U.S. taking closer look at Akron police

Justice Department reviews community complaints following 2 shootings

By Phil Trexler, Beacon Journal, March 10, 2009

The U.S. Department of Justice is stepping up its investigation of the Akron police force in the wake of two shootings and the subsequent community fallout.

Akron City Council President Marco Sommerville announced Monday that the Justice Department's civil-rights branch intends to review complaints against Akron police. He said he was unsure when the investigation would begin.

The move comes as a follow-up to last month's visit in which Justice Department authorities listened to members of the community voice concerns about the Akron Police Department's handling of two shootings in recent years.
