CLEVELAND - Shake Shake Shake, Shaker Square! (and Fairmount and more)

My latest adventure was taking advantage of nice weather and heading over to Cleveland's Shaker Square neighborhood. From there, I also headed over to Larchmere, Fairmount Boulevard, Shaker Lakes and a few other places.

My route (about 5.5 miles):

Starting in the lobby of the Terminal Tower, on the way to catch the Rapid:

shaker0309_1.jpg

Off we go - I took the Blue Line (light rail):

shaker0309_2.jpg

Passing the RTA railyards at East 55th:

shaker0309_3.jpg

The train passes through some blighted areas:

shaker0309_4.jpg

Not everything is so bleak:

But still...

St. Elizabeth church, built by Hungarians who settled in the area - the new juvenile courts building under construction in the background:

And here we are at Shaker Square http://www.shakersquare.net/history/history-square.htm:

shaker0309_10.jpg

The southwest quadrant is home to a movie theater and grocery store:

shaker0309_11.jpg

Heading east on Shaker Boulevard, looking south on Van Aken - where the Blue Line heads southeast:

shaker0309_12.jpg

Moreland Courts on the northern side of Shaker Boulevard:

shaker0309_13.jpg

The Rapid station at Coventry Road and Shaker Boulevard:

shaker0309_14.jpg

But let's head back west on Shaker, toward the Square:

shaker0309_15.jpg

Moreland Courts - nope, no architectural character here ;-)

Another trains passes through the Square:

shaker0309_22.jpg

The northeast quadrant has a CVS, coffeshop and restaurants:

shaker0309_23.jpg

Doorway to the corridor to the parking area:

shaker0309_24.jpg

Looking north on North Moreland, with lots of historic apartment buildings:

shaker0309_25.jpg

Some in good shape, others not so much:

shaker0309_26.jpg

The AmTrust bank building is a landmark at Larchmere and North Moreland:

shaker0309_27.jpg

Over to Larchmere, the electrical substation needs some TLC:

shaker0309_28.jpg

Loganberry Books (one of Cleveland's best!) http://www.loganberrybooks.com/ and Strong Bindery

shaker0309_29.jpg

Kick@ss signage for a car repair shop!

shaker0309_30.jpg

More of the Larchmere commercial strip...

shaker0309_31.jpg

With residential on the side streets:

shaker0309_32.jpg

And nice infill on Larchmere itself:

shaker0309_33.jpg

shaker0309_34.jpg

Cool building, and it's for sale:

shaker0309_35.jpg

Enough of Larchmere, let's head to Shaker Lakes - these cluster homes are at Warwick and South Park Boulevard:

shaker0309_36.jpg

Part of the "park" in South Park Boulevard:

shaker0309_37.jpg

And the lovely homes along North Park Boulevard:

shaker0309_38.jpg

shaker0309_39.jpg

But not all are lovely...

shaker0309_40.jpg

But most are... and note, that's all ONE house in this pic:

shaker0309_41.jpg

Over to historic Fairmount Boulevard - this 9,000 sq. ft. home made news when it went up for auction - check the pics at: http://homes.point2.com/US/Ohio/Cuyahoga-County/Cleveland-Heights/Fairmount-Coventry/1972602-Real-Estate.aspx

Georgian grandeur on Fairmount

shaker0309_43.jpg

Probably Fairmount's best known, the Tremaine-Gallagher house:

shaker0309_44.jpg

Some smaller "shacks" on Fairmount ;-)

shaker0309_45.jpg

Also up for sale - I think they're asking $569K

shaker0309_46.jpg

But Fairmount doesn't have the monopoly on large homes - the next three are along South Park Boulevard:

shaker0309_47.jpg

shaker0309_48.jpg

shaker0309_49.jpg

A brief stop at the Shaker Lakes Nature Center - by the way, this and some of the above homes were at one point going to be obliterated for a highway. http://www.shakersquare.net/news/pd-sept25-shakerlakes.htm

shaker0309_52.jpg

shaker0309_53.jpg

shaker0309_54.jpg

shaker0309_55.jpg

But time to start wrapping things up - some lovely homes along Shaker Boulevard (yeah, public transit "ruins" neighborhoods  )

shaker0309_56.jpg

Shaker Towers http://www.shakertowers.com/ and Empire Plaza

shaker0309_57.jpg

Passing by Moreland Courts again, I see UrbanOhio forumer, MyTwoSense

shaker0309_58.jpg

shaker0309_59.jpg

shaker0309_60.jpg

St. Elizabeth's, one more time:

shaker0309_61.jpg

Downtown in the distance:

shaker0309_62.jpg

And back out to Public Square - hope you enjoyed!

shaker0309_63.jpg

A spectacular photo thread on a spectacular neighborhood!

Im surprised that this place hasn't been snapped up.  I bet they are having an issue with vine growth.  that 35k to remove right there.  My grand parents lived around the corner from this house and my aunt and uncle live a few houses down.

Nice pics of Fairmount and N. Park.  I've said it before and I'll say it again, the grandeur of Cleveland Heights cannot matched.  The few homes that MayDay shows here are on the small side.  East of North Woodland and they are gigantic, like the one above.

I'm surprised that MayDay didn't take  pictures and or move into of the home directly across the street from the one above.  The House is a virtual play ground. Pool, Tennis courts, putt-putt golf course, sunken gardens, the works.  I don't know who owns it now, but as a kid, I wanted to live there after going to a party there.  They are ballin' big time!  Those houses my our house look small.

I fixed that for you!  lol

Lastly, MayDay, quit with the peeping Tom thing.  I can see inside of my apartment in two of those pictures.  I've gotta remember to close the curtains when you're around!

Absolutely horrendous! Who would want to live in the crappy, characterless Moreland Courts?  :-P

All joking aside, what a wonderful tour! Too bad a certain person, *cough* MTS *cough,* who lives in the area couldn't get out more and photograph the nabe himself. Thanks MayDay!

HUSH!  Two sections of Shaker Heights Neighborhoods are apart of Shaker Square area.

I'm sure my friend Clvlndr means the pictures of Shaker Square are the best neighborhood in Cleveland.

Can those of us who live in SS have our moment?  MayDay doesn't often take pictures East of Downtown, so can we just have our 15 minutes?!  Sheesh!  damn haters!

Lovely photos, lovely place, lovely day!

Shaker Square is anything but. Good stuff, with Larchmere being my fave surprise with it's commercial street and the infill there.

Nice pics, MayDay.

This is a former electrical substation for the Woodland-Larchmere streetcar line. The substation was built near the end of the line and the eastern extent of the developed city up until the mid-1940s.

I started to rant but I'll post it at the "Ahh, the sprawl of it all" thread.

Thanks sugar.  The SS forumers appreciate those kind words.  I was under the impression that you went over on Larchmere when you came up.

Lovely photos, lovely place, lovely day!

See how the "sweet and innocent" do it?! Take a note ProkNo5 and CDM!

For those who need it!

I fixed that for you! lol

Thanks, MTS.  Probably MY shortest post, and still not error free.  Ugh!

Another well balanced shoot. One of Cleveland's true gems. I felt like I was along for the ride!

Aunt Ester MTS? You fish eyed fool!

Great collection! Shaker Square is quite pleasant.

Love those big homes.  The Gallagher one reminds me of something you might see in Newport, RI.
