My BFF and I decided to help the economy.  We went on a little shopping spree and hit up several restaurants SoHo yesterday.

I rarely shop downtown so I don't have a regular gauge on traffic, however, I noticed upscale stores and restaurants are virtually empty.  But low end and discount stores are packed.

There are lots of people out and about and traffic is as bad as ever.

Then I turned around and these shoes spoke to me in tongues!  If I was a woman I would rock those pumps like nobody's business!

SoHo won't ever be the same without 2nd Ave Deli :-(.  Great thread, though.  Brings back memories.  Thanks!!

Very nice photos.  I am going on vacation there in June. I can't wait. I never actually really been in N.Y. I just did a quick job up there and never got to see the city.

I probably walked right past you down there yesterday!

I always go to the Whole Foods on Houston at Bowery (for the beer).  A couple blocks from "Grace's office building", if I'm correct, although I had no idea that was it.  These are all pretty neat photos.

You shop all the way down there when you're living by Columbia?

Only for the beer selection  :-D

The Bowery Beer Room is the greatest place I've found in the city, I usually stop down there after work, but it was such a nice weekend I felt like going out a bit.

Soho is my favorite neighborhood in NYC.

Great pics! Thanks.

What!? I was planning on going there for my first TBA trip to NYC! Awww. Hopefully Katz's will still be there. Lovely pics MyTwoSense! Those beautiful walls of buildings give a nice cozy, enclosed feel, despite the busy activity on the street.

First off, the Second Ave. deli was never in SoHo, it was in the East Village and has move uptown to the 30's if I'm not mistaken.

Katz is located further East on Houston in the Lower Eastside.

So you kids can rest assured and visit those establishments.

Are you some kind of beer hater??

Or have you any suggestions for where I can find $30/bottle Belgians a bit closer?

I rarely/seldom drink.  I don't know anything about beer.

Well done.

I know it did move but I was sure it was in Soho.  Maybe I'm mistaken.

I heard this area was "up & coming", is this true?

I heard this area was "up & coming", is this true?

It didn't look up and coming to me; it looked pretty well established. Everything looked tapped out. Soho has the largest collection of Cast Iron buildings in the world and they're very uniform and consistent in scale. It's extremely hard for a developer to get variances in neighborhoods like that. It seems like the Meatpacking district (esp. with the highline) area and tribeca have the most new development going on but obviously I'm not the best person to answer that.

I heard this area was "up & coming", is this true?

It's a neighborhood in constant transition.  Every since the movie ghost, the neighborhood has been changing.

I went passed H&M and uniqlo, I was like.  Is there a concert going on in there?  It was ridiculous.  Bloomies on the otherhand, dead and none of those damn stores deliver right away like their uptown counterparts!  :whip:

Na.  I just don't know the folks like I know the folks in Barney's, Bergdorf or the Madison Ave. boutique.

Also, when I got of the N train I walked straight (no jokes) down prince to meet my BFF.

I see...Barney's & Bergdof have that "neighborhood-y" feeling--lol. btw the uniqlo store is really kind of nice. Some of the jeans are decent. I remember when it was Canal Jean (okay, not really that long ago); I miss that store.

That store looked like "raging hormones and acne" waiting to explode.  I could only look in for a few minutes.  I thought I would turn to stone.

oh stop it. I see old people like myself all the time when I go in...then again, they're usually the parents of bratty HS and NYU kids making sure junior has some new clothes for school :-P

The next time you post a photo of the Vosges boutique, it'd d@mn well better be a minimum of 800 pixels wide, missy! :whip:

When I took that I totally thought of you!  LOL

canal jeans is still around. it's further up on bway next to nyu. a shell of its former self, but it exists.

we even visited it a couple times when it was in exile in brooklyn waaaay the hell out in the middle of nowhere (on nostrand by brooklyn college). it was living on fumes then, but i think its actually ok in shrunken form where it is now.

Canal jeans was everywhere downtown back in the late 80 & early 90's.  I didn't live in NYC then but you could find a Duane Reade, Ricky's, OMG Jeans, Canal Jeans and Urban Outfitters.  Basically that was all you could find downtown.

SoHo between Broadway or West Broadway hadn't taken off yet.  I don't even think Issey Miyake was open in SoHo back then.  Otto Tootsi Plohound was the "it" SoHo store in those days.  I remember when "Match" was the hot restaurant.  So hot they open uptown near Barney's then closed.

Now West Broadway is a ghost town.  I remember when "broadway" below west 4 was bad...and i mean real bad and all the stores were on W. Broadway.  When Armani Exchange & Pottery Barn (now closed) opened up on broadway, followed by Staples, Old Navy, Kenneth Cole and Banana Republic things seemed to have shifted to Broadway.

My niece is already to go to that store.  That is on her "Spring Break Birthday shopping" list.  Again, H&M, Zara, Uniqlo...do nothing for me.  I already know, I'm going to hand them metrocards and send them on their merry way.

just dropped into topshop--in my thoroughly unprofessional opinion: slightly higher quality than H&M; quality on par with uniqlo, but with more variety (i.e. trendier styles). Didn't try anything on, but the jeans looked fairly decent and well priced.

Great shots, MTS.

The kids went on grand opening day and My neice gave it 2.5 stars out of 5.  Even though she bought three dresses.  My nephew didn't like the mens store, he said the clothes were cut to small and rolled his eyes.  I thought for sure he would like it.  He just grunted.

The girls seemed to like it better than the guys.  They favorite store is Bloomingdales - SoHo.

I hate Bloomingdales in soho. Not that I like B-dales much anyway (remember when everyone thought it was so cute and clever to call it "Bloomies?"  :-P okay, that was the 70's), but at least in the main store you can sort of anonymously browse and not have self-important sales people breathing down your neck, eyeing you as prey (not that they do that with me anyway since I usually look so downscale. lol) Actually the few times I've been in the soho store it's been so dead I wonder how it's still in business. I remember when I first moved to NY the flagship hadn't been remodeled yet and the main floor was actually kind of fun, before they put in all that glitzy black marble. But why am i complaining about "self-important sales people" to someone whose mecca is Barney's!?!??!

That because the downtown store caters to 30 and under folks.

The kids went on Saturday and again this past saturday with me in tow and the place was a mob scene.  They went a couple times during the week and said during the work day its dead.

The old 59 street store reminded me of May Co. Downtown, especially the 3 Ave side.

mrnyc, be warned.  It's a bunch of pimple faces teens and college kids.  I was frightened.  Think H&M shoppers on meth+nuvo+red bull!

mrnyc, don’t listen to mts. Although the store obviously attracts a younger crowd in general, there was a mix of all ages—some families—many tourists, probably European, who are a lot more familiar with topshop than Americans. (then again, if you’re more used to rubbing elbows with dowagers on Madison Avenue you might feel out of place …)

hey ev don thx for the topshop report.

Listen to me...I know how to shop!  ;)

mission accomplished -- here's my report. i walked my spouse to work, then meandered down to soho. i got some black jeans at uniqlo for i think $50. among other stores i hit topshop too. its a fun place and great for teens to maybe 30-somethings. yes most of the stuff is for young people, but indeed some of the jeans were nice for almost any age and fairly decently priced at $40 or $70. they also have these more expensive slippery/waxed style jeans that i thought were pretty cool if you are hip&young enough. i bought a newsboy cap and a new wallet there. it was nice that you get a funky reusable cloth shopping bag with your purchase. i was done shopping by noon so i wandered down to tribeca and had lunch at landmarc -- highly recommended.

You should write for the Thursday Style section in the Times--lol. Uniqlo has some decent jeans. A few years ago—before the big flagship store opened—I bought a pair of raw denim jeans from a “pop-up” store they had on Greene St. for some ridiculously low price. I loved them and still wear them although they’re falling apart. The problem now is that they don’t make them anymore, at least not that particular cut. I go back periodically to check, as they keep changing the lines. They do sell some selvedge (sp?) jeans that are similar but for much higher price (though still not prohibitive) than the regular ones. Likewise I’ll probably go back to topshop and have a more serious look, though at my age I don’t think I should wear anything “slippery” or “waxed”...ha ha…
