My first thought, coming from KJP, is that there's some serious back story here.

Cleveland Heights man charged in The Katz Club Diner fire

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio -- A Cleveland Heights man was charged with arson Wednesday in connection to an early morning fire that damaged The Katz Club Diner.

James Warholak, 46, started the blaze at 4:17 a.m. Tuesday, a criminal complaint filed in Cleveland Heights Municipal Court said.

Gotta give CHPD credit for moving quickly again on another highly reported event.

Warholak?  Sounds Polish.  Dang diversity.

I really doubt CH has that much more crime than other comparable east side suburbs.

Or Lakewood.

Some restaurateurs have put their live savings into their dream and when it goes bad, as most restaurants do, they panic.

I doubt Doug Katz put his life savings into this diner with the other successful ventures he has going.  Also, I hear he used the kitchen of the diner for a lot of his successful catering business, so even if the diner business itself wasn't very profitable (it actually had a very good crowd though), he was getting good use out of the structure.

Dog the PeeDee comments all you want, but they often fill in major gaps.  It sounds like Katz had real time video monitoring going to his house, and that's how they caught the guy.  Sounds like he was an employee.

If I ever own a restaurant, I am only going to employ robots.

The video monitoring was reported in the original article, but yes, the comments are occasionally useful for providing additional detail in as story like this if one is patient enough to sort through the mountains of idiocy, race-baiting, and baseless speculation that are posted there.

Criminal investigations do look for patterns first and desperation by owners is one explanation police look for an arsons. If that can be crossed off, then they look for the next likely possibility like employee revenge, domestic issues, etc. None are surprising. If it gets to be a complicated case, then that's surprising to me.

Great, give the robots knives and frying pans to attack us with when they begin their uprising.

Ever since the CHPD played hardball with that Adam Ferrise clown on a story last year, the amateurs over at NEOMG have had CH crime under a microscope.

The CHPD used to play games with crime stats, but that hasn't been the case for at least 3-4 years. The situation hasn't gotten worse in CH, however the aforementioned media situation and a few high-profile leads people to believe it has. Worst of all, the comments section on Cleveland.com is the Wild West and the trolls eat this stuff up. CH is an easy target for many of them because of its reputation as a liberal stronghold.

I know it's satire, but this wasn't funny.

An awful, patronizing, pandering, unfunny article. Clevescene should pull it.

I thought it was funny.... at least I chuckled a few times.  As for it being patronizing, that is kind of the point, no?

Completely disagree.  As a resident of CH, this is a welcome article.  And judging by the amount of times my CH friends have shared it, most tend to agree with me.  I don't think it's a laugh out loud article, but I think it is a great call out on the coverage of PD and NEOMG.

I thought it was very funny. Very Onion-esque.

Lots of things going on there. They aren't going to increase the size of their departments, and they can't force white cops to quit because they are white.

No one is asking them. In fact, a big problem is the lack of minority candidates applying to police cadet school. That, I believe, is the biggest issue here -- one that the protesters are ignoring. It's fine to argue for a police force that is more representative of the community they oversee. But unless the protesters are demanding that more minorities apply, their anger is misdirected.

When people are shutting down downtown Cleveland intersections to protest NYC grand jury decisions, "misdirected" is an understatement.  But that's an extremely good point.  Not only are they not advocating more applications, many individually will condemn those who do apply as "race traitors" (a fundamentally racist concept itself).

Yes, there's no national pattern here of which Cleveland and NY are both demonstrably a part.

Race traitors?  Black police officers are some of the most respected members of the black community...... to the extent people continually insist on their being a 'black community'

Race traitors?  Black police officers are some of the most respected members of the black community...... to the extent people continually insist on their being a 'black community'

The further and further black Americans as individuals progress, the less such a "community" is relevant, except in strictly cultural terms.  When was the last time someone talked about the Irish vote?  I was a big deal, once....

But I daresay the people blocking streets and doing worse do see things that way.

dont do that, it'll spoil his conjecture

For some, it's all in the 'context' folks.....

^ What is going on there?

^I think it was termed 'civil disobedience'..... the Cliven Bundy standoff.  The Ferguson protesters should have taken a cue and brought horses, flags, and guns instead of signs.

Unfortunately I have a feeling where a lot of those kids came from.

One of the last times I saw a movie at Valley View, two groups of 4 or 5 teenagers (from Cleveland Heights, incidentally) stood up in the middle of the theater and started brawling because one of the kids had kicked another's seat.  They stopped the movie, and I had to give a statement to the cop that showed up.  I've never experienced that sort of thing at any other theater, but I still consider these incidents to be isolated, and I hope the theater doesn't get a reputation!

Really where?

I've avoided that theater for two years now. I don't care to have people make loud comments through an entire movie.

Strongsville I'd wager.

Me too, but I've never had problems at Valley View.  There are other theaters I avoid because of that, though.

While we're offering our anecdotal evidence,  I've been to Valley View a bunch of times without any issues whatsoever. It's the closest modern theater to Cleveland so it's my go-to.

Two separate groups of teenagers from CH were at the same movie at Valley View?  I've never been. What makes that theatre so special?

^Probably only that th there teens there are from a much larger pool of High Schools than the theater at Severance. All the lobby frills and seating have been removed. It is also larger than Severance's theater.

They were the first to have digital projectors, and carry all the 3D movies etc. Regal Cinemas had been turning itself into a complete dumpster fire for years.

There's not that many theaters left in that area.  Cinemark Macedonia is a lot smaller.  It was probably indeed people from my former part of the world:  Garfield, Bedford, and of course Maple.  But as is mentioned above, the combatants could just as easily have been from the same place.  As it stands, the "face" of that incident is that brief video that reinforces just about every relevant stereotype.

I've been saying for awhile that theaters are a dated business model being propped up by the clout of chains and I expect bigger hits to start going to streaming/purchase simultaneously with theater release soon.  Relevant to this, I expect the trend to start with kiddie movies or movies that might expect disturbances.

For all of the adults who like a peaceful, great movie going experience in a historic structure, Capitol never has this nonsense.  There are never loiterers, groups, trouble, etc. I use to see 1 movie per year but now I see every movie that comes through Capitol because I love the experience so much.

Maybe, but there is also Richmond, East Gate, and probably some more that are a lot closer than Valley View.  Certainly it is possible that two different set of teens from CH were sitting in the same theatre, in consecutive rows...... just not very likely.

In 2015 with social media, it is very likely....
