What are some really good hair products that last long and are strong? Prices? Where I can get them?

I'm looking mainly at mousse and paste, but other suggestions are welcome

Well what kind of hair do you have?  What type of style are you working with?  What is your ethnicity?

As MTS said, keep in mind that it all depends on your hair type/texture. I only offer the following as someone with poker straight/fine hair:

For a paste/pomade, I swear by American Crew's Forming Cream:

A little goes a long way - I mean, less than the size of a pea and I'm good to go. I bought this in December and still have about half the container left and for about $10 for the container, that's d@mn good. It's not as superglue-strong as others but in my opinion that's a good thing.

For a mousse/gel product, it's Aveda's Custom Control Gel - it has mica chips in it, which is great if your hair looks better with the "wet look" (mine does):

The drawback is that it costs almost $20 and I go through a container every two months - if anyone can suggest a less expensive alternative, I'm all ears! Oh, and for any heteros lurking on this thread and stealing our advice - feel free to offer a donation to the UrbanOhio fund! ;-)

I have thick, dark brown hair. All I really want to do is be able to "brush" the hair up off my forehead and hopefully stay that way for hours.

$20 is a little tooo pricey for me :(

^Believe me, after my severance runs out, I'm going to consider cutting back (*gasp**shudder*gasp*) on my hair product budget.

If you're just doing the front brushup, you might also try the Matrix form putty (fyi, I've bought both this and the American Crew Forming Cream at Trade Secret stores for about $10 each):

And I repeat to you heteros secretly scoping out this thread for tips - cough up some cash for the UrbanOhio fund drive!

I use a product by a company called d:fi .. specifically their d:struct pliable molding creme. It's by the same company that makes American Crew (MayDay is right, though .. American Crew is awesome, but a bit more expensive), but I've been using d:fi's stuff for years because I like the fact that it's very much what its name describes: it's pliable, it's moldable, and it's a creme.

It starts out as a creme, but as you work it into your hair, it becomes very sticky which creates great hold. You can apply it to wet hair or dry. I love using it for the bed head look.

The only problem is it's pretty hard to find. You generally have to find a salon that sells it, or find it somehow online.

Wait, a hair product budget?? Farmer Shawn? What??

"The only problem is it's pretty hard to find. You generally have to find a salon that sells it, or find it somehow online."

Pfft, hard to find... :-) according to their site, d:fi products are sold at Charles Scott in Westlake, Allure in Solon, and Ulta in Westgate in Fairview Park. I say if you have to drive more than an hour to get it, *that* qualifies as hard to find.

B!tch, I will SO shank you in the kidney - got a preference, left or right?!? sly.gif

Well damn. That was very Madea of you!  Where did you learn that violent behavior?  I'm speechless.

Would that work on thick and curly hair? I'd probably use it when my hair is longer because if I don't do anything it turns into a giant Jew Fro  haha. I hate it, I wish my hair was straight.

YOU live my life, growing up near Youngstown and living IN Cleveland and try to be a complete pacifist - as IF?!?

DJ Orion, I have no clue as to what could help you - whatever the case, quit b!tching about having thick hair with texture!

LMAO haha.  I know I shouldn't.  Even my girlfriend likes it.  But it's time for a change.  I'm serious, I need something like that extra hold stuff because I'm sick of wearing a hat after I wash it just to keep it down.  I really want a nice A|X casual outfit, but my hair would need some pampering also.

So your hair doesn't end up looking like this

OMFG.  Ok I thought I was going to get some actual advice but I should have known better.  I love you guys lmao.

You are so gangsta, honey!

I used to use hair product, but then I just started getting my hair trimmed very short and just letting it grow out just long enough to be not caught in the helmet while cycling. Shorter hair also improves circulation at the top.

I have so much hair product not even used here :(

Sugar, I don't know what your hair looks like.  MayDay and I can only do so much with a description.  We need to see what your hair looks like.  We need visuals, we're not miracle workers.

I think I might just check out either that American Crew stuff, or the d:fi.  There is a salon Downtown that uses American Crew so I might just check them out.  I think it's time for a new look anyway.

Just be careful with the product you chose.  You don't want to end up like this.

I will try my best not to use a hair product that will land me on a gurney. I'll tell you that much.

...oh and stay away from pyrotechnics

I got some Redken paste. It's really good (but kind of expensive). I think the more expensive the paste is, the less you notice a difference. Just don't get that cheap gel bs like LA looks from the dollar store. Paste is the way to go imo. Redken paste and shampoo I bought smells like peppermint and tingles the scalp. That's how they get you :)

I think I'm only one in this world that puts nothing special in my hair.  The only ever maintenance it receives is a daily shampoo, or when I cut it myself every four weeks.  I can already tell I save a lot of money.  My roomate two years ago was trying to form waves after cutting off the afro, and had the bathroom filled with a bunch of oils and various shampoos.  The smell would be absolutely revolting.

I *wish* I didn't have to do anything, but I have not one, but THREE "cowlicks" - one on the front and two on the back of my head. Since my hair is finely textured, it ends up standing up in chunks  Cutting it really short makes it even worse.

When that whole "bedhead" trend came around a few years back, I was so p!ssed - I mean, guys with perfectly good hair that naturally lays flat were paying to style theirs like mine (sans product) :x

LOL

I have the cowlick issue too, so I keep my hair a little longer. I guess that's the gift I gave to my daughter. Before her hair grew longer it had the same stupid rooster tail popping up in back. Bok bok Bock-ah!

I throw in little cheap gel. I think I'm using treseme or something right now. I don't like the super strong hold stuff, but I buy whatever's on sale. My hair is too straight to just let it go without anything, and I have too much to use paste...I tried it and I looked like Fonzy.

I have thick coarse curly hair and I have tried just about everything. The only thing that works for me to "straighten out the mess" is American Crew Fiber.

Head & ShouldersTM once every 10 days, whether I need it or not.

When my hair is shorter (which it is not, at the moment), I use Murray's.  Best stuff around.

You guys may laugh but I use Vaseline.  Yep.  Vaseline.

I have thick dark hair that I keep pretty short.  After spending $20/3.5 oz. of Sebastian Grease for years I discovered:

Sebastian Grease  - Main Ingredient:  Petrolatum

Vaseline - Main Ingredient: Petrolatum

Vaseline = 1/4 the cost.

It molds great and keeps my hair soft while giving me that nice popped wig.
