Posted March 18, 200916 yr I cannot beleive this. http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/2009/03/18/rich.getting.food.stamps.wlwt Food Stamp Loophole May Lead To Change In State Law WARREN COUNTY -- State leaders are pushing for a change to the state budget after it came to light that wealthy individuals were allowed to collect food stamps. Rep. Shannon Jones said Wednesday she planned to introduce an amendment to the state budget that would take into account monetary assets besides income in determining whether someone is eligible for food stamps. The move comes after News 5 reported Tuesday about a loophole in Ohio's public assistance plan that allowed a Warren County resident with a $311,000 home, $80,000 in the bank and a new Mercedes in the driveway to collect $500 a month in food stamps and $300 in cash assistance. http://www.wlwt.com/news/18959841/detail.html

Currently, the law only takes into account a person's income, so if they have no income and $1 million in the bank, they still qualify for assistance. I find this ridiculous myself, and I do not think this woman should be qualifying for assistance. I almost wonder if someone would apply just to make a point.

OK, I should have put that a different way because I know that is true... he was making more than someone who should be getting welfare.

There are so many that really need help.
March 19, 200916 yr Its ridiculous that there isn't already some kind of limit to define what is and isn't wealthy enough to not qualify. I just hope our legislators don't go too far with this. I say that because I know someone who's spouse passed away last year that has more than a few bucks in the bank because of life insurance, but still qualifies for food stamps based on income. While she certainly isn't broke if you look purely at her bank statements; foodstamps and the money she has saved up is all she and her daughter have to live on for the foreseeable future. To play devil's advocate, the person used as an example in the article above may have a handful of kids, a disability preventing them from working, and $350000 in mortgage debt. In that case, this person might not really be as wealthy as it would seem on first glance. Sure, they could sell the house and move somewhere cheaper, and sell the car for something more reasonable, but that might just make them stupid rather than wealthy. If all you and your family have to live on is $80000 plus social security for the rest of your life, you aren't wealthy.
March 26, 200916 yr States Consider Drug Tests For Needy Recipients Of Food Stamps, Unemployment Benefits And Welfare http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/03/26/national/main4894337.shtml?tag=topHome;topStories (AP) Lawmakers in at least eight U.S. states want recipients of food assistance, unemployment benefits or welfare to submit to random drug testing. The effort comes as more Americans turn to these safety nets to ride out the recession. Poverty and civil liberties advocates fear the strategy could backfire, discouraging some people from seeking financial aid and making already desperate situations worse. Those in favor of the drug tests say they are motivated out of a concern for their constituents' health and ability to put themselves on more solid financial footing once the economy rebounds. But proponents concede they also want to send a message: you don't get something for nothing.
March 26, 200916 yr Interesting plan. The downside is addicts become really desparate and start causing even more problems. That doesn't justify giving them money, it's just something to consider.
