Posted March 29, 200916 yr This is one neighborhood (5xNW according to the trendy area commission) I'm rather mixed about. It's healthy, but commercial streets are overall too car-oriented. Biking here is not comfortable, so I was only able to to go a block at a time since there's an incline no matter which east-west street you choose. Both 5th & King get a thumbs down from a cycling standpoint and don't fare much better for pedestrians who have several blocks to walk to reach the next light to cross the street. Commercial-wise you have sprawling strips with the most continuous walkable stretch on the west end of 5th. The NE section of the neighborhood is basically industrial. There are some popular dining and bar options like Rotolo's Pizza (artery clogging goodness) and Andyman's Treehouse (there is a big tree in the middle of the bar) along with some interesting residential streets. edit: Grandview Ave will have a thread of it's own. The northern half is in this neighborhood while the southern half is in the suburb of Grandview (Heights). It's a shared commercial strip. Think High St. in the Short North whose east and west sides belong to different neighborhoods. I was hungry so I tried out this place, which I was guessing served Thai food. Got a big plate of pad thai for under $7. Much of King on this side of the river is lined with places like these. Off to the best part of 5th. Eh, I think I'll stick to the west side. Ending the tour with some infill.
March 29, 200916 yr MY OLD NEIGHBORHOOD!! *CRIES* "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
March 29, 200916 yr Johnnie's Glenn Ave. Grill is one of the greatest throwbacks in the city of Columbus. A true neighborhood joint that, alas, no longer lives up the the "grill" part of its name. I've only been there a couple of times, but feel oddly secure just knowing it's still there.
March 30, 200916 yr ha ha my old neighborhood too, we lived on elmwood when we got married. interesting to see the metropolitan building in the last picture. thats new to me. looks great! and ditto re: johnnie's -- it's comforting to see old man bars like that are still around.
April 8, 200916 yr Checked out Johnnie's and it might be the most mixed bar in the city. Blue collar to college kids to lesbians. Gets a thumbs up from me.
