If I drink, or did drugs I guess you could call it the munchies.  I'm just up watching TV.

OK so any idea how/why that ugly apartment bldg burned down?  I hope there were no casualities.

Like I said, I would be surprised if it wasn't a grease fire.  Nearly all late-night kitchen fire are.  Someone is drunk, high, tired, etc., decides to make a late night snack, the oil catches fire and their instincts tell them to throw water on it... spreading the fire to the walls and floor.  It is amazing how many people don't know to NOT throw water on a grease fire.

Hi everyone, I have an udpate on the fire. This is not official but this is the scuttlebut among residents in neighboring buildings.  It was an elderly woman, on oxygen, who decided to smoke her fucking cigarette while her O2 was still on.  I just hate people. From a detailed look at the building last night, her tank must have blown up and caused the stove to blow, and it started a fire that immediately consumed the upstairs apartment.  A couple lived there who had 2 cats who both died in the fire. The couple both broke their backs jumping from the 3rd floor to safety on the ground.

All 12 units in the building are completely demolished, I mean, down to the ashes burned, nothing of any real nature left at all, no personal property of any kind. After some time at the middleburg heights rec center, they have been relocated to new units.

The people have nothing. NOTHING.  The Islander is accepting donations at the main office. They need everything. Literally - toothbrushes, toiletries, blankets, linens, small electrics (not microwaves, those are in-suite), clothing, furniture, non-perishable food, everything.  They have nothing. They of course are also accepting cash.

If you have it in your heart, your wallet, and/or your home to give, I hope you'll consider going by the main office and dropping something off for these families.  The main office is on Normandie in Middleburg Heights, the apt complex is right off 71 just south of the airport at the Pearl Rd exit.

No renters' insurance?  No umbrella policy provided by the complex?

Renters insurance is so reasonably cheap that I don't understand why people who rent choose to live without it... especially when the neglect of others can leave your lives in such shambles

I was just going to ask that?

Renters, please buy renters insurance.

As I understand it, about half of them had renter's insurance and half did not.  I don't know about the complex's insurance policy.  But they need things NOW, not whenever the red tape of insurance kicks in.  I just can't imagine.

I've had renter's insurance my entire adult life, ever since I was robbed in my first apt outside of college (in Lakewood).

I assume you mean you were burglarized?

I thought the term was 'burgle' as in "the Hamburglar will burgle your ham"

Needless to say, the people with renters probably won't get the full replacement value of everything they lost, when you think of what you collect over the course of a life, and what actually has 'value' to an insurance agency. I can see a need for a charitable fund to help out.

My question is what happened to the old lady who blew herself up? Did she survive?

sorry, yes, burgled.

the old lady is ok as I understand it.

I thought the term was 'burgle'

Sure, if you're British. :)

Anyway, it sounds like donations are needed.  Where are the people being housed in the meantime?

They were housed in the MH rec center but have now been moved to new units within the Islander complex.

I'm sure they got significant assistance from the Red Cross, but most of that is just to last for the first few days.

Needless to say, the people with renters probably won't get the full replacement value of everything they lost, when you think of what you collect over the course of a life, and what actually has 'value' to an insurance agency.

You get 'fair market value'... not 'replacement cost'.  That is the standard in Ohio for most personal property.  If your couch was 10 years old, you will get whatever you could have sold it on the street for.... not what it costs to buy a new couch.  The real shame comes in when you are talking about items with sentimental value, such as family photos or heirlooms, memorabilia, collectables, suvenirs, pets... you get the point.  There is simply no way to place a market value on those items.

That's what I keep thinking of. The pictures, the computer and everything stored on it, your personal mementos, etc.  Just devastating.

For the non-tech savvy, as far as the PC realm goes, a helpful mantra is "Data you don't have multiple copies of is data you don't care about."

Check out Google Docs they give you 1GB of online storage (any file type) free, and its easy to store (new) pictures online at sites like snapfish or shutterfly.

Which is why I do NOT carry renter's insurance.  You pay them the money, then when something happens and it's time for them to actually insure, they will f' you out of every dime possible.

FYI, for only a little bit more, you can usually buy a replacement value endorsement to your renters policy.  It doesn't help with things of purely sentimental value (nothing would), but it sure does help with a closet full of suits, an office full of electronics and an apartment full of nice furniture.

This is what I have, and it is well worth it. I've needed it twice (once for a burglary and once for a burst pipe); if I had only one incident, it would have already paid for itself.

Why wouldn't they?  They have renters insurance with "full replacement value" options.  And the way you state that, wouldn't the same be true for a home owner?

I totally disagree.

I didn't know about full replacement value renter's insurance, thank you guys for mentioning this, I will contact my insurance agent today.

Edited to add: Thanks for this again, I called them and we do have the replacement value type policy w/no depreciation of items.

Don't get all sassy with me, Ms. Thang.

I'm guessing it would be the same. Now that I think about it, I have to check my policy to see if it has the "full replacement value" clause.  Probably does, only because I'm a sucker, and the guy upsold me.

The other thing everyone should do is take photos of each of your rooms so you have photographic evidence of what you had. Helps immensely when/if you ever have to make a claim when you can point to the photo and say "there it is".

Oh, and don't keep the photos in the same place you live...you know, 'cause they'd burn up.

AJ93 - YOU ARE INSANE MAN!  I LOVE YOU!!

Couldn't agree more.  I have taken a picture and given a catalog number to every item in my houses.  Nothing comes in or goes out without being cataloged.  I then have placed a copy in the safe and also host one online (google docs is a great tool) so I can have access anywhere.

You'll never know exactly how much you have unless you catalog.  EVEN RENTERS.  Some people think it's a waste of time, but for me its peace of mind.

I'm surprised that the landlord doesn't require the tenants to have renters insurance.  My parents require the tenants to have their own insurance, and they have to submit a copy of the renewal every year.

OK, shall we bring this back on topic, folks?

hint: The answer is "yes".

^Newsworthy?

On a personal note, I received a ticket in the mail the other day from East Cleveland.  Apparently, in the beginning of November, one of their cameras on Euclid got me going 26mph in a 20mph zone.  I'm not going to fight it because I assume it was a school zone..... but $95.00, you've got to be kidding me.

Riot? Really?

Cut the bus lines off! This was surely the act of some of those Public Square Thugs!!

There were probably rumors of a sale on L'Air Du Temps at Nordstrom. You know how chicks can be about their perfume...

This is a truly tragic situation:

Cleveland Heights boy dies following altercation with family member

http://blog.cleveland.com/sunpress/2010/12/cleveland_heights_boy_dies_fol.html#incart_mce

Apparently, the boy died after his father put him in a headlock and he lost consciousness.

Now check out this whopper of a comment from Kozmo at cleveland.bomb, which I seriously hope is a joke:

These types of things wouldn't be in the news if parents were allowed to discipline their children - if the schools were allowed to discipline children - if neighbors were allowed to discipline children. I am 40 years old and remeber a time when I had respect for my elders because I knew I would get a whooping if I came up short. Children today know that they can get away with anything because the police and child protective services are only a phone call way. Thank the stupid liberals for all of this touchy-feely crap!

Yes, killing children is a great way of eliminating discipline problems.

Where did he reference killing?

Kozmo didn't say that child deaths wouldn't happen anymore. He said they wouldn't be in the news anymore. So the inference is that if child deaths happened more often as a result of disciplinary actions, they wouldn't be news.

I realize what he was trying to say. What actually said was different.

Bank Robbery at bank in Willoughby Hills

Women beat up and robbed in Walgreens parking lot during the day on route 91 in Willoughby by Willoughby Hills border

Riot at Beachwood Place Mall

Two kids abducted/held to gun point in Mentor Walmarts parking lot, then let go.

Trouble in paradise...

I saw the story about the Beachwood "Riot" on the local news when I was home.  They repeated the footage about 8 times during what semed to be a rather lengthy news slot devoted to reporting on it.  I guess they needed to burn it into people's brains that BP is now a war zone.

To me it looked like a scuffle between some kids at the mall, not a riot.  Unless there was more to it than what was in that footage, it was completely blown out of proportion.

The Beachwood Place incident was more than an isolated short fight.

Mall, Community Respond to Teen Fight in Beachwood

"...It started around 7:00 p.m. when the teens began running through the mall, allegedly yelling and harassing shoppers.

An Aurora man grabbed his cell phone and started recording when the tense situation then escalated into a series of fights in different parts of the complex..."

Look, people are obviously wary of Beachwood Place having the same kind of problems plaguing/plagued Tower City, Euclid, Richmond, Severance and Randall.  Hopefully the mall is instituting better security or common sense directives so this situation won't repeat itself.

Any "riot" that ends in one teen with minor injuries and another under arrest simply because he refused to leave the mall when asked is no "riot" in my book.  From the video, it appears to be a couple skate boarder types who had too much sugar.  I think it is being overblown because it was Beachwood.  I'm not sure which world people grew up in where teens don't fight at the mall.  I know I was involved in a few growing up.

In other news (sorry, don't have a link) there was a shooting at Ultra in Wickliffe and that place has been shut down.  Pretty sure it was on one of those teen nights.  Anyone know if this is the same place which used to be the Coz back in the day.

Imagine what the coverage would have been like if the participants looked like "thugs"... at least as that term is defined by the average PD reader.

Just wait till the richmond mall closes and all those kids will hangout at the beachwood mall. Some of those people will have a heart attack.

Do kids hang out at the "lifestyle centers"?  Or is there something about fountains and food courts?

Beachwood is a traditional mall.  Legacy Village is a "lifestyle center" and there are kids that hand out there because the apple store is there

the cos(mopolitan) is/was? at 91 and Euclid in Willoughby

It was an eastlake man who held the two teens to gun point and forced them to drive him to the east cleveland area I believe it was.

Yeah, yeah, I know what traditional malls and lifestyle centers are :).  I was just curious if the newer lifestyle centers have developed any of the youth culture and attendant problems, including teen fights, that have traditionally been associated with covered malls.

I dont think so.  At legacy, Apple is a teenage draw.  The kids have been out on dates at crappy KPC or CKF.  The only other place I can see kids hanging at is chipolte.  Other than those places I can't see kids hanging out at "lifestyle centers".
