This happened very close to me last night. Family came to my home for Thanksgiving. We heard lots of sirens and my family left soon thereafter and saw all the emergency vehicles down at Detroit Avenue. But I didn't know why until I saw this. Unfortunately the owner of the building where this happened doesn't screen his tenants very well and I once saw a drug deal occur on Ridgewood in broad daylight there. I hope Peppers restaurant next to this site won't have it's business hurt by this...

official statement in an attempt at damage control by HOLA (Hispanic Organization of Lake and Ashtabula) Not an issue of immigration, but of mental illness!--

"HOLA Ohio, a grassroots Latino organization based in Painesville, has released the following statement:

The Latino community is distraught and deeply saddened by the violent acts committed by Juan Razo. Our hearts are broken and we are praying for the victims. Juan Razo’s family has grappled with his serious mental health issues for many years. His acts do not represent our community. We want to thank law enforcement for their excellent work of removing this threat so quickly. In addition, Juan Razo was not a random illegal alien. His father is a U.S. citizen who has worked in the fields for 40 years. He filed documents for his children over a decade ago and Juan Razo was a beneficiary with an approved petition who has been “standing in line” for his green card for over 12 years. Thus, this is not an issue about immigration, rather it is about the problems associated with adults with mental illness. We are disappointed to see leaders exploiting this tragedy to promote a political agenda."

PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- An undocumented Mexican immigrant accused in a string of crimes last summer that shook a small Lake County community has been indicted.

Juan Razo, 36, faces 16 charges in connection with a violent crime spree on July 27, according to an indictment handed down Thursday by a grand jury in the Lake County Court of Common Pleas.

Razo faces three counts of kidnapping; two counts each of aggravated murder, aggravated robbery, attempted murder, aggravated burglary, attempted rape and felonious assault; and one count of rape.

A few more incidents in Lakewood.  Good lord things have certainly changed since I lived there.

Lakewood police investigating separate robberies reported within hours of one another

LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- Lakewood police are investigating two robberies that were reported within hours of one another.

The first incident happened about 1:45 a.m. when three men approached a man and his friend near a Detroit Avenue Harry Buffalo. One of the robbers used a replica handgun during the robbery, according to a police report.

The second was reported reported about 4:20 a.m. A CVS Pharmacy clerk said a man jumped over the front counter and took cash from the register, another report said.

Lakewood is safe. Yeah, it has its issues, but by and large its a very safe place to raise a family imho.

Very true. And that's one of the primary reasons I bought a house there, when I could've gotten a much larger one just over the border in Cleveland.

Thats good to hear.  I started to wonder as Lakewood used to have that "tough law enforcement" reputation, but didnt know if that was still the case since Lakewood now sees crimes that similar inner ring suburbs see, but used to be unheard of there.  I guess thats to be expected.

I've never felt unsafe walking around in western and central Lakewood, even late at night. That being said, and maybe my perception is wrong, but the eastern part of the city seems (fair or unfair) a bit more sketchy.

The western and central areas of Lakewood are the safest, but I've lived at the east end of Lakewood for 19 years and it's not unsafe. There have been bad years of crime spurts but only in one year (2005) was it very bad. As in any densely developed neighborhood, all it takes is one bad neighbor (who usually doesn't stick around long) or a bad apartment owner (who unfortunately sticks around longer). But the only way to put out the brush fires is to stay vigilant, stay involved and act fast. I call the police the moment I see or hear problems so that it creates a record for the city. Repeated complaints targeted at the same address get noticed and the city will address nuisance neighbors or nuisance apartment owners. I've also gotten to know my council persons and each mayor and gotten them to know me, hopefully in mutual respect. I parse my complaints among my praises to them so that when I complain, they will hopefully be heard. I'm emotionally and financially invested in Lakewood and I will defend it.

That's how Bedford is.  Stupid stuff happens there to be sure, but BPD don't play.

I notice a LOT more of that kind of citizen involvement in Lakewood than other places I've lived, and I think it makes all the difference.  I can't think of anyplace in the area I'd rather live, at least not on our budget and not without giving up the walkability, access to transit, and relatively central location within the larger region.  Now, enough of a sustained spike in crime could force me to reconsider.  But, precisely because I believe many Lakewood residents do have the sense of pride and commitment to their community to not tolerate that sort of thing, I don't expect that to happen anytime soon.

Seems like there is a bit of misleading reporting in that article in order to add that extra click-bait.  Did the fight really "spill over" into Whole Foods or is it just that some aftermath occurred in the parking lot of Whole Foods?

That would not really be a "spillover," IMO. Whole Foods is something like two or three blocks from Wiley.

Wouldn't really qualify as click bait in any case because it wasn't in the headline.

Sounds more like an after effect that could have happened hours later.

LAKEWOOD, Ohio — Two men are accused of hitting a friend with a baseball bat and threatening him with guns after all three used psychedelic mushrooms.

Funny stuff.  Homeboy probably called CPD thinking he'd be 30-40 minutes down the road before they showed.  Instead it was passed to Lakewood, who probably showed up in 30-40 seconds, and got himself arrested in the process! :)

This part of the article is curious to me:

"...Violand struck the North Olmsted man in the chest with a baseball bat, police said. The victim left the apartment and called Cleveland police, thinking the apartment was in Cleveland.

Cleveland police contacted Lakewood police, who arrived a short time later and arrested Violand and Rivera...."

These days, don't people just call 911 and are automatically handled by the right PD? it says he CALLED CPD----does that mean he knew the number directly and called it, thus not using 911? If so, is such a practice still common?

Ex-East Cleveland cop sentenced for faking evidence, ripping off drug dealers

This excerpt from the article kinda scares me: "Malone was set to be sentenced Monday until the U.S. Marshals found that he had outstanding warrants from Maricopa County, Arizona.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys both said they were surprised by the information and were unsure of what the warrants were for."

He worked as a cop for E CLE, arrested and charged and STILL no one knew?!

Most certainly.  But also things like Westlake still being able to have 4th of July Fireworks displays where the more diverse communities have pretty much all had to cancel them due to "bad behavior".  I have gone to Westlake's the past couple of year's and must say it is likely the most polite large gathering of people I have ever experienced.

Of all people, Triv was on the radio ranting about the people making such a big fuss over a high school fight. I wonder if he knew details about the combatants before giving his opinion.

One of my Facebook friends was wondering WTF these kids were thinking videoing the fight rather than trying to stop it.  She didn't know the details either.  I pointed out that their videos provided documentary evidence to support the criminal charges, and indeed they might risk some retaliation in that regard.

Apparently the perpetrator was already facing some rather serious criminal charges for a different incident.  Of course, were he not 18 his identity would still be sealed.

Your Facebook friends seem to have a consistent theme for conversations, at least those you report on here.

Seems like the injury alone would've warranted the felony charges, regardless of whether the fight could be classified as mutual combat or an unprovoked attack.

I looked in the Cleveland thread and didn't see any mention of the fact that Chris Heben's brother recently committed a similar assault on a bouncer in west park, which required multiple surgeries. Not surprising I suppose

Four charged in Lakewood drive-by shooting that left man in critical condition

By Evan MacDonald, cleveland.com

LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- Four men are charged with attempted murder in a drive-by shooting that left a Maple Heights man in critical condition.

The 27-year-old victim suffered a gunshot wound to the forehead Friday outside a gas station on West 117th Street at Franklin Boulevard in Lakewood.

The victim remains in critical condition at MetroHealth, police said Monday.

Wow, that's right by me.

Sounds like it started on Franklin and came to a horrible end at the gas station down the street from me. I don't remember the sirens -- but there's always sirens. I'm thankful for Lakewood's police who, unlike Cleveland's, hustle, care and have pride for their work and community.
