The general vicinities of the photos from this thread:

I apologize in advance for some blurred shots - I picked up a new lense that doesn't have image stabilization so it's taking some getting used to.

Heading out of Tremont, passing by St. Theodosius Russian Orthodox Church:

Can you see Key Tower?

cle031509_2.jpg

The view of downtown from I-490:

cle031509_3.jpg

And from I-77:

cle031509_6.jpg

Walker and Weeks condos - great spaces, not the most ideal location:

cle031509_7.jpg

And welcome to (North) Collinwood - East 152nd Street and Waterloo Road:

cle031509_8.jpg

Good building stock on this stretch, just needs some TLC:

cle031509_9.jpg

And we arrive at our destination - well, the Beachland Tavern next door for brunch (highly recommended!). The Beachland Ballroom is a former Croatian hall, now a venue for lots of indie rock bands http://www.beachlandballroom.com/

A few people out and about on a sunny but chilly day:

cle031509_11.jpg

But we had places to be, so off we go - north on East 156th:

cle031509_12.jpg

A mostly intact strip of commercial/mixed-use buildings:

cle031509_13.jpg

And we reach Lakeshore Boulevard - in the background, one of dozens of highrises along Lake Erie:

cle031509_14.jpg

Pretty sure Lakeshore had a streetcar back in the day (accounting for the extra wide road):

cle031509_15.jpg

Quaint homes in the Shore Acres neighborhood north of Lakeshore:

cle031509_16.jpg

Like lots of projects around the country, in need of a bailout:

cle031509_17.jpg

Once we cross the border into Bratenahl (a separate municipality bordered by I-90 on the south and Lake Erie on the north), things are a tad different:

cle031509_18.jpg

cle031509_19.jpg

cle031509_20.jpg

One Bratenahl Place:

cle031509_21.jpg

cle031509_22.jpg

The smaller and much more contemporary-styled Breezy Bluff Estates:

cle031509_23.jpg

But we've reached the end of Lakeshore Boulevard, back onto I-90:

cle031509_24.jpg

CSU's Rhodes Tower on the left and Fenn Tower (dorms) on the right:

Although it's unfortunate that a former warehouse was demolished - it opened up the next two views:

cle031509_27.jpg

That was it for that day:

cle031509_28.jpg

Now, over to Detroit-Shoreway:

cle031509_29.jpg

Detroit Avenue on the left, the Shoreway on the right:

cle031509_30.jpg

More Detroit Avenue:

cle031509_31.jpg

The Big Egg is a recently reopened landmark in the area:

cle031509_32.jpg

Interesting commercial buildings on this stretch:

cle031509_33.jpg

We missed our turn so we take a peek around - forumer DanB owns a building in this area, a smaller and more sedate version of Little Italy on the West side:

cle031509_34.jpg

Newer residential construction along Father Caruso Drive:

cle031509_35.jpg

Here we are - we wanted to try Stone Madd on West 65th. Decent food, great beer options, and there's plenty of eye candy: http://www.cleveland.com/events/index.ssf/2008/05/irish_pub_repaved_the_way_to_g.html

Just up the street, this little storefront needs some TLC:

A quick (and blurry) peek inside the Gordon Square Arcade - part of the Detroit-Shoreway's renaissance into an arts district:

cle031509_44.jpg

cle031509_45.jpg

Cleveland Public Theater, one of the neighborhood's cultural anchors:

cle031509_46.jpg

Adjacent residential:

cle031509_47.jpg

Nice subtle gothic details on the building on the left:

cle031509_48.jpg

A view down West 65th - with the spires of St. Colman's on the left:

cle031509_49.jpg

And time to head home - this time via Franklin Boulevard:

cle031509_50.jpg

cle031509_51.jpg

cle031509_51a.jpg

cle031509_52.jpg

cle031509_54.jpg

cle031509_55.jpg

Back to West 25th Street in Ohio City - hope you enjoyed!

Nice tour MayDay.  I've really come to like Stone Madd.  Easy to walk to for an afternoon beer while working on the building!  Only eaten a few things there, but its all been good.  Could you get a feel for the streetscape work on Detroit?  It's really going to make all the difference when that and the theater are complete.

My daughter's wedding is going to be at Mt. Carmel this summer, glad they weren't included in the closings!

Nice trip.

That Cleveland Public Theater building looks like it has a lot of potential. What kind of shows do they do there? Looks interesting.

I love these houses.

Thanks for the tour, MayDay

Excellent photos!

Nice tour. And, yes, Lakeshore Boulevard had shared tracks for a streetcar and interurban on it.

I dig it.

hey now. a shoutout to nc and the big egg all in one thread? i'm lovin it -- nice tour!

The Big Egg is back?  LOVE IT.  Wonder if it's as fantastically fun as it was post-clubbing on a late weekend night/morning like it was in the 80's?

I haven't been yet, but that "new" sign bothers me.

Great shots as always Mayday.  I often get confused as to what constitutes "North" Collinwood.  I always took it to mean north of the highway, but somebody who lives on the lake up there told me that it is only the short streets north of Lakeshore.

One of my best friends lives right around the corner from 152/Waterloo on Lucknow.  I drive by that area all the time.  The crowds the Beachland draws are always impressive.  It seems like a real hot spot although I have never been inside.  With regard to that one pic of the buildings you say need some TLC, if you would have went around the corner on E 156 you would have seen a sign in the second floor window saying that it is going to be renovated into live/work lofts.

Great pics Mayday.  I was in this weekend and I think we totally crossed paths several times.  I thought I might have seen you Friday night, but didnt....  although I did get there late.

I was able to stop into Lucy's on Saturday morning in MTS hood and had an amazing conversation with the owners.

It was sad to hear that they did close their restaurant on Waterloo "Marika's", but at least Lucy's is still open (so needless to say we brought back lots of struedel, meats, produce etc., for us and ethnic friends back in DC.  You just cant find stuff like that here!)

Always liked Detroit-Shoreway.

Nice variety! It's good to see the often overlooked Collinwood neighborhood.

The explanation I get from friends who grew up there is that the line between North and South moves, and is determined by what color of people live where.  The way they quickly interject "North!" when someone says Collinwood speaks volumes.

Well, if that's the case, present day "North" Collinwood would be everything north of Lakeshore from Bratenahl to Euclid, as well as everything east of E 185 that is still part of Cleveland.

The Beachland/Waterloo area is partcularly hard to categorize.  It's becoming its own thing entirely.  I guess modern Collinwood has several disparate zones and that's all there is to it.  What's most interesting to me is that my dad, who lived there in the 60s, tells the same story of integration/encroachment that friends my age do.  It's as if the process has been at a virtual stalemate there for decades.

Wow - you have any idea how friggin' good your pictures are?  I've not visited many Cleveland threads of late, but I'm sure glad I clicked on this one!

That was fantastic!  Your best effort for a long time.  I am always surprised by the diversity in Cleveland, and forget about the huge amount of Victoriana in the city.  My favorite thing about your photographs is how honest they are.  You don't go for the glamor shots, but keep in the wires, trash cans, rusted cars, broken windows and abandoned factories in one shot, and follow it with well balanced, genteel residental pictures and skyline shots.  Interesting.  Also love the street scapes....hell I love it all!!

Very nice.  You took many of those right in my old hood where I grew up (E151 by Shore Acres).

I thought Collinwood was separated by the train tracks.  The Italians on one side, and Eastern Euros on the other (back in the day).

Very cute!

according to my mom that would be correct, palijandro.  mom grew up on 169th until high school, following the yugoslav sprawl trajectory to lake county.  add another divider: west of 152nd you'd find the appalachians and blacks.

Nice pics of North Collinwood!  I love my old neighborhood :-D

The tracks run parallel to I-90.  That is where I would divide North and South Collinwood.  However, except for the E 185 neighborhood and the short streets along the lake north of Lakeshore, you are not going to find many Italians or Eastern Euros.... at least not nowadays.

Nice. I always liked the North Collinwood area. The homes and the area is still very much intact. I wouldn't mind living in the neighborhood when I come back to Cleveland after school.

Great trio!

But we had places to be, so off we go - north on East 152nd:

You were actually driving north on E 156 in this shot and the ones that follows.

Great set! I'm really impressed by the Stone Mad info; it's impressive to see that much effort going into creating a distinctive atmosphere in a locally-owned establishment.
