Kenilworth, too.

At least one my roommate was in med school, they distributed a relocation guide to the incoming class, although I think the listings leaned very heavily toward the corridor between Shaker Square and Van Aken/Lee. Still, might be worth inquiring to see if you could get a copy (or to see if the nursing school will furnish her anything like that).

Best of luck! I think she'll find it a definite step up from central Indiana :)

Little Italy would be a great location.  The Nursing school sits on Cornell Road in the middle of the Case Medical Center at University Hospitals.  Many undergrads/grads live in Little Italy since it's just a simple walk over the bridge to campus.  Most apartments are in the 300-500 range per person.  Not the highest quality, but some properties can be found by a little digging.

I would suggest walking around the neighborhood to pick up numbers.  For something higher end, Park Lane Villa is a great choice.

cedar-fairmount may be sleepier, but i've been to a good number of parties on grandview and bellfield.

I'm doing an apartment search of my own and also ran across this: http://casemed.case.edu/admissions/docs/Relocating%20to%20Cleveland.WITH%20hyperlinks.pdf. This isn't the full guide I was talking about, which actually gave apartment descriptions and contact info, and there's not anything really groundbreaking there, and it's a bit dated, but does give some introductory info about off-campus housing, as well as some links of campus resources for students seeking housing around Case. And looking at it reminded me that Hessler Court might be another option.

For Little Italy rentals, the best thing to do is drive or walk up and down Murray Hill, Fairview and Mayfield roads (and side streets) looking for signs and writing down phone numbers. You'll see a few things on Craig's List but for the most part leasing is still done the old fashioned way in the LI.

Also, this is a cute building that was recently renovated --> http://italiabldg.com/index.php

The Schoolhouse is an excellent location in Little Italy.  Here is the website:

http://www.murrayhillcondos.net/

There are many units for rent, 1bd starting at $900.  There are also boutiques, an architectural firm, and yoga class inside the building.  The lady who shows the apartments, Jean Bucchiere, is one of the nicest ladies I have ever met.

The only problem with Little Italy is that you do not have many options that are "nice."  Many of the apartments can be a little run-down (schoolhouse not like that, of course).

Other options would be Cedar-Fairmount (where I currently live), Coventry, and Shaker Square.  I do not know Shaker Square, so I will not comment upon it (See MTS).  Between CF & Coventry, I think a grad student is better suited for Cedar Fairmount.  Furthermore, it is even closer to Case's campus than Coventry.

Thanks to all.  I will pass this information along.
