Posted March 22, 200916 yr Cleveland – Ansel Road area Sorry I don't know how to embed a Google map. :( http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&ll=41.5236,-81.630371&spn=0.020338,0.052185&t=h&z=15&msid=114006940853854416684.000465aaacc6c3a6c58f9 Pictures from today of the St. Clair/Superior neighborhood after attending Mass at St. Casimir on Sowinski Ave. A church surrounded by wire fencing doesn't exactly say "all are welcome in this place" Surrounding neighborhood is really gritty looking Infill houses Along East 79th Ex-library branch? March 22, 200916 yr Sad, but still some hidden gems in there. Is St. Casimir one of the churches to close? "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

March 22, 200916 yr excellent work. you can still get a good picture of the density of not-all-that-long-ago cleveland around there.
March 22, 200916 yr KJP - St Casimir is on the closure list. There were less than 50 people at the Saturday service, but I am told that more people attend the Sunday Mass in Polish. The parish is poor but debt-free, per Monsignor Telesz. The congregation is appealing the decision, as the next nearest Polish parish is St. Stan's in Slavic Village 6 miles away. Other Polish nationality parishes on the closure/merger list include St. Hyacinth on Francis Ave, Sacred Heart of Jesus on E.71st, St. Barbara on Denison, St. Hedwig in Lakewood, Holy Cross in Elyria, and St. Stanislaus in Lorain. The only ones spared are St. Stan's in Cleveland, Immaculate Heart of Mary on Lansing, and Nativity in Lorain. Similarly, three of the four Hungarian parishes in the diocese are slated for closure (St. Emeric by WSM, St. Margaret of Hungary in Orange, and St. Ladislaus in Lorain, leaving only St. Elizabeth on Buckeye. Sad to see so much of Cleveland's ethnic heritage in the crosshairs.
March 22, 200916 yr ugh. funny you mention st. lad's as my bro just texted me from st. laddies club. but this is a shame, what will happen to these beautiful old neighborhood churches?
March 22, 200916 yr Did you get a good look at the Alhambra? It's been "under renovation" for 4-5 years, at least, and hadn't shown any progress in 4-5 years, at least the last I had seen it. Did it look like there was anything currently happening at the site?
March 23, 200916 yr Found this old image of St Casimir from 1940 - school at left was demolished and replaced in 1949. Also an old postcard of the Alhambra Apartments Credit: Cleveland Memory Project clevelandmemory.org
March 24, 200916 yr Great tour, thanks! I've always loved the towers of St. Casimir...hope they win their appeal.
