For spring break I decided to take a road trip to my favorite city in the US, Cincinnati.  It was an amazing trip and I met some great people.

I ended up taking over 400 photos, so here's an assortment by neighborhood split between two threads.

Here's part 2:

That's it.  Thank you to everyone who helped me through this trip.  I had a blast.

Back to Part 1, in case you missed it: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,18762.msg379910.html

Awesome!

Great photos.  That theatre is fantastic.

Thanks for sharing! I can never get enough of Cincy.

I have lived in Covington for 17 years, and it is interesting to see The Nati through someone elses eye.  Thanks!  Fantastic set.

I only have one word: definitive.  This is the most all-encompassing Cincinnati thread I can remember!  And then when you went from the Basilica to Columbia Tusculum, I just thought, "show-off."  Then after hitting so many spots, I was thinking, "what the hell hasn't he hit?  Well, the Museum Center, and Northside..."  Keep scrolling - ah, there's Northside...aaaaaaand there's the Museum Center!

Fantastic pictures, and just a comprehensive tour...thank you so much for posting this!

You covered some ground now!!!!  Nice job!

Wow, what an amazing tour! Thanks!

You've got me all homesick now...great photos.

I really enjoyed your photos.  Number 118 made me realize that there had been at least 2 wall signs on that building.  You can see that same building around 1988(?) in this topic: Cincinnati Ghost Signs.

I like Cincy!

great pictures.  what/where is 114?

You've got me all homesick now...great photos.

Seconded... Why the hell am I paying a fortune to live in a rundown shoebox NYC when I could be living in a big apartment back home in Cincy for one-third the rent?

Re #151: I love those old amber lampshades that are scattered around town on traffic islands... They remind me of German Kaiser helmets with the spike on top. When I was a kid growing up in Fort Thomas and my parents would take me on drives around the city, I loved seeing the amber lampshades because then I knew I was in Cincinnati... I don't think I've seen anything like them in any other city. I'm always surprised that as many still exist as they do, and that they all haven't succumbed to theft, vandalism, or wayward drivers. Does the city still actively replace those lamps as they get damaged?

What's the building under construction in #128?

great pictures. what/where is 114?

Remains of an old reservoir in Eden Park. It's like a piece of Roman ruins that somehow got transplanted to Cincinnati.

It is the old reservoir in Eden Park.  And the building under construction is the new School for the Creative and Performing Arts on Central Ave.

What happened to it? It collapse?

Oh, also ProkNo, thank you for including some shots of the various Cincinnati Public Schools.  Walnut Hills, SCPA, Hughes, and Withrow are all such beautiful schools, and are really an asset to the Cincinnati community. If you are ever in the Cincinnati Art Museum, there is a whole gallery devoted to art that was hung in the halls of CPS highschools, and there is some really great stuff in there.

PS great shot of SCD (#95). Sometimes during free bells in highschool some of my friends would climb up on the roof, and the view from up there (downtown, river, KY, etc.) is amazing.

What happened to it? It collapse?

No, my understanding is that it just wasn't used anymore, and it's less expensive to maintain a grassy field than a water-filled reservoir - more useful too!

What happened to it? It collapse?

It was "undergrounded" in the late fifties/early sixties and covered with the reflecting pool (pic #115.)  Don't know why they left some of the old structure.

How did you get inside Withrow & Walnut?

How did you get inside Withrow & Walnut?

Haha, I just walked in after hours.  I got kicked out of Withrow after going into the auditorium, but Walnut Hills was great.  I got a guided tour from a student named Christiana (I think she thought I was cute).  She showed me the whole campus, but the Library under the dome was locked.

These are freakin amazing! I'm glad to call this place my home!

Oh man.  I have to say that I think this is my favorite Cincy thread.  What a beautiful city!!  Thanks for the awesome tour.

You made me fall in love with Cincy all over again!  Thanks for sharing!

I saw this thread, then I ...

The old Eden Park reservior was originally divided into two reservoirs. The upper one was upgraded to an underground structure with a shallow pond on top. The lower one was converted to a playfield.

The legend is that a contractor bid to remove the lower old reservior wall but didn't know that it was solid stone! He thought it was two walls filled with earth. He ran out of money, and part of the lower old reservior wall remains.

Notice the climber on the wall. This is where Cincinnati climbers hang out. (Hang out - he he he)

Super thread! I love that you got interior photos of some amazing places.

The pump house obviously is still there as well.  The waterworks moved to its present location near Coney Island around 1850 (the old waterworks is in ruins in Bicentennial Commons) and the current intake tunnel under the Ohio River was dug by hand around that time.  The water travels by gravity through a pipe about 9 miles from the waterworks to this point, then it was pumped into the reservoir.  The whole downtown basin is served by the reservoir via a tunnel dug by hand in the late 1800's.  The new reservoir (built in the 60's) is hidden from view but works the exact same way and uses that same tunnel to feed downtown.  It looked like a parking garage when it was under construction, with columns that support the reflecting pool above.

now I am really looking forward to my trip to Cincinnati. Looks great, and also looks like spring will be in full swing too. Nice pics

Thanks for the replies about the reservoir, had never even heard about it before - it's why you gotta love this site.

Great job Prokno5!

I went to WHHS before moving back to Columbus. It's weird seeing the building from that angle. That side is really hidden - which sucks because thats the best side imo. I always entered from Blair Ave. Getting to school via car from Blair Ave. was like sitting in traffic on 75 in Atlanta. I remember those Roman statues. They make you take Latin if you start in Middle School but luckily I only had to take Spanish.

Comprehensive and photogenic. One of those threads you can shove in someone's face when they ask why in the world anyone would want to live in Cincinnati.

To a certain degree yes.  I'm doing some more research on these "trolley poles" now and will be writing an article on them, their history and their future in Cincinnati.

What's the building under construction in #128?

It will become the nation's first K-12 public arts school (part of Cincinnati Public Schools)...and it is located in Cincinnati's center city on the border between Downtown and historic Over-the-Rhine.

Cool... I look forward to seeing what you're able to dig up. They're one of those local quirks that makes Cincinnati unique, and I'd love to know more about their history.

Excellent!  What's the location of #142?  It looks familiar, yet unfamiliar.

I would have driven through the frame of that shot about 27 seconds into this video...

(Google map here)

Ah, maybe that's it... maybe I'd seen that "CincinnatiRoads" site at one point.

#142 is on Elm Street immediately south of Memorial Hall and Music Hall, taken from Washington Park.

Most excellent thread.  I love the interior shots; it's like you walked around a deserted Cincy and let yourself in wherever you went.

Thanks, I enjoyed making this thread.  But the city is most certainly NOT deserted, rather it's filled with delightful people that gladly showed me around many of these historic structures.  The man at Memorial Hall was incredibly kind.

Good, it was modeled after it according to Wikipedia.

Where's the chicks taking their tops off? Or tugs-of-war on the beach where chicks' tops fall off? What kind of Spring Break thread is this?

heart joy in this thread
